What splurge item have you bought that’s left you disappointed?

So decided to treat myself and buy myself a Venus embrace razor. I loved how glamorous it looked, loved that you can buy new heads for it and reuse the handle (less plastic waste). Just really wanted to love this item!

Anyway so I have a shower this morning with my Venus embrace…. I shave my legs, great result. Shave my toes, great result. Shave armpits, again great... And just when I’m really beginning to feel like a silky smooth Goddess in the shower… I try to shave my bikini area. OMG seriously wtf is wrong with this razor??? Something about the shape of the razor itself just makes it impossible to get a good result in the bikini area😳. I’m so disappointed.
I’m hoping the Venus razor inventor reads this thread and improves their product. Because I so wanted to love this item.

You would think spending more money on an item would get you a better product. But apparently not… So what luxury splurge item have you bought that’s left you disappointed??

Also I shave my big toe. I only had minimal hair on it but I didn't want it there. My choice!
Not sure why women still get shamed for having hair.

Really? As long as women buy into the beauty ideal that they must be hairless, by shaving every bit of visible hair apart from head, brows and lashes, it's not rocket science to work out that women who DON'T do it will frequently attract insulting comments, like the one upthread.

You can’t shave your legs and then stop at your toes, it’s an incomplete job… Your toes are connected to your legs so would look weird to have smooth legs and hairy toes 😆

Your toes are connected to your legs? Did you have a horrible accident???

You shave to your ankle, your FOOT is attached to your leg and your toes are attached to your foot, I have never met anyone that shaves their foot.

I know some people can have hairy toes if their are heirtuse but a hairy foot? are you a warewolf.

I got a bargain deal on a silk Hayley Menzies dress I purchased on Vestiaire Collective. Originally £500ish, and would never pay that much for a dress I'd only wear once or twice a year it arrived and was really thin, not lined or properly hemmed (the hem on the skirt and sleeves was just a raw surger sewed finish). I didn't love it nearly as much as I wanted to, so I sold it on Vinted for a little more than I paid. I also purchased another small independent Designer dress on eBay for a fraction of the original £600 price that I'd seen it being sold for in Harrods a year or so before. It was beautiful in person and I loved it, but the top for very oddly. It was also 100% Polyester which I was surprised at. Because it didn't fit well on top I sold it on Vinted as well. I've since seen photos of it on celebrities and it didn't fit them on the top very well either

I didn’t hate my Apple Watch but it refused to update so basically useless. Got a Fitbit instead, much cheaper and all I need.

Dyson Airwrap; it’s not actually meant to curl hair, it’s to give it a ‘big blow-dry’ look, but it took way too long to do my very thick hair and your hair has to be the EXACT right amount of damp. I now have a pixie so just use the hairdryer attachment, which is good to be fair.

Faux Cils mascara by YSL; smells gorgeous but flakes so badly. I thought I’d perhaps just got a duff batch with my first tube so bought another from a different shop. No, same again.

@SecretVictoria I swear by the waterproof version! Absolutely hands down best mascara in decades. Followed by Too Faced better than sex mascara!

I’m converted to classic lashes from a lash tech now though (have been using Falscara products whilst she’s on maternity leave!)

Really I always thought dyson was the best kind of hoover 😮 … glad I never bought one now

We were warned, we went with a shark cordless instead - way better IMO

Every product that claims to tame my frizzy hair. They are either totally ineffective or act like an oil slick.

This was me, then I switched to co-washing and a drop of jojoba oil to leave in - no crappy silicones, no shampoo and no products. Life-hair-changing, seriously!

I think my partner uses Harry’s … Do you think he would notice if I used his razor???🤔😁

Yes.

Hmmm….see, now I want to try again 😂. Agree about Too Faced, we all used it in the pandemic as our mascara used to run when we had to wear masks in cold weather.

My eyes are too sensitive for falsies unfortunately, had bad eczema about 10 years ago and it still flares up now and then so I couldn’t risk the glue.

