And will this finally rid of us Jacob Rees Mogg and his ilk?

I've heard the new PM described as left wing by daily Mail types, so it'll be interesting to see how he shapes up the cabinet !
I've no idea what he stands for to be honest

I think the observation was comparitive to other candidates rather than him being remotely left wing.

The DM did the at last a real budget with Truss so they’ve been backing that direction.

Sunak in the past spent a lot, but that will be curtailed due to the situation. He does usually target support though when there is some.

MarshaBradyo · 25/10/2022 10:54

…The whole he doesn’t get my life too rich line bugs me as a if people stopped focusing on emotive stories and on policies instead they’d see he’s been more likely to target to lower incomes.

Crikeyalmighty · 25/10/2022 10:57

Ha- he definitely isn't left wing but I don't think has that touch of the far right psychopath that people like Patel and Braverman have.

AutumnCrow · 25/10/2022 07:39

But that’s precisely the crap that Badenoch is trying to keep out of our kids’ schools and our hospitals, to be fair to her.

(I’m not a fan; she’s too right-wing for me, but I recognise her intelligence and brutal honesty.)

I mean I can't stand her sweeping dismissal of things she disagrees with as 'woke'. It's lazy and dismissive. She may have a point about some elements - it was clear that she was very ill informed about some aspects that she talked about. She's much too rightwing for me.

Crikeyalmighty · 25/10/2022 11:01

My bet is on the following Hunt, Javid, mordant, schapps , Raab, Wallace, Tugendhat, Caulfield, Cleverly,

I think many of the total headbangers will be out- I may be wrong!!

How are Mordaunt and Raab not headbangers?

Crikeyalmighty · 25/10/2022 11:17

@RedToothBrush Well they mainly all are in my book as I'm not a Tory- but maybe less so than people like Rees Mogg, Braverman or Patel in most peoples perceptions

AIMummy · 25/10/2022 11:19

I don't think Sunak can count Wallace as an ally in any sense. Didn't Wallace publicly make some cutting remark about him when Sunak resigned when in Boris's cabinet? He has also inexplicably supported Boris even when the latest comeback attempt seemed doomed & frankly embarrassing which makes me question his judgement & intellect. I don't think he can be trusted at all. I hope he's out.

Sunak needs to have supporters of other factions in his Cabinet to keep the peace.

Wallace should be near the top of that list. Whether he is, remains to be seen.

sashagabadon · 25/10/2022 11:27

Sunak should keep Wallace in place a. Because he’s doing a good job b. Because why make enemies unnecessarily c. The Tory membership like Wallace so it keeps them happy too
It’s good politics

Croque · 25/10/2022 11:31

Penny will stay because he is now obliged to keep her.
Javid will become chancellor (again) because he is better placed than Hunt (and a mate).
Hunt will be moved to another cabinet post.
Gove will be back.
Raab will also have a cabinet post.
Nadine will be gone (forever).

MarshaBradyo · 25/10/2022 11:36

Agree it would be a big mistake to remove Wallace. He’s widely respected and good at his job. I hope Sunak will make the right choice even if slightly difficult

Hunt will not go to another Cabinet Post.

Been tried before. Hunt famously dug his heels in and refused. It ultimately led to him being out of the Cabinet completely.

Sunak knows this. Sunak also knows that actively forcing the Chancellor out at this time is not a wise move for stability.

Hunt WANTS that job.

Also the Chancellor is doing a statement on Monday. Hunt will be part way through this. Another politician will have to start from scratch and do it in a rush. Also not wise for stability.

Croque · 25/10/2022 11:44

Yeah, I suppose Hunt has now secured his position and removing him would suggest cronyism. However, Hunt is not the best person for the job. He had the right attitude and he limited damage when that fool put the economy into freefall. However, he does not have the makings of a credible chancellor.

RedToothBrush · 25/10/2022 11:48

Sunak very chatty at the Palace. Interesting in itself. Especially seeing as it seems he was with the King longer than expected (at least 8 mins over the BBC schedule). The King's first appointment as PM though so a big deal for him (I note the photo of his and Sunak was of them shaking hands not Sunak kissing his hand as was traditional and was the case with the Queen).

We need a personable PM who is able to rebuild relationships with people like Macron and the EU and Nicola Sturgeon, so hope it bodes well.

FuckabethFuckor · 25/10/2022 11:49

I wonder if Hunt will remain as chancellor for now, but perhaps not in the longer term. Maybe a reshuffle in the new year or something like that.

They very much need to communicate stability and continuity at this point. Keeping Hunt in post for now will do that.

RedToothBrush · 25/10/2022 11:50

Rishi with his different lecturn to Liz

RedToothBrush · 25/10/2022 11:58

Admission of mistakes (tick)
Consilatory to predecessors (tick)
Work needs to start immediately (not party / celebrate)
Economic Stability Key (Hunt?)
Difficult decisions needed (pain going to happen)
Appeal to his experience and what he did during covid
Promise to unite with action not work (ouch Boris)
Work Hard (stresses multiple times)
Talks about integrity and experience and quality
Trust is earned (ouch Boris)
Commitment to Manifesto (Braverman nod)
Appreciates how hard it is for everyone (Labour will hit on this)
Opportunity to serve (this was May's good quality).

Speech hit all the right notes and things public are keen for and party want to here.

Not waffling. Short. Not too many uses of the word 'I' (Been noted Johnson's statement about not standing apparently in the national interest used the word I no less than 28 times).

RedToothBrush · 25/10/2022 11:59

The pound likes it.

We now await Cabinet.

Croque · 25/10/2022 12:01

That was bang on the money. He is trying to cultivate a serious, sterner image. No more Cuddly Rishi or Dishy Rishi. He wont let them hold him back because of his age or stature.

noblegiraffe · 25/10/2022 12:04

I'm fascinated to see whether Cleverley completely screwed his chances of staying as Foreign Sec by coming out in support of Johnson at the very last minute.

What an unforced, idiotic error that was.

Not necessarily. It could conversly work the other way around. Sunak needs to look like he has Johnson supporters. He can't have a Cabinet stuffed with only his own supporters.

If he's getting good write ups, then it may well count for him. FCO seem to have made it clear they want a good pair of hands to clean up the mess of recent holders of the job and they want Cleverly. (Note that Foreign Office has had both Johnson and Truss within the last few years and Sunak was consilatory to both Truss and Johnson but made veiled digs about competance and lack of hard work and explicit comment about mistakes).

I note Sunaks emphasis on people who are actually good at jobs and are hard working was repeated theme of his speech. Cleverly was seen yesterday morning visiting No10 and clearly focused on his job, despite everything going on.

We will know soon enough.
