What are your honest thoughts on Fireworks?

Last night, we had fireworks going off all night. Last year, ddog was a puppy, and was fine inside. Last night, he was cowering and shaking with fear. He spent the majority of the evening on my lap (not easy as he thinks he's a lap dog, despite his size 😊)
I'm all for organised fireworks events, but allowing people to set them off into the early hours is wrong in my opinion. I think they should be banned for personal use.

Fine in organised displays on Bonfire Night. They should be banned for home use. Don’t see the point of them at weddings really.

otherwayup · 25/10/2022 08:27

Absolutely hate them.
So destructive to the environment, which I had no idea until recently.
They need to be banned and viewed as something we used to do!

Thorilicious · 25/10/2022 08:27

Totally expected them, but not at 1am!

Hate home fireworks.
prefer organised events

happygertie · 25/10/2022 08:29

I absolutely love fireworks, they mesmerise me. However, it still blows my mind that anyone can buy them, they are explosives and cause soo many injuries in the wrong hands and distress all sorts of animals and wildlife. Not to mention the yearly reports of idiots setting them off at fire fighters, threw letterbox's etc.

I would much prefer them if they were silent and only available for licensed organised events.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 25/10/2022 08:31

Local displays yes

Back gardens no.

AriettyHomily · 25/10/2022 08:32

Hate the fucking things. If it was organised displays only for eg Diwali, 5th November, NYE I'd be more tolerant but the fuckers letting off random rockets at 130 am last night really piss me off. The animal as are terrified.

DozyFox · 25/10/2022 08:36

I think they're pretty, but seeing as they're so bad for the environment (not just the noise) and they frighten so many people and animals, I'd be happy for them to be banned.

I truly don't understand how people find them exciting. I'm someone who loves a good thunderstorm - that is exciting! Something about the power of nature and the unpredictability of it. I don't understand how Dave across the road setting off some fireworks because it's his 50th birthday has the same effect...

Usernamesarenoteasy · 25/10/2022 08:38

I hate them. Especially the ignorant wanker who was setting them off at 2.15 this morning.
IMO they Should be for organised displays only.

Trulyweird1 · 25/10/2022 08:39

Completely fogged in the last couple of nights, and yet there were the bangs of fireworks at all hours. They annoy me more than they annoy the dogs.
Yes to silent ones; yes to licensed displays with reasonable hours.
Big no to my drunken neighbour letting his New Year fireworks off at all hours because he’s too pissed to track the time .

HauntedCabinet · 25/10/2022 08:41

I think they are one of those things that probably belong in the past now - beautiful though they are. I have loved displays over the years, and used to take our rather bomb proof family dog to the town one - he rather enjoyed hoovering up all the dropped food Grin. But have not been to one now for about a decade.

They cause so much environmental and welfare damage (to animals and humans) that I think it might be a case of 'when we know better, we do better'.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/10/2022 08:42

Ought to be licensed, public displays only.

Costacoffeeplease · 25/10/2022 08:45

I’m so glad that we live in a country where fireworks are not available to the general public. We have organised displays twice a year for about ten minutes each and that’s it.

That’s how it should be.

Those bloody Chinese lanterns are banned too

BigFatLiar · 25/10/2022 08:45

Organised displays fine. They can be spectacular.
Ones from the shop, expensive and a bit rubbish. Always seems a bit strange that we let kids run around with explosives.

I'm sure that a&e could do without the burns and fingers blown off.

sanityisamyth · 25/10/2022 08:47

I have a chemistry degree so I love them - spend most of the display thinking what metals were used and reactions are happening etc sad life but there's no need for the huge amounts of noise. There are silent/quiet ones available so don't understand why those aren't used more. Lots of domestic and wild animals are frightened, alongside the more vulnerable members of the human population. Time needed for change.

TenoringBehind · 25/10/2022 08:48

Organised displays on a limited number of days per year only in any location. Noise limit too.

Mojitomogul · 25/10/2022 08:49

Agree with should be professional display only. Really affects my dog, dreading the 5th. Didn't realise it was Diwali, even so was more a festival of sound round here rather than light. Have recording and sounds like bombs and gunshots going off. Don't think they used to make them so loud and violent sounding. Must be horrendous for war veterans suffering PTSD. Yes they can be lovely to look at, but is it worth the anxiety, stress, destruction they cause ?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 25/10/2022 08:51

Yeah last night was bad and my cat was cowering behind the sofa. I thought well it's Diwali but they were still going off last 11pm which ttp a bit

Iwasthebadsadone · 25/10/2022 08:52

Organised displays only. Complete ban on public use.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 25/10/2022 08:52

Violashift · 25/10/2022 08:05

I like them but not every night randomly for about a month. Maybe the 4th and 5th only or the weekend of would be more acceptable.

What about Diwali then?

ErrolTheDragon · 25/10/2022 08:53

I would much prefer them if they were silent and only available for licensed organised events.

Yes, that would be much more tolerable. Events only at civilised hours not the middle of the night - I'm sure NYE fireworks pretty much only happened in Trafalgar Square before Millennium night.

And nowadays big displays are starting to be replaced by drone light shows, that's a positive move.

Fire lanterns should be banned, obviously. There's no excuse for them.

Mol1628 · 25/10/2022 08:54

I like them. But should be organised displays only.

my dog is terrified of them. But we prepare for it on the nights around 5th November. We make sure she’s not left alone. Tv is up loud, curtains closed and she’s toileted before dark so she does ok. But now they start mid October and just go on and on right through to new year randomly so we don’t get chance to prepare. Sometimes people let them off in the middle of the day and it terrifies the life out of her as she’s usually wandering in and out of the garden.

stopringingme · 25/10/2022 08:54

I don't think they should be available to the general public, there should only be organised displays and the displays should only be allowed on a limited amount of days a year.

MajesticElephant · 25/10/2022 08:55

I love fireworks but support professional public displays only. They are dangerous and terrible for the environment. It’s antisocial behaviour around here as far as I’m concerned as everyone has tiny gardens!

PinkHeadphones · 25/10/2022 08:55

I grew up on the 1970s with small garden firework displays, a few Roman candles, a rocket, a Catherine wheel, sparklers and then a whole load of things that burn green and red and puff out a few dispirited sparks. A bonfire, a guy, and baked potatoes, and everyone going Ooh! with their tongue in their cheek. Scarf and gloves, a torch and abucket full of sand.
That’s what we have done for the kids, and they love it too. Never had anything that makes ridiculous bangs and the whole thing is over in15 minutes. I don’t like organised displays, they are so crowded.
Now I do understand the arguments against being able to buy fireworks. If they were banned I’d accept that. But you asked for honest opinions, and my honest opinion is I love a rubbish garden display and I don’t like a crowded public display where you are hanging around for ages.
