What are your honest thoughts on Fireworks?

Last night, we had fireworks going off all night. Last year, ddog was a puppy, and was fine inside. Last night, he was cowering and shaking with fear. He spent the majority of the evening on my lap (not easy as he thinks he's a lap dog, despite his size 😊)
I'm all for organised fireworks events, but allowing people to set them off into the early hours is wrong in my opinion. I think they should be banned for personal use.

Take him for much longer walks than you normally do. I tired dog is less likely to be stressed. Then crate him.

Unfortunately this isn't possible at the moment as he's just been neutered and we've been told to only do short walks for a week or so.

I love fireworks and the whole period of Halloween and bonfire night. I love a garden display and prefer that to the organised ones tbh. I think they bring a little bit of joy to many in a world where joy seems to be in short supply.

My cat is terrified of the hoover, thunder and lightening storms, her cat box, having flea treatment administered, strange people coming into the house, the cat belonging to next door but one's, and sometimes us if we are wearing hats! Not sure we can or should ban all of that!

I don't think the world can revolve around your dog.

I don't think anyone thinks the world can revolve around their dog but selfish attitudes like yours are out of order.

As quite a few posters have pointed out, but you and a couple of other posters, choose to ignore is that is not just dogs that hate fireworks. Wildlife, I am pretty sure, are going to be scared as well as quite often injured. Some children are scared, elderly people, people with ptsd.

Most people would be happy with just organised displays. They are not asking for fireworks in general to be banned although there is no real use for them unlike the things your cat is scared of!

tigger1001 · 25/10/2022 13:25

Love a good firework display but don't think they should be sold to the public. Organised displays only.

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 25/10/2022 08:02

All these problems would be solved if they just made silent ones

I agree. Silent ones are fine

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/10/2022 13:34

I love them.

I love a good firework display and think they do add something to an evening event on a dark winter night (NYE, bonfire night, Diwali, weddings etc). They obviously need to be handled with care and rely on a sensible adult ensuring everyone at the event stays at a safe distance.

I accept that random fireworks being set off in residential areas on a regular basis can become a nuisance so I would not be against increased regulatation which makes it harder for people to buy fireworks if it is not for an organised event.

I probably hear fireworks a handful of times a year and they generally don't go on for any longer than about 30 minutes so for those that don't like them it's not like you are being subjected to them 365 days a year

Well lucky you only hearing them a handful of times a year and they don't go on for longer than 30 minutes.

In many areas they go on for weeks and can last hours.

Have you actually read the thread?

Where I live they usually start around 5pm and go on until about midnight. They are almost continuous.

Also people let them off from the end of October because of Halloween and then literally every night for the next 3 weeks. I can never understand why. Halloween is ONE night and bonfire night is also ONE night.

Bestcatmum · 25/10/2022 13:37

Absolutely sick of them, they scare my rescue cats to death with the exception of the deaf one who used to like to go out and watch the lights in the sky.
They are terrible for wildlife, go on for months and every year someone I know is badly injured.
They should be banned except for public displays on one weekend only.

Couldn’t give a shit about animals, love a firework- but they should probably be banned for personal use for safety.
our councils though have used covid to stop the expense of our local free display!

Aren't you a delight 🙄

MrsArrDee · 25/10/2022 13:57

The organised displays around here are usually fantastic, well organised and well supported and generally raise money for local charities.

My DD and DDog aren't generally bothered by the noise, but I cannot stand the mess they make. I picked up several rocket sticks this morning, they were scattered in our local park and while you obviously can't tell which stick is yours, at least do a litter pick the day after (same goes for organised displays too)

MrsMacnair · 25/10/2022 14:29

Someone was setting off fireworks nearby quite late last night. So this will be it now until Bonfire night, we’ll have a short break then they’ll start going off on the lead up to Christmas and new year.
New Year is always worse than Bonfire night in my area. I hate it!

So for that reason I’m well behind organised displays only
But Fireworks for sale to the general public for home use….No! They should be banned.

Remember a few years ago Neighbour over the back let them off in his really tiny garden, my house and windows were hit a couple of times sounded like bombs going off my cats were petrified!

MrsMacnair · 25/10/2022 14:40

Forgot to add next doors dog (working security dog & Lives outside) barks every single time a firework goes off even in the distance. He’s fine tuned to listen out for noise with being a guard dog.
Next door go to our local display and the rest of us at home have to listen to constant the barking from 5pm onwards….it’s a nightmare!

