What are your honest thoughts on Fireworks?

Last night, we had fireworks going off all night. Last year, ddog was a puppy, and was fine inside. Last night, he was cowering and shaking with fear. He spent the majority of the evening on my lap (not easy as he thinks he's a lap dog, despite his size 😊)
I'm all for organised fireworks events, but allowing people to set them off into the early hours is wrong in my opinion. I think they should be banned for personal use.

I think they should be for organised displays only.
Allowing anyone (over the minimum age) to purchase small bombs is insane to me.

I think if fireworks had only been invented these days, they'd wouldn't be allowed on general sale.

AandFsMum · 26/10/2022 12:07

How about training your dog not to be scared?
Should we ban thunderstorms too?

Absolutely!

I think they should be banned from public sale and for organised events only.

As I have said, more than once on here, I DID train my dog not to be scared. Played videos of fireworks and other loud noises to him from a puppy.

Worked a treat until he was about 5 and an inconsiderate arsehole let off a firework at 3pm (so light) as we walked past their garden. My dog was terrified and I was lucky I could hold on to his lead to stop him just trying to run home.

It wasn't even close to diwali, bonfire night or new year so no reason to think any fireworks would be going off.

I have never been able to stop him being scared since.

Comparing thunderstorms is just silly. We don't get thunderstorms from 5pm to midnight night after night for 3 weeks or longer do we?

xogossipgirlxo · 26/10/2022 15:19

I think they should be sold to professionals only. Too many accidents using them. One exploded near my husband's ear (when he was a kid) and his hearing is impaired. I feel sorry for animals too.

Also should only be three times a year, diwali, guy fawks night and new year.

What about Chinese New Year?

Yes, I agree. If people could be trusted not to let them off at stupid times and for days on end, it would be fine, but they can't.

reigatecastle · 26/10/2022 16:46

How about training your dog not to be scared because it's so easy to do that. I don't even like dogs, but that's just a stupid comment.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 26/10/2022 16:48

I used to think they were ok. Then my white cat used to hide anywhere he could and now my rescue cat (tabby and white) is even more scared than he was and hides anywhere, under the sofa usually.

Not helped by a house near us that holds them or seems to, every other month. Only for a few hours but still.

I appreciate people like them for November 5th, Diwali, Chinese New Year, NYE etc but why for weddings/birthdays? It's just because they can buy and let them off?

In Japan only silent ones are allowed.

I do worry about the effect on wildlife, foxes, fieldmice, horses etc.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 26/10/2022 16:49

Oh and I tried lots of things with the cats to help them but nothing worked at all. Or only very slightly.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 26/10/2022 16:50

Save fireworks for organised displays only.

Spanielsarepainless · 26/10/2022 16:59

I agree. Organised displays only.

And the award for the most ridiculous comment goes to.....

You do realise it's not just dogs? That fireworks cause injury to wild animals and livestock? And there are people who are also terrified of them? Dementia sufferers, people with ptsd for example.

More people are injured and vexed by dogs and the behaviour of dog owners than fireworks.

I'll sign, but you might do better to start a new thread.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 19/01/2023 13:59

Sort of a zombie thread but if Japan have silent fireworks then why can’t we have silent or low noise ones?

marmaladepop · 19/01/2023 20:30

Definitely banned in private apart from maybe sparklers/silent fireworks. My dog is terrified too. I've also never witnessed a flock of birds flee from their trees in terror the pitch black the night before the Queens funeral, when some inconsiderate bastard was letting off industrial sounding bombs near us.

sgtmajormum · 13/11/2023 22:58

Fireworks are fine as long as they are considerate. Choose low noise, sensible times etc. Not like my effing neighbours who set off really loud ones for over 2 hours

Iwasthebadsadone · 14/11/2023 00:31

I love fireworks but we never have them ourselves. They should not be sold to the public at all and should only be used with a licence at official displays.

coxesorangepippin · 14/11/2023 01:05

Banned.

The son of my neighbour lost his eye last year to a firework.

InTheCheapSeats · 14/11/2023 02:50

With the exception of licenced, organised displays, I'd ban them outright.
Too many people are injured, maimed and killed with them, not to mention animals being terrified.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 14/11/2023 07:36

It’s been worse than ever this year.

I want them
banned.
