So what are your energy bills this month?

Gas - £101.61 for using 82 units. Haven’t even put the heating on yet, we do however have a gas hob and I’m assuming hot water?? Have cut down on the DCs baths (twice a week now). But that’s up £40 from last month with a similar usage.

electricity £149.39 this month, up from £88.61 last month but we did use 150kw of energy more (I’m assuming from the heated clothes horse I used in an effort to prevent condensation, won’t be using that again!

we are with octopus on a flexible Tarif.

ouch 😩

I’m with octopus energy and my last bill was £110 excluding the £66 from the government. 2 bed semi and 3 living here. I’m amazed at some who are around the £60 mark for a four bed detached with teens. I honestly think you must live in the dark.

we have oil fired heating. I’ve not had to put oil in my tank yet. Still waiting to see how the government are going to pay the £100 we are due for being off grid.

We have gas hot water including showers, gas stovetop. So electric is mostly the fridge/freezer, LED lights don't use much. Two washing loads a week, vacuum once a week, oven mostly for jacket potatoes. Under £40 a month. We only pay 25p standing charge as we are on a fix, but unit rates the same as the cap. Gas was under £20 without heating.

Needarest22 · 05/12/2022 02:20

£285 😬. Single parent family. I have storage heaters and an electric car and radon fan. Small well insulated house. Unsustainable.

Crosswithlifeatm · 05/12/2022 06:49

Dual fuel was £78 but it was mild, this months reading in 3 days will be higher as I've used more gas for heating and it's going to be icey from Tuesday.
I've not used the oven as much and have a warm throw which is brilliant and has meant when I'm at home I can turn the thermostat down.

November was £324 and tracking for about £500 in December. WFH 3 days a week (with the heating off!) but even today, with nobody at home and the heating on 17 for an hour in the morning and from 3pm until now, we are at £13 for both gas and electric. It obviously goes up at the weekend too.

So frightening.

Wherediditallgo · 06/12/2022 22:10

How is it so much? My DH works from home and we’re paying £120 a month for electricity. He has an oil filled heater for his study and the heating (oil) goes on in the evening for a short time. We’ve not filled up the tank since the spring and still have just under half left (1250l tank)
4bed home and log burner gets lit after dinner.

Currently paying about £8- £10 per day , according to our smart meter.

This is a family of four in a 4 bedroom modern detached house. Weekends the usage is generally around £10 due to us being home most of the day.

Is £9-£10 per day really high?

Ours is similar, it’s awful

Newpuppymummy · 07/12/2022 08:31

We are paying £ 7 to £8 a day depending on washing machine///how much I have the heating on. Ours has gone up from from £75 a month to £225 a month in just a year.

Spudina · 07/12/2022 08:37

Gas is £500 a month by direct debit. I don’t have a gas meter so am waiting on a bill to find out how much I have actually used. Last electricity bill was £84.

Decafflatteplease · 07/12/2022 08:51

Can anyone explain to me about being in credit?

We currently pay £300 a month on a fix rate. Out bills at the moment all in are around £240 but that was last month when we barely had the heating on. Expecting more this month.

So when our bill gets to more than £300 (probably this month) we will start to use some of our credit yes?

Now here's the problem. In Jan when our fix ends they say they are putting out DD up from £300 to £500 as per unit it will cost more. But if we work hard to not use as much and our bills are less than £500 can we reduce the DD or does it just go on to our credit.

I'm really worried
I went through all our statements and looked at the amount of gas we used over the last year or so . Our electric use is fairly stable all year round. So in December 2021 we used 3000kwh of gas. Which cost around £100 I think. In Jan 2023 when our fix has ended if we use that same amount it will cost £450! So they are probably right I'm saying we need to pay £500 a.month. but then come summer 2023 our bills aren't going to be £500 a month surely so we will amass loads of credit ? Or have I completely misunderstood?

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 07/12/2022 09:38

Pay £260 pcm which is overpaying so we have a bit of a buffer.

November was the first month we used the gas - ended up costing £227, £76 on gas and £151 on electricity. That’s 890 and 504 kWh respectively. We’re fixed until Dec 2023. We have had the heating on for 2.5 or 3 hours a day.

I don't know who you are with but my supplier (Octopus) lets you change your direct debit up and down so if you have a large credit balance you can reduce the DD to let the credit reduce. Alternatively you can request large credit balances to be returned to your account.

£500 is a lot for a monthly direct debit so I'd look at how much gas you are using and whether you can reduce your consumption

That's for both gas and electric. We are high users, large old draughty house, old inefficient boiler, disabled child. We use 4000kwh electric a year and 22000 of gas so basically double the average family as quoted by the government

LadyDanburysHat · 07/12/2022 09:46

Just got my November bill and its £160 for electric and £167 for gas. Gas could be lower if I didn't have the heating on working from home, but it's bloody freezing and I'm not going to feel ill all day being cold. I dread to think what December will be as the temps drop more.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/12/2022 10:23

@Spudina why don’t you have a gas meter

how can you do readings or check theirs are right

waiting for our nov dec bill. Sure comes on 8th usually so tomorrow

Catlady2021 · 07/12/2022 10:56

Seriously I don’t understand how it’s acceptable that we’re paying this much. It’s going higher in April too.
We were paying £130 last year in the winter and now it’s atleast double.

We can’t rely on the war ending before bills come down because that could be years away. No one knows.

No one should be paying £300 per month or more for energy.

Do you know what the forecast prices are from April? I think the government help is still running then though?

We pay £300 a month will be £500 in Jan. I believe that puts us in the fuel poverty bracket but I'm very aware there are people alot less fortunate than us.

Our nearest warm bank only accepts children on one day which is a nursery day anyway for my toddler 🙄

"Cornwall Insight’s forecast per unit rate for the first quarter of 2023 for electricity stands at 66.76p/kWh which compares with 34.00 p/kWh under the Energy Price Guarantee. The figures for gas are 17.05p/kWh and 10.30p/kWh respectively."

^ sorry that was in response to @Decafflatteplease

amusedbush · 07/12/2022 13:46

We're with Bulb. In November we used £120 of electricity and £40 of gas.

However, they recently reduced our DD from £120 to £80 per month as we have about £400 of credit built up so that should take us through the coldest months.

I'll also look at getting that electricity usage down - I've been moaning at DH about using the gas central heating but clearly I've been focusing on the wrong thing.

xogossipgirlxo · 07/12/2022 14:13

I still have got 8 days until my normal billing date, but so far:

14 Sep-5 Dec
Gas £160.17
Elec £185.60

It doesn't include £66 per month from government.

xogossipgirlxo · 07/12/2022 14:13

I am on variable tariff, as I CBA with hideous fixed ones offered by British Gas.

RudolphTheGreat · 07/12/2022 14:29

6Nov-5Dec gas £30 electric £54. I got a fix just before everything went haywire though.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/12/2022 06:41

Jesus fucking Christ !!! Just under £354 this month

Blondes faints

So what are your energy bills this month?
MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 08/12/2022 06:57

Ours was £101 for electric and £69 for gas.

I'm expecting dec to be much higher as with this weather the heating will need to be on more and the tumble dryer used.

Yesterday was the first day we really had the heating on more, it was on for 4hrs and 12 mins.

Catlady2021 · 09/12/2022 19:16

Typical isn’t it. We’ve had some fairly mild winters recently. But it’s inevitable that we’re going to have a cold winter this year, with the war in Ukraine, and energy bills going up.

I just knew we’d be punished with a bad winter ahead.
