Something really doesn't add up. Why go to the trouble of getting all those mobile bunkers into Kherson if they really are leaving?

Could they be on the other side of the river?

There were at least five different Ru army units in Kherson, with no one in overall command, so chaos would be expected.

Greenshake · 03/11/2022 20:32

I am very ‘hmmmmmm’ about all this

I agree, I also feel very apprehensive because something's 'off' with this allegd withdrawal.

"Locals from Kherson say the Russians have changed into civilian clothes and are hiding all over the city.
At this time military correspondents write that most of the personnel have been withdrawn from the right bank of the Dnipro. Posts are the same..."

Let's hope all the Ukraine soldiers going into Kherson know of the strange goings-on and are not caught unprepared.

Another odd thing is the Russians removing all flagpoles so the Ukranians can't display their own flags as they take each area, yet flags can be raised in many places. And the specific sinking of so many ships.

Hopefully the Ukranians will have much more reliable intel than we have, so they have better picture of the full real if oddball behaviour of the "departing" army.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 03/11/2022 20:35

They are in front of a central admin building so no. Unless the russians were going to use them to defend the city but have abandoned ship and just decided to leave them behind? Or maybe the remaining russian troops will use them?

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 03/11/2022 20:37

There is speculation on twitter that the removal of the Russian flags is so the Ukrainian forces can't spread images or videos of the Russian flag being destroyed on social media. Not so good for domestic consumption? I don't know though.

Can anyone here who reads Russian or Ukrainian make out the name on this building behind the bunkers to check if it is there in Nova Kahkovka, or is this now definite?

Meanwhile in Iran:

Explosive footage coming out of 🇮🇷 tonight! Especially from Karaj, just outside Teheran. Huge crowds and security forces taking losses. It's too late for the regime to turn back the clock. It's a matter of HOW and WHEN the regime will be overthrown, not IF!

Warning some of the footage linked to in this tweet is graphic:

twitter.com/nlwartracker/status/1588293985960796162?s=61&t=xwHeJWz27sA941ljZDExCg

I really hope Iranian people can overthrow their oppressive regime and live as a democracy - as a side benefit this would presumably also completely scupper the Russian/Iranian arms deal.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 04/11/2022 00:21

This clip isn't graphic and shows military police being seen off by Iranian protestors. The genie is well and truly out of the bottle.

Is this the sort of civil unrest Russia would have got involved with if it's forces of oppression weren't otherwise occupied?

Key Takeaways

It is still unclear whether Russian forces will defend Kherson City despite the ongoing withdrawal of some Russian elements from northwestern Kherson Oblast.

Russian forces prematurely deployed newly mobilized personnel to offensive operations in western Donetsk Oblast in the pursuit of minimal and operationally insignificant territorial gains.

Russian outlets continued to publish contradictory and confusing reports about the dismissal of Colonel General Alexander Lapin from the position of CMD commander or commander of the Russian “central” forces.

Russian authorities may be setting conditions to imminently transfer the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant to the Russian power grid.

Russian sources claimed that Ukrainian forces continued to conduct counteroffensive operations in the direction of Kreminna and Svatove.

Russian forces continued offensive operations around Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Donetsk City.

The Russian military continues to face pronounced issues in the supply of critical military equipment.

The Russian Ministry of Defense is likely continuing mobilization efforts covertly.

Russian occupation officials continued forced evacuations in Kherson Oblast.

@MissConductUS would be interested to hear your thoughts on the recent comments from Marjorie Taylor Greene that under the Republicans not a single penny more will go to Ukraine.

I know she's a recognised conspiracy theorist and right wing nut but do you think her views are representative at all?

blueshoes · 04/11/2022 14:18

@ReleaseTheDucksOfWar thanks for the key takeaways.

Those poor boys. So glad they have been released to get the medical treatment soon. I wonder about the state of Ukraine hospitals with so much Russian shelling. Hopefully they can be treated in hospitals in neighbouring NATO countries.

Pentagon: US has no evidence of American aid embezzlement in Ukraine.
The U.S. personnel in Ukraine have conducted multiple inspections of American security assistance supplies over the last couple of months, Voice of America reports.

Incredible. So proud that Ukraine passed this test. No one was tempted to help themselves. The war has galvanised away the more venal instincts that lurk in every population.

I know she's a recognised conspiracy theorist and right wing nut but do you think her views are representative at all?

She once tweeted that wildfires in California were being started by space-based lasers, so there you go. Fortunately, she is not in control of what congress does or does not do. I don't think her views are representative. It is an issue that I think is being fueled behind the scenes by the former guy, probably to feed his addiction to chaos.

I think some republicans are genuinely isolationist, some want more assurance that the money is being spent as intended, and some want to use it as negotiating leverage to get more spending for what they want. I think that this analysis covers it fairly well.

Analysis: U.S. Republicans aim at Ukraine aid but unlikely to block it

The Pentagon has acted preemptively to address the accountability issue and now has people in Ukraine to verify that US military aid is being used as intended.

U.S. military inspectors in Ukraine to keep further track of weapons and equipment

I am concerned about the impact of all of this next year, but I am not greatly concerned. I think US assistance will continue at a high level but with more political wrangling and deal-making. We shall see. It would not hurt if certain large, heavily industrialized European countries stepped up a bit, as the war is closer to them than to us, as some republicans point out.

The results of the midterm elections next Tuesday will tell us a lot.

With apologies about the use of "Tanks" Newsweek piece on Flakpanzer Gepard...

www.newsweek.com/ukraine-war-german-tanks-destroy-iranian-drones-1756993

Sometimes the best solution possibly isn't smart munitions, it's just chucking a large amount of unjammable lead into the airspace occupied by the target......

Now Switzerland, about that ammunition.....

blueshoes · 04/11/2022 17:22

@MissConductUS that Marjorie Taylor Greene lady sounds like a nutter. Your thoughts on the future of Republican support are reassuring. It is as much as can be hoped for.

@notimagain thanks for the link to the German Gepard air defence tanks. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. It would be so great if Ukraine could have them on guard near power stations and other infrastructure facilities. The Ukrainiansalso have better intelligence to be able to position these short range weapons optimally on the battelfield. The tanks somehow remind me of the Aegis/CIWS which MissConductUSA once linked for use on ships (I am probably talking out of my bottom). Watching a video of it, those things just eat ammunition. I hope Switzerland can find a way to get the ammo to Ukraine.

MissConductUS · 04/11/2022 17:55

@notimagain, I agree completely. At short range, there is nothing like a hailstorm of high-speed projectiles.

@blueshoes, MTG is indeed an Olympic-level nutter, probably the worst in congress. And you are spot on in your seeing the similarity to the naval CIWS I posted the video of a while ago. There is a design difference in that the CIWS uses a rotary cannon and the German system uses two stand-alone guns. Both are radar-guided and have very high rates of fire.

The naval CIWS proved so effective that a variant was produced for the army called the C-RAM:

It performed brilliantly in Iraq and Afghanistan and would eat the Iranian drones for breakfast. I suspect it's not being considered for deployment in Ukraine because it's not that easy to ship or move, and the very high cycle rate consumes a lot of ammunition.

MissConductUS · 04/11/2022 18:13

I may have posted too soon. Sending Ukraine C-RAMs is under discussion due to the Russian missile attacks on civilian infrastructure. We have quite a few in storage that were taken out of Iraq and Afghanistan.
