What splurge item have you bought that’s left you disappointed?

So decided to treat myself and buy myself a Venus embrace razor. I loved how glamorous it looked, loved that you can buy new heads for it and reuse the handle (less plastic waste). Just really wanted to love this item!

Anyway so I have a shower this morning with my Venus embrace…. I shave my legs, great result. Shave my toes, great result. Shave armpits, again great... And just when I’m really beginning to feel like a silky smooth Goddess in the shower… I try to shave my bikini area. OMG seriously wtf is wrong with this razor??? Something about the shape of the razor itself just makes it impossible to get a good result in the bikini area😳. I’m so disappointed.
I’m hoping the Venus razor inventor reads this thread and improves their product. Because I so wanted to love this item.

You would think spending more money on an item would get you a better product. But apparently not… So what luxury splurge item have you bought that’s left you disappointed??

I love my Dyson cordless but you need to make sure you have the correct brush bar. There are separate ones for carpets and hard floors and if used the wrong way round they are really ineffective. I got a replacement non branded battery from Amazon and it’s much better than the original.

You really need to keep the filters clean too and I’ve bought a second set so they can be rinsed and dried out without disruption.

I really was disappointed with my steam floor cleaner. The cord was such a faff.

Linen bedding is what you are after. Bloody amazing.

But presumably they are hell to iron? I can barely iron my linen shirt.

glovepillow22 · 03/11/2022 18:56

I'm with you OP I only buy a Venus razor if I'm feeling flush otherwise its the cheapos and hair conditioner as a shaving gel 🤣

My wasted item is definately my dyson airwrap. I'm either crap at using it or it's crap for my hair type 🙈

And those who choose to shave their toes are accused of being hobbits and werewolves. Insulting much ?

in answer to the question, the biggest disappointment was a neom diffuser. Seems weird and their oils are smell awful.

*smells weird

workiskillingme · 03/11/2022 19:04

A Lumie alarm clock
Didn't work one bit

Hepwo · 03/11/2022 19:06

I looked up the Airwrap.

They are 500 pounds.

Shocked!

I bought a cheap one for 35 quid years ago and never used that as it's too much of a faff.

Hallionflossie · 03/11/2022 19:14

Velvetiser - chocolate is lukewarm not hot, better off using a milk frother (£10) and a saucepan.
Silk pillowcase - looks lovely but doesn’t do anything for frizzy hair or skin and is warm, just use cotton ones now.

I love this thread, very cathartic!
300 thread Egyptian cotton bedding! I have lusted after it for years and looked at them longingly in John Lewis and posh bedding departments. Finally bought a set with duvet cover, sheet and pillow cases and I hate them. They are cold, slippery and noisy when moving around at night. I could have bought several poly cotton sets for the price of the duvet cover

Bamboo bedding is the one

recklessgran · 03/11/2022 19:20

Neom - especially all the stinking lavender shit. I don't understand the love for it at all. Stinks the house out. I stupidly bought a beautiful looking large gift set at a bargain price thinking it would be a good Christmas present for my lovely cleaner. It's stored in the ottoman bed and every time I lift the mattress it wreaks. I hate it so much and am struggling with the idea of giving it to her!

Hepwo · 03/11/2022 19:23

I love cold slippery sheets.

FlimFlam2 · 03/11/2022 19:31

Distraught over the anti-Henry comments earlier in the thread. I have used our Henry to hoover rubble and to retrieve objects that have fallen into crevasses un-traversable by the human hand. He inhales anything within a half meter radius.

Maybe the quality control is really bad and you end up with either a champion or a milksop?

BedTaker · 03/11/2022 19:33

Steam mop/steamer thing - thought it would be life changing, but actually having to plug and unplug the cord all the time, and having to fill it with distilled water (we live in a very hard water area) just pissed me off.

Awoooga · 03/11/2022 19:40

Travel system for our baby, the Mamas & Papas Ocarro (9 or 10 piece set I think) with Cybex car seat. Got it heavily discounted but still cost an absolute bomb. I’m fairly small & weak, this shit is so heavy I can barely lift the pram or car seat into my car 😂
I have no choice but to sling the baby if without fiancé. I love the way it looks and handles, but wish wish wish I’d have done more research and gotten a lighter system.

Anotherselfemployedcleaner · 03/11/2022 19:42

La Prarie and Creme de la Mer - wtf was I thinking?

🙄 why do woman body shame other woman?

Quite. And so another generation of women feels the need to remove their body hair so that they're 'acceptable' not just to the male gaze, but to other women as well.

People iron their bedding??

Just remembered another one; Elemis pro-collagen marine cream. I really wanted to love it but my face was an oil slick and I had constant breakouts. So disappointing.

I remove mine because it bloody stings when an inch and a half long hair on the back of my thigh keeps getting caught in my trousers...maybe you don't have as much as for it to be uncomfortable, but I certainly do.

Lorrymum · 03/11/2022 20:05

I haven't bought any but I loved the look and colours of Le Creuset saucepans. But they are so heavy I couldn't move even the smaller ones with two hands. Glad I didn't have a splurge!

@xogossipgirlxo

I'm not really a fitness person, it's got an activity app that shows you how active you've been that day and it could be motivating cuz if you do well that day all three circles of the display thing close, but I don't really need that, I used it to pay in shops as it was quicker than getting my phone but if it doesn't work for some reason it's kind of awkward.

Someone mentioned the alert to find your phone but my phone is usually silent, it also tracks your sleep if you like but then you always need to charge it so you have to take it off for few hours, it's just not for me but I can see how it can suit others, you can also text, answer calls etc but phone is just more convenient

Your phone pings even if silent!

Nothing. I'm tighter than a ducks arse.

AbsoluteTruths · 03/11/2022 21:09

Robot vax, not sure if I programmed it right but it refuses to go to the edges, needs emptying immediately and is generally hopeless at picking up. That went in the cupboard until enough time has passed and I can skip it.

Another poster mentioned Olverum, I too bought the body oil for my last holiday. Stinks and is nothing like the bath oil. Furious. Having said that, two bouts of covid have changed my sense of smell. Wasted £100 on a new bottle of Hermes Eau des Marveilles. After years of love, it smells like Pledge to me now.

Orangello · 03/11/2022 21:35

Linen bedding is what you are after. Bloody amazing.

i thought so too. Bought a fancy expensive set, tried, washed just in case it helps, threw away. Hell to iron sure, but rough and scratchy like hell!
Love my 1000TC cotton though.
