How many times have you taken your DC to A&E?

DH think it's ridiculous the number of times we've been. I think it's pretty normal, we have active outdoorsy DC and have often thought we've been quite luck so far.
5 times with DS, now 12 and 3 times with DD (10).

Neither of mine have ever been to A&E. We took DD to urgent care when she was a baby (told to by 111) as she was screaming and vomiting constantly. Eventually diagnosed with CMPA.

I had to take DS to urgent care once last year because he had an awful ear infection and couldn't eat or sleep. I tried to get him a GP appointment but they couldn't fit him in, so told me to take him there.

My DD 11 has been loads of times - complex additional needs combined with a very high pain threshold means we can’t easily tell how seriously she’s hurt herself, or how serious an illness might be for her. My DS 9 has been once. Different kids, different needs.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 22/10/2022 22:00

I’ve taken DD (8) four or five times as she’s always throwing herself around or falling over roller skating. She’s had two broken bones, wrist and elbow.

DS (11) is a much less physical child and has only been once, for croup when he was a baby.

Dd only once, an ill advised visit in frosty weather (sent by whatever the equivalent was 111 can't remember what it was called). Ds1 3 times, trapped fingers, split chin open, split head open, the last one resulted in a small operation, they sent us off to London for it, no idea why, there surely must have been a surgeon capable in the hospital Hmm.

Ds2 3 times, fever when 2 weeks old, kept in for 2 days was fine, small leg fracture on his first birthday (many many questions, as it should be) hurt leg when he was about 8, wasn't broken.

Msgrieves · 22/10/2022 22:41

The only time I went to A&E as a kid was when I had a compound fracture as a 12 yo, but this was in the days a Dr would do a home visit, had plenty of those (asthma). Its actually sad to see how much the NHS has deteriorated, people expect so little. Even when my first child in 2003 had a bad reaction after her first jabs, I called up and was sent a minibus to traffic me to an out of hours place and seen pretty promptly. I don't think I would have had kids if I had any inkling of the shitshow life is now.

3 times.
Once when he swallowed a coin and was complaining of chest pain.
Twice with a broken collarbone (DS is almost 10)

popandchoc · 22/10/2022 23:14

Once with 11 year old and never with 7 year old . Both have been to urgent care centre about 3 times .

DramaAlpaca · 22/10/2022 23:20

Once each with DS1 and DS3 - a knee injury and a head injury respectively.

DS2, I lost count... several as a child and at least twice as an adult <sigh>

PeppermintyPatty · 22/10/2022 23:23

Child 1 has been 6x: sepsis from untreated tonsillitis (GP refused abx); another tonsillitis not responding to abx and blocking airway in the early hours; once with abdominal pain/suspected appendicitis (was fine); twice in the week following tonsillectomy for bleeding issues; and once for a sprained ankle

Child 2 has been 5x: at 3 weeks old with suspected sepsis caused by a UTI; at 7m with norovirus that ravaged his little body and left him severely dehydrated; at 10 months old with another UTI; at 18m with hand foot and mouth (but his temperature could not be reduced and he had screamed for 6 hours solid); with tonsillitis that wasn’t responding to abx and a fever that could not be controlled, no improvement after 5 days

I think we have been fairly heavy users of A&E compared to the average family. Both children have had IV abx a couple of times.

Jalepenojello · 22/10/2022 23:49

DS - 4 times with breathing issues. Eventually diagnosed asthmatic aged 5 and is coping ok now
DD - 2 times, a burn and an illness with no wet nappies during covid when GP refused to see them. Turned out to be tonsillitis so with a prescription for a numbing throat spray DC could drink again. Nothing a GP couldn’t do

Soontobe60 · 23/10/2022 00:04

I’ve been twice in my life - once when I fainted in the street and once when my appendix ruptured.
DH has been once for a football related incident.
DD1 has been 5 times. Once for stitches when a swing hit her under the chin and 4 times for breaking her arm - same arm, same place every time!
DD2 has been once for the same swing injury as her sister!
between us we have 200+ years and have been 9 times, that’s an average of once every 22 years.

However, my 2 grandchildren have been a total of 4 times in their combined 6 years, an average of once every 18 months. Severe croup twice, chicken pox and drinking half a bottle of Piriton😳.

Serena1977 · 23/10/2022 00:12

Dd10 4 times. Once for missed tonsillitis (worried about sepsis), once for orbital cellulitis and admitted for 9 days including emergency surgery. Once for an accident that needed a wound glueing and finally one when she got a chunk of wood stuck under her nail.

Ds9 countless times with admissions (additional needs)