Omg the phone ping option has been a LIFESAVER for me (ADHD). That alone made it worth it 😂

This! Also ADHD and find the phone ping invaluable. 😆

Although I will say that otherwise it’s a frivolity. I bought it for running…I can take calls, change music, record my run on Strava with it. Mine is a series 3, one of the older ones, think I paid 180 for it. Pretty expensive. It was a birthday gift voucher splurge…I put half in myself. Wouldn’t have bought it outright with my own money.
Same with the airpods - got vouchers and put them towards cutting the cost significantly. I love those! Would buy again.

@Chickenwing2 try using Loreal Professional Tecni.Art Pli Shaper and pinning your curls with it. I find it will never give me curls like a curling iron but will give me bouncy curls more than a curly blow dry and they last

majorcamaiden · 03/11/2022 17:31

For those of you who like Harry's Razors, but perhaps looking for a more feminine version I highly recommend Friction Free Shaving (FFS) https://www.ffs.co.uk/pages/signup-razor-starter-kit

Not an item but so much money wasted on joining different slimming clubs.
I join, I eat sensibly , I loose weight , I leave , life happens and the weight creeps back on quietly. 😫
I am at the point at the moment to either go back on a diet or buy bigger sized knickers.

Download the Second Nature app. Honestly, it's one of the best things I've ever done. Been using it for 3.5 years now & have never looked or felt better.

I've just brought my first Dyson cordless in September, I love it,

Dyson cordless. Absolute rubbish.

I agree with this

Wexone · 03/11/2022 17:35

@majorcamaiden would recommend following Andrea Cheong on Instagram. She goes through clothing from Zara to high end designer and what to look out for material wise etc that is good quality and worth the price. What details to look out for. She goes into shops and films them. Also on titok

Madbadandusuallysad · 03/11/2022 17:37

The bastard Shark anti hair wrap cordless bollocks vacuum.

The Simba hybrid luxe mattress, dipped after a few months and you boil to death on it.

Moveoverdarlin · 03/11/2022 17:38

I love my cordless Dyson, literally have used it everyday for the last six years. Had to replace the filter for about £12, but other than that it’s a proper workhorse.

Things not worth the hype:

A Sleepyhead (bought by exhausted new mums willing to try anything)
A NEOM well-being pod
Jo Malone Candles
Charlotte Tilbury make-up
Dyson Airwrap
pandora jewellery
apple watch
Peloton

Dior lipstick that allegedly stays on all day, it does....but my month looked like an 80 year old rectum

I saved up for a pair of trousers I kept seeing on insta. They arrived and are hideous. I think not being 5ft 10 had something to do with it! Fortunately they can go back and I'll be no worse off.

Was it the 'butt scrunch' ones 😂

TenoringBehind · 03/11/2022 17:43

I prefer my old Fitbit to my Apple Watch. The problem with the Apple Watch is that a charge only lasts about 24 hours but I want to use it as my alarm clock so I have to remember to take it off in the evening to charge before bedtime, but invariably forget.

I miss being part of the MN Fitbit challenge group. With my Apple wat h I think I can only do challenges with friends with an Apple Watch which is just dh, and that’s quite boring.

plus I find the buzzing when I get phonecalls, texts, WhatsApp messages etc quite intrusive and distracting.

What's that?! I only really use my Apple watch as a watch, occasionally use it to pretend I'm a spy answer my phone if I'm not near it.

You can make your phone ping to find it. I am forever losing my phone and it ends up in the lost ridiculous places.

Of course you can buy a tile for it (I assume you can attach it somehow, I don't have one) but I also like the ability to glance at a message without having my phone on me and I can also answer it if it rings.

I always remove hair from toes and fingers.
One you've noticed it, you can't un-notice it.
I'm surprised other people don't do it.

A few years ago my friend mentioned her hairy toes I was WTF? Shock really? Horrified!

Was in the bath later looked at my toes. Yup. Hairy.

Ours has massively improved our life - wouldn't be without it. If there's something better out there I shall positively swoon.

Dellaandthedealer · 03/11/2022 17:47

My Dyson battery died too recently. Bought a compatible one from Ebay for about £20. So far so good…..
