What are your honest thoughts on Fireworks?

Last night, we had fireworks going off all night. Last year, ddog was a puppy, and was fine inside. Last night, he was cowering and shaking with fear. He spent the majority of the evening on my lap (not easy as he thinks he's a lap dog, despite his size 😊)
I'm all for organised fireworks events, but allowing people to set them off into the early hours is wrong in my opinion. I think they should be banned for personal use.

I wish they could make silent ones. I love seeing them but hate the fact that they scare the ponies, dogs and presumably the wildlife. I don't believe anyone who has fireworks can be an animal lover.

dubyalass · 25/10/2022 08:09

I love them, but they terrify animals (wild or domestic) and for that reason, it's a nope. Our poor wildlife is under enough pressure as it is, it doesn't need scaring to death by fireworks. So: organised displays with minimal loud bangs, yes. For sale to the general public? Absolutely not.

PuttingDownRoots · 25/10/2022 08:10

I love a good display. But licensed displays only or certain dates. (diwali, 5th November, NYE, other religious dates).

When we lived in Germany it was NYE plus a few organised displays. The German noise laws are brilliant (although the Sunday rules do seem odd...)

Willbe2under2 · 25/10/2022 08:10

Love them. Can't wait for dd to grow up so we can start going to displays again. Some of my favourite memories growing up was going to displays with my family 🎆

Chesneyhawkes1 · 25/10/2022 08:10

Hate them. Not just cos of my dogs but because last night they were going off tik really late and my work alarm was set for 3am

SuperCamp · 25/10/2022 08:11

I love them!

And I love people celebrating with them, but like any noisy activity they need to be considerate and not late at night. I live in a Diwali celebrating area, and people didn’t set off fireworks until last night. Loved it!

RoachTheHorse · 25/10/2022 08:11

I love fireworks. They're dramatic, exciting, and beautiful. However, The loud ones should also only be used by licensed people for professional shows on specific days of the year. Eg new year, Diwali etc.

Silent fireworks should be licensed for use for weddings and other more regular events but still only for use by those who know what they're doing.

Sparklers and some silent volcanoes only for household use. It's the only way I can see to stop the anti social behaviour of weeks of constant bangs.

FourChimneys · 25/10/2022 08:11

I love them but would prefer silent ones as they would be better for wildlife.

People saying that they should only be on or near 5 November surely don't think that is the only time people use them for celebrations? That would be a very narrow minded view of multiculturalism.

BMW6 · 25/10/2022 08:11

I love the look but loathe yhe really loud ones.

Also, you wouldn't believe the state of the small park in front of our street - masses of firework debris, wrappers, boxes, plastic. All just strewn everywhere. There are 4 bins and no attempt to put any of it in any of them.

PopTartsAreLife · 25/10/2022 08:12

Used to love them but since having children and a dog I now hate them! I still think they are beautiful to look at, at an organised display, but the ones going off at all hours round our way freak out my dc with ASD and worry the dog.

BonesOfWhatYouBelieve · 25/10/2022 08:12

Hate them for pets, kids, and anyone with ptsd. They don't bother me overmuch personally, but I'm not the only person in the world.

I agree with this. I don't like watching them as I find them incredibly boring, but they don't particularly bother me, however given the effect on others (including animals both pets and wildlife) I'd happily see them banned.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/10/2022 08:13

Couldn’t give a shit about animals, love a firework- but they should probably be banned for personal use for safety.
our councils though have used covid to stop the expense of our local free display!

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 25/10/2022 08:14

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 25/10/2022 08:02

All these problems would be solved if they just made silent ones

Or is they were banned.

They problem is not just noise. Fireworks are very damaging for the environment. both in their production and in their use.

fernz · 25/10/2022 08:15

Hate them. Most of them are not even beautiful, just incredibly loud.

I was hoping people would decide to not spend money on them this year...

SomePosters · 25/10/2022 08:15

They should be for organised displays only

and there is no need for them to sound so much like guns and bombs going off, it is distressing for lots of veterans and refugees who have lived through that as well as many pets.

i tried to inoculate my dog against them by taking her to displays when young, playing the sounds etc. thought I was very clever.
Then the person who looked after my dog had a dog scared of fireworks and she caught it from them.

in 2020 when all there were no organised displays we had neighbours setting them off on every side of the house.
She was sweating, dogs aren’t supposed to sweat! I thought she was going to die from a heart attack.

I don’t care how much a few people like the noise it can’t possibly be as much as the many who hate and fear it.

There is no need

girlmom21 · 25/10/2022 08:16

I love professional displays. I think you should only be able to buy low noise ones for domestic use.

DriftwoodOnTheShore · 25/10/2022 08:16

I love them but think there should be a limit on the volume of those sold to the public. Love organised displays but think garden one should continue. Our boys loved them.

It's Diwali, which is why there are a lot about at the moment.

etulosba · 25/10/2022 08:17

They don’t bother me, but where I live I only hear them sporadically a couple of days either side of bonfire night.

I was in a midlands city yesterday evening and it was like a war zone, so I can see why people do get upset.

Natsku · 25/10/2022 08:18

Love them but they should be restricted. In my country they're only allowed for the general public on New Year's Eve so you don't have to worry about fireworks going off on any random night scaring your pets and babies, its just the one night.

feistymama75 · 25/10/2022 08:19

Absolutely love them, always have and always will.

I agree for safety that you shouldn't just be able to buy them in the supermarket etc but have no issue with them being used year round for weddings etc

Had dogs my whole life and dislike the animal lovers that constantly moan about them. As others have said there are steps you can take to work on any issues.

Blossomandbee · 25/10/2022 08:20

They should be for organised displays only. They shouldn't be allowed in residential areas.

jay55 · 25/10/2022 08:20

Loved watching them all from my window last night(I live high up with a great view), could see hundreds of different displays. It was lovely, brightening up a grey day.
Looking forward to more over the next couple of weekends.

I love the smell too.

As a student when I lived in Manchester I hated them due to the number of kids throwing them in the street, it was like living in a war zone.

marmaladepop · 25/10/2022 08:20

Fucking hate them. My dog is terrified and barks all night. I've seen birds flee from trees in the dark recently when selfish ignorant neighbours let off industrial sounding ones. I'm also noise sensitive as a person. They should be only be allowed at organised displays other than sparklers.

PeterPomegranate · 25/10/2022 08:21

Love them. Diwali is big round here so loads last night. My children always slept through them and we don’t have pets so I guess I haven’t had the negative effects personally. I can see how environmentally they’re bad though 🙁

DNBU · 25/10/2022 08:22

It was Diwali yesterday, so you should have expected them.

Generally I think it should be limited to professional displays on Diwali and Bonfire night. They’re a bit of a nuisance.
