What are your honest thoughts on Fireworks?

Last night, we had fireworks going off all night. Last year, ddog was a puppy, and was fine inside. Last night, he was cowering and shaking with fear. He spent the majority of the evening on my lap (not easy as he thinks he's a lap dog, despite his size 😊)
I'm all for organised fireworks events, but allowing people to set them off into the early hours is wrong in my opinion. I think they should be banned for personal use.

We love watching them out the window and. Thankfully the dcs sleep through them
However i do understand animals and other people are scared. But personally for us it isn't an issue.
Doesn't mean to say in future the dcs will sleep through them though

Sparklingbrook · 25/10/2022 20:25

I think it just gives the dog haters an excuse to slag off dogs more.

I hate dogs and my cat doesn't care but I think that all animals both wild and domesticated don't deserve to be terrified for weeks on end by fireworks.

blobby10 · 25/10/2022 20:27

Loved then when I was young but since I had children in my 20s I’ve hated them - they are so loud these days! I still like the pop fizz ones that explode into twinkling lights but not the big bang ones

BingoLingFucker · 25/10/2022 20:33

I hate the noise.
My dogs are ok with them, but many dogs aren’t.
Silent ones would be fine.
Regulating the sale of them or only allowing them in specific dates should be a thing as random surprise fireworks are awful.

piesforever · 26/10/2022 06:39

Fireworks are great. my dog is fine, just get them familiar. It was the norm 30 years ago, and were the dogs fine then?

piesforever · 26/10/2022 06:42

Most cities have banned organised displays due to costs! Also, Diwali is generally not an organised display.

DoubleBuggyDriver · 26/10/2022 06:43

I love the colours and find them so pretty but I honestly can’t stand the noise. Bonfire night and NY is the fucking worst! They start around 7/8pm and go on all the way until 3/4am, it’s so irritating

I should imagine some dogs were scared 30 years ago and, no doubt, so were other animals.

Don't forget though that 30 years ago fireworks were nowhere near as noisy as they are now. They get louder each year and do literally make windows rattle. So loud that the loudest music or tv cannot drown it out. Sound like bombs going off.

I did get my dog to be ok with fireworks and all other loud noises by playing videos, cd's etc. He was fine until he was about 5 years old and then I was walking him about 3pm (so it was light) and someone let a firework off as we walked past their garden). My dog was terrified and tried to run.

He has been scared ever since and no amount of playing videos and cd's changes that.

It wasn't even close to diwali, bonfire night or new year. Just another self entitled moron

I don’t remember fireworks going off for weeks on end 30 years ago.

berksandbeyond · 26/10/2022 09:15

I think that outside of organised professional displays, they're a sign of lower class

TicketToRideFan · 26/10/2022 09:15

My dogs are fine with them. I personally hate them.

LadyHelenaJustina · 26/10/2022 09:20

I love them, but I think they should only be available to professionals at planned displays.

Emily1583 · 26/10/2022 09:24

I deffo think they should only be made available for licenced shows rather than being sold to Joe Public. Too many immature and stupid people about unfortunately who can't be trusted to be responsible with fireworks. Every year you hear of some idiots tying them to an animal or letting them off in someone's postbox or something.

TrashyPanda · 26/10/2022 09:28

I love fireworks. Grew up before there were organised displays. Back then, it was for a couple of hours on the 5th and at midnight on New Years Eve.

Things have got out of hand now.
bigger fireworks means more risk of injury
people setting them off at random times
I agree that they should be for organised displays only.
Should be taken off sale for the public.

Scarecrowrowboat · 26/10/2022 09:29

Love them, love the noise and the lights even seeing little displays in other peoples gardens makes me happy.

Yes that's true. People used to have fireworks on the right day i.e. 5th November a week or more either side of that date.

Even when the 5th falls at a weekend some people will be letting them off every night the week before and every night the week after.

So many total idiots today

etulosba · 26/10/2022 09:45

If I remember correctly, they were only on general sale in the week leading up to November 5th. They were quite difficult to get hold of outside those dates.

Yes I remember that too. My Dad would have to go off and hunt some down. He’d then have to find the trusty big tin to keep them in and the sand to stick them in.
There were lots of public service ads too about firework safety. I’m sure there was one where a ticket ended up in a pram? ☹️
I thought NYE fireworks were a relatively new thing, same as ones at weddings.

Rocket not ticket

etulosba · 26/10/2022 09:50

Rocket?

etulosba · 26/10/2022 09:54

The excellent annual organised display in our village came to an end after a rocket landed on a thatched roof and burnt the house down.

Sparklingbrook · 26/10/2022 09:56

etulosba · 26/10/2022 09:50

Rocket?

Yes my auto correct put ticket instead of rocket!

BooksAndHooks · 26/10/2022 09:57

I love fireworks, I understand why others don’t like them but they are one of my favourite things and the noise is part of the attraction, silent ones aren’t the same.

AutumnScream · 26/10/2022 10:18

I absolutely love them but think they should only be for scheduled organised displays so people with pets can be warned, they start and end at certain time and the organisers clean them up after so wildlife doesn't get harmed.

AutumnScream · 26/10/2022 10:20

Also should only be three times a year, diwali, guy fawks night and new year.
