It's strange that those calling for an election on other threads are being told that this is how democracy works. Those same people would be very unhappy if this was a Labour government carrying on in the same way.

NEW from ⁦@ONS⁩ on food inflation - this is how much the lowest priced items have increased over the past few months - some of them by more than 40%

It’s just transparent isn’t it?

Democracy isn’t static, it’s literally about the will of the people and majority agreement. If the need deviates from convention then that’s the way democracy should evolve. A general election is democratic, and importantly, possible, making a statement to the contrary is undemocratic.

Food inflation is where I've noticed the prices increases the most. I'm assuming schools canteens will need to start raising prices again.

FT reporting Johnson will be spending more time in Washington - shoring up support for Ukraine, not giving after dinner speeches to American health insurance providers of course!

It's not like he has an existing job in the Uk or anything. People of Uxbridge can represent themselves!

I'm sure are regular Johnson fans will be able to explain how these after dinner speeches are far more important than doing the day job.

There only needs to be an election if the Tories can't deliver stable government under Sunak.

Blair to Brown. Cameron to May. Thatcher to Major. Wilson to Callaghan. All examples of the PM changing without an election. There only needed to be an election in 2019 because Parliament got itself into a ridiculous impasse over Brexit.

AchillesLastStand · 25/10/2022 10:33

Awful resignation speech from Truss. Why does she look so pleased with herself? I can’t imagine anything more humiliating.

Saucery · 25/10/2022 10:44

I imagine that pension put a smile on her face. Plus, she always knew she was a temp to appease the membership.

Cornettoninja · 25/10/2022 11:09

She thinks she’s ascended to a position of ‘told you so’ and will now cast everything through a lens of ousted heroine as she mourns the lack of support for what could have saved us.

Notonthestairs · 25/10/2022 11:23

Yes she's a martyr for the right wing cause now. We just didn't understand her.

Sunak is going to struggle to keep his tent big enough to embrace all the factions within the Conservatives. I imagine the One Nation Tory's will benefit the least.

Support from the ERG will come with strings - Rwanda, NI protocol, EHCR,, preserving the dream of Brexit. They may reflect Sunak's own dreams but they are no less difficult to implement, let alone introduce successfully and without damaging the nations finances & credibility.

Im becoming increasingly pissed off with the coverage of this.
The BBC following the car , talking about crowds in the street (they are fucking tourists, if anything it'd a quiet day), the hushed voices, the constant reference to his race.

He's not royalty and I don't give a shit about his race.
He is a spoiled little rich boy talking about difficult decisions.

The decisions are easy, do I tax the rich or starve the poor? Do I build on the infrastructure of the country or continue to dismantle it?

Once you have the answer to those you ensure plans are made to make it happen. If that's difficult he shouldn't be in the job. The only reason it could be difficult is because he wants to make the rich richer.

Not impressed so far.

Rishi Sunak promises to “fill tomorrow and every day thereafter with hope”

Why aren't the Truss cabinet being Investigated over tipping off their hedge fund mates about their mini budget?

Jackie Reet Smug gone as business sec.

Where’s he landed?

BewareTheLibrarians · 25/10/2022 13:03

From Beth Rigby on Twitter

BREAK: And so it begins. Just heard that Jacob Rees-Mogg has resigned from govt. A close ally of both Johnson and Truss, I’m told his letter has been delivered to the new PM

Cornettoninja · 25/10/2022 13:04

Whilst it’s lovely to have an apparent adult in post let’s not forget a few things

  • our collective bar is now the floor.
  • RS was an active member of one of the most destructive and corrupt cabinets this country has ever seen
  • His political career surmises he’s basically really lucky and has a knack for being in the right place at the right time.

There’s a lot to prove and a lot of trust to earn. I’m not calling yet whether or not I personally rate him. I seem to remember him being rumoured to push back against furlough despite all the credit he’s getting for it right now.

Asked and answered Grin

bloody good.

BewareTheLibrarians · 25/10/2022 13:09

@Cornettoninja 😁 I just came here straight from seeing that on twitter and had to share, Absolutely very blood good!

I’m trying not to feel too happy though as no doubt there will be plenty of ERG evils stuffed into the cabinet.

I was getting even more annoyed with the references to the first PM was wasn't a Christian. Did Disraeli get removed from the history books while I wasn't looking. I was so glad to hear Kevin Maguire putting that one right last night.

mibbelucieachwell · 25/10/2022 13:14

The (idea) of the furlough scheme should have been in place as part of the pandemic planning - you know, the operation the Conservative government ignored. Having to get something organised in the teeth of an emergency is an utter fail in my book. And he set it up in such a way that it was fraudulently used, costing the taxpayer a needless fortune. I consider the furlough scheme a black mark against Richy Sushi.

My money’s on Mordaunt in the Foreign or Home Office, she’ll have extracted the promise of a big job in exchange for standing down. Javid back to Health. The amusingly named Cleverly and Coffey back to the back benches. Along with the rest of the grotesques.

I thought she didn't get the 100 backers so had to stand down? Did I misunderstnad. I'm just back from the hospital and some very horrible looking needles so I might not be quite with it.

Saucery · 25/10/2022 13:19

The very last thing I thought of while looking at the last 2 PMs was “ooh, they strike me as Christians!” Hmm
