What are your honest thoughts on Fireworks?

Last night, we had fireworks going off all night. Last year, ddog was a puppy, and was fine inside. Last night, he was cowering and shaking with fear. He spent the majority of the evening on my lap (not easy as he thinks he's a lap dog, despite his size 😊)
I'm all for organised fireworks events, but allowing people to set them off into the early hours is wrong in my opinion. I think they should be banned for personal use.

Everyone saying they should only be on 5th November you do know it's Diwali right? I know it's annoying because then that blends into guy Fawkes etc but it's literally called the festival of light.

I grew up on the 1970s with small garden firework displays, a few Roman candles, a rocket, a Catherine wheel, sparklers and then a whole load of things that burn green and red and puff out a few dispirited sparks. A bonfire, a guy, and baked potatoes, and everyone going Ooh! with their tongue in their cheek. Scarf and gloves, a torch and abucket full of sand.
That’s what we have done for the kids, and they love it too. Never had anything that makes ridiculous bangs and the whole thing is over in15 minutes. I don’t like organised displays, they are so crowded.
Now I do understand the arguments against being able to buy fireworks. If they were banned I’d accept that. But you asked for honest opinions, and my honest opinion is I love a rubbish garden display and I don’t like a crowded public display where you are hanging around for ages.

Yeah we used to do them in the garden as well. It seemed really exciting watching my dad set them off

CatchersAndDreams · 25/10/2022 08:57

I absolutely LOVE them. They are so pretty, I don't understand the MN angst over them. I prefer organised displays, especially sea front ones and I really hope they don't get banned.

They're the same people who kick off about Chinese New Year because it's at a different time.

GlumyGloomer · 25/10/2022 08:57

I used to love them unequivocally. Things that changed my mind are:

  • having kids that need to go to sleep (always a challenge but extra hard with the lure of fireworks at the window)
  • my friend's house was damaged when someone put a firework through her letter box
  • I've seen how horrific burn wounds can be. Sadly I doubt I will have set off a home firework again.

I'd be extremely sad if there were no more displays though.

Theowlwhowasafraid · 25/10/2022 08:57

Agree with you OP. Both my dogs are fine with them but they were so loud last night and woke my baby up, you can brace yourself with organised displays but I’m dreading next weekend/week as people will just be letting them off whenever. I love how they look but I hate how loud they are.

Sparklingbrook · 25/10/2022 08:58

Rubbish garden displays are the most dangerous. Leave it to the experts IMO.
Most of the organised displays you don’t even need to go in to see the fireworks. 🤷‍♀️

roarfeckingroarr · 25/10/2022 08:59

Love them. Feel sorry for people with pets but my personal view is they're beautiful

landyland · 25/10/2022 09:00

I honestly really like fireworks and I honestly think most animals are fine with them or just keep them indoors. I think a lot of owners make it worse for their pets with their reactions. My cat is scared of the hoover but dgaf about fireworks.

They are getting quieter as well as are being designed to be pretty but less noisy and this is the compromise for me. They are way less noisy than they were when I was a kid and the bangs are more like pops now, in comparison. People's enjoyment shouldnt be curtailed for the few. Most people enjoy them and haven't got any issues with them.

landyland · 25/10/2022 09:02

But yes, why would you bother doing a crap display in your garden when there are load sof organised displays where they know what they're doing and can spend more on better ones?

Parmesam · 25/10/2022 09:04

Hooligans in the council estate near us threw one at me and DD when she was small. They thought it was funny. Luckily it didn't hurt us but...(shudder)...I prefer fireworks at organised displays. They are better. We went to one in Crystal Palace Park before the pandemic and it was awesome. I don't agree with fireworks being sold to individuals. My cat hates them (obviously) so she hides in the wardrobe in a den we build for her and she waits them out.

You can still have your display and bugger the rest of the planet but quieter ones can be used.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 25/10/2022 09:06

They piss me off, especially when there's random ones going off throughout the year for birthdays etc.

My cat isn't bothered, my toddler isn't bothered and I'm pretty sure they won't bother my baby too much this bonfire night. But they really really drive me mad. Silent ones, fine, but the loud banging ones just for the sake of being noisy make me angry.

I think they should be banned for personal use and only organised events should be able to use them, but silent ones only.

onlythreenow · 25/10/2022 09:08

Organised displays only. They terrify animals, cause fires, and injure people. And yet it continues.

onlythreenow · 25/10/2022 09:09

Most people enjoy them and haven't got any issues with them.

Have you asked firefighters and medical staff about that?

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 25/10/2022 09:12

They should be organized displays only. I like fire works but it's the fact that between now & new year they will be some going off EVERY night.

comedycentral · 25/10/2022 09:12

I like them but not in private households. They really should be part of organised and regulated displays.

Because you can go for a piss when you want in a clean toilet and not get mugged off paying a fiver for a hotdog and a tenner for those spinny light things for the kids, is my guess Grin

Based on my experience last night, you could be forgiven for thinking it was the festival of incessant loud bangs.

whatdoyousayhey · 25/10/2022 09:16

One night a year is fine but they started last weekend here and will go on for at least 2 weeks! My poor cat has been hiding under my bed all night and won’t come out. I just wish people were more considerate.

mydogisthebest · 25/10/2022 09:22

All those posters saying "they are so pretty" are lucky if their neighbours are letting off pretty fireworks. All we ever seem to get are the ones that sound like bombs going off.

Organised displays have pretty fireworks, most household don't seem to. Certainly not where I live in the Midlands or where I live previously in Essex. The noise is horrendous.

One of my dogs is terrified and to see him suffer night after night after night because of selfish idiots is wrong.

He wasn't scared because I spent a lot of time and energy playing firework videos to get him used to the noise. He was fine for years and then one afternoon I was walking him and some absolute moron let off a firework as we walked past their garden. My dog was terrified and I am lucky I could hang on to his lead as he just wanted to run and likely would have run into the road.

That was 3pm and not close to firework night, divali or new year so no excuse to be having fireworks and what idiot has them at 3pm anyway?

Every year there are stories of fireworks being lit and put through letterboxes, thrown at people etc. Plus just how scared must wildlife be?

One of my friends has a dog that has to be sedated as she is so scared. Is it fair to have to sedate her for around 2 weeks?

General public should definitely not be allowed to buy them. Organised events only

"Getting quieter"!!!!!! Are you serious?

Every year they get louder. They honestly sound like bombs going off and, yes, I have heard a bomb going off.

Snailsaresweet · 25/10/2022 09:25

I love them. I prefer public displays as you get more interesting fireworks, but I also enjoy neighbours displays. My cats don't seem to mind them (or indeed thunder) - I have no idea why when they run away from the vacuum.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/10/2022 09:28

I still like them, loved them as a child, but we only ever had the much less noisy back garden fireworks. The really big ones can be deafening - some were going off last night near here - presumably for Diwali. The display without all the noise - or a lot less of it - would be a very good thing.

Chickenpeppers · 25/10/2022 09:29

I love fireworks, from about November onwards a lot of people in my area regularly set them off, the house two doors down from us did a lovely display last year, I'm hoping they do another one this year.
