What splurge item have you bought that’s left you disappointed?

So decided to treat myself and buy myself a Venus embrace razor. I loved how glamorous it looked, loved that you can buy new heads for it and reuse the handle (less plastic waste). Just really wanted to love this item!

Anyway so I have a shower this morning with my Venus embrace…. I shave my legs, great result. Shave my toes, great result. Shave armpits, again great... And just when I’m really beginning to feel like a silky smooth Goddess in the shower… I try to shave my bikini area. OMG seriously wtf is wrong with this razor??? Something about the shape of the razor itself just makes it impossible to get a good result in the bikini area😳. I’m so disappointed.
I’m hoping the Venus razor inventor reads this thread and improves their product. Because I so wanted to love this item.

You would think spending more money on an item would get you a better product. But apparently not… So what luxury splurge item have you bought that’s left you disappointed??

Err…hasn’t everyone got hairy toes? Doesn’t everyone give them a swipe with the razor? I do. They’re not very hairy or anything but hair grows there. Who are these people with hairless toes?

I don't have hairy toes. My sister has hairy toes. She leaves them as they are. I think they look cute, actually.

Not RTFT but any coffee machines mentioned? I long for one but am very sensibly waiting until we get the kitchen done before splashing out. I know I'm going to be disappointed...

Ground or capsule? I love our Lavazza capsule which has lasted much better than the two Nespressos we had before.

Versace handbag. One year in and its falling apart.

Roselilly36 · 03/11/2022 17:54

Shark cordless anti hair wrap is awesome, had it a few years now, it’s never let me down. I have tried dyson, air ram and the shark is the best performance by far.

nespresso is rarely used.

kenwood chef is probably the best purchase, years old, DH uses that a lot for dough mainly.

OnABreeze · 03/11/2022 17:55

Yep! Dyson. I've had two so far and they've both been absolute shite after a few months.

I now stick to Henry Hoover - no thrills just does the job he needs to do!

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 03/11/2022 17:56

I love our Dyson cordless - had it years and use it daily. I’d replace it instantly if it died.

I also like my Apple Watch. At one point I was getting overwhelmed by all the notifications, so turned off WhatsApp and Slack and instantly felt much better.

The phone-pinging function is so useful - and it works even if your phone is on silent (which mine always is).

I use it to pay on the tube or bus. It counts my lengths in the pool. The timers are great for cooking. I’d definitely replace it if stopped working. The only thing I don’t like is the pathetic battery life. On a busy day it’s on its last legs by bedtime.

notangelinajolie · 03/11/2022 17:58

Add me to the cordless Dyson list. The worst vacuum I have ever owned, what a total waste of a lot of money.

@NeverDropYourMooncup GrinGrinGrin
I would love to own a cat. DH hates cats and says if I get a cat, he goes (it's tempting sometimes). I know that if I ever do get a cat, said cat will be the most cantankerous ever of its species. I loved reading about yours though. Give him/her an extra cuddle from me.

DWMoosmum · 03/11/2022 18:03

One of those vibrators that sucks........! It was crap! Silent but rubbish 🤣

caroleanboneparte · 03/11/2022 18:10

I buy mens razors. They are cheaper and better. Also I read a long well researched article that made a good case for using disposables over the reusable/ buy new blades ones. The disposables won hands down cost wise and environmentally.

My thing is my stain hairdryer. It is good. It is so much better than any other dryer. It makes me not dread drying my hair. It makes my hair smoother. But is this worth overview £300 more than any other dryer?

I can't believe I spent that much on a hairdryer!!

Aww no, this is disappointing...

I bought one of those womaniser suction air pulsating vibrators. Was very expensive and literally did nothing for me… And what exactly am I supposed to do with it now??

it’s not like I can sell it on eBay 🤣

@Chloefairydust oooh I don't know, there's loads of people that would buy that stuff 🤣. Maybe this is a good business idea 🤣

Instapot. More like programming than cooking.

LanternGhost · 03/11/2022 18:22

Endless hair products that promise I will have bouncy voluminous curls if I just follow 15 precise steps. The result is always flat and messy hair.

pictish · 03/11/2022 18:26

I haven’t made very many poor splurge purchases. I’m obsessive and will gaily research anything pricey to the nth degree so I’m rarely disappointed.

Bad buys I can think of:

The Shark vacuum. Was meant to be handy but despite being pet friendly, clogs up and spits crap back out everywhere. Pathetic. Had to get Henry back out of retirement. He’s a cumbersome git but he sucks like Billy-o and doesn’t complain.

The steam cleaner. Absolute bollocks. It’s no substitute for hot soapy water, a cloth and elbow grease. Threw it out in the end.

Dualit toaster. Don’t get me wrong, loved it. Good fucking toaster. Bloody cat peed on it and killed it. No idea why he did this, he doesn’t pee in the house at all but he peed on the Dualit. Hadn’t had it for a year. Still have it. Might get it fixed one day.

Goatinthegarden · 03/11/2022 18:28

I’m amazed at all the hate for the Apple Watch. I’m obsessed with mine, but I am a fitness freak. I got the first one when they came out and then updated to the newest model (at the time) about two years ago.

Mine will happily record an 8 hour hike or cycle and still hold its charge all day, I charge it for an hour before bed or whilst I’m showering/eating breakfast in the morning. My phone is always on silent but I can still ‘ping’ it to find it. I can go out for a run with Bluetooth earphones and no phone and still use the watch for music or to pay for something if I stop for a coffee. It can also share my location with DH, so if I were to crash my bike, he can come and find me. I can read texts from friends surreptitiously in the middle of work.

I also just like being cheered on by it, getting little awards and reading all my data that it collects (complete loser).

I also love my cordless Dyson and my ancient KitchenAid.

Every time I buy glasses, for some reason, I always seem to buy two really expensive pairs and then just wear the same pair. I never learn.

I love this thread, very cathartic!
300 thread Egyptian cotton bedding! I have lusted after it for years and looked at them longingly in John Lewis and posh bedding departments. Finally bought a set with duvet cover, sheet and pillow cases and I hate them. They are cold, slippery and noisy when moving around at night. I could have bought several poly cotton sets for the price of the duvet cover

Oh really? I have been looking at nicer bedding longingly too. Hotel style bedding.

FFS - it was a light hearted comment (sorry if I offended you OP).

I'm not the hair police.

And do not call me Karen.

Gruffling · 03/11/2022 18:35

DH bought a fancy version of Alexa. I was furious - we had a perfectly good Alexa already and the new one looks ugly and takes up much needed counter space in our kitchen as it is so fat!

Worst thing is that it was so expensive because of the speaker quality/ base and I have sensory issues and hate loud base.

Linen bedding is what you are after. Bloody amazing.

Really? As long as women buy into the beauty ideal that they must be hairless, by shaving every bit of visible hair apart from head, brows and lashes, it's not rocket science to work out that women who DON'T do it will frequently attract insulting comments, like the one upthread.

And those who choose to shave their toes are accused of being hobbits and werewolves. Insulting much ?

in answer to the question, the biggest disappointment was a neom diffuser. Seems weird and their oils are smell awful.