@mydogisthebest

Have you actually read the thread?

The OP asked for our honest opinion on fireworks, I'm not sure why I need to read the whole thread to give my opinion?

Just because my experience is not the same as yours it doesn't mean my opinion is less valid

Toddlerteaplease · 25/10/2022 14:49

Love them. And yes I have cats. They are completely unbothered by them.

I asked if you had read the thread because you state that fireworks only happen a handful of times a year and only last about half an hour.

Read the thread and you will see posters having to put up with weeks and weeks of selfish idiots letting fireworks off from early evening until quite late. Certainly later than is allowed by law.

Your experience doesn't seem to be the same as most peoples. I have friends across the country and they all complain about the length of time the fireworks for on for and the hours they are let off.

mylittleyumyum · 25/10/2022 15:56

I love them, especially on a crisp, clear, frosty evening. It just heralds in winter for me.

My cat is totally nonplussed by them, and all the dogs I grew up with over the years were the same.

Nowadays there are suddenly thousands of freaked out pets. How do farm animals react? Or service animals?

And I'm interested in whether the animals at Flamingoland express any annoyance during their yearly fireworks display.

HauntedCabinet · 25/10/2022 16:05

Yup, that is the point I think multiple people have been trying to make: that they affect far more than just cats and dogs. Farm aniamls, horses, wild animals would all appear to be impacted. Also zoo animals.

Service animals is an odd comparison because an animal would be very unlikely to qualify for service unless they were resilient to large, sudden noises. So that's a self-excluding group, really.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 25/10/2022 16:06

Hate them. They're getting bigger and louder every year, and being used anti-socially more and more. Who thought it was a good idea to sell explosives over the counter?

strangelyenough · 25/10/2022 16:07

Love them but there is no need for the ones that just do a huge bang.

Mylakk · 25/10/2022 16:14

Definitely don't think they should be available to Joe Public.

Licenced displays only and with a very limited acceptable timeframe.

Mylakk · 25/10/2022 16:26

My pets (dogs and cats) have never been bothered either @HauntedCabinet but a horse in our village ended up with a nasty injury because some decided to have a random fireworks display without giving anyone a warning. The horse was in a field very close by freaked out.

A local teenager was also very badly injured by some nasty putting a lit firework down their trousers.

Injuries and freaked out animals aside - it isn't ok to make a massive amount of noise and wake so many people up even if it is before 11 pm (ignoring the standard times when they are to be expected up until 1 am - even though annoying) - although as it is their one-off 50th birthday on a Wednesday in March it doesn't matter if it is 2 am this time does it?

Crucible · 25/10/2022 16:29

Complete and total ban or introduction of silent fireworks only. There is no need for the noise.

Well I can't speak for all zoo animals or all horses, cows, sheep, mice, badgers etc etc but last year a neighbour's horse miscarried because of fright after fireworks were let off very close to her.

I find it hard to believe that the really loud ones that are like bombs going off do not cause distress and often injury to animals.

I have read stories of horses running in panic and crashing into fences or barbed wire. A horse than jumped the hedge along the edge of it's field in panic and badly injured itself so had to be pts.

Also stories of dogs that have jumped fences of their garden in panic and been injured or killed by cars.

Fireworks can be so dangerous and sadly there are just too many idiots around. When I was small we used to have a small firework party in our back garden with a few catherine wheels, rockets and sparklers. Now people want bigger, better and far far far noiser. Why do fireworks need to sound like bombs and make your windows rattle?

onlythreenow · 25/10/2022 19:37

I don't think the world can revolve around your dog.

Some posters on this thread seem to be hard of understanding! It's not about one or two dogs ffs. Do you imagine wildlife enjoy fireworks? Do you think the fire service and medical people look forward to this time of year? Fireworks in the hands of responsible people just might be okay, but surely it's not difficult to grasp that in the hands of idiots they are dangerous. Grant me strength!

I think it just gives the dog haters an excuse to slag off dogs more.

Pancakeorcrepe · 25/10/2022 20:21

They should be banned. People who let off fireworks are incredibly selfish, there is no way around it.
Why would you cause injury and distress to wildlife and pets for the sake of a few lights in the sky?!
