How many times have you taken your DC to A&E?

DH think it's ridiculous the number of times we've been. I think it's pretty normal, we have active outdoorsy DC and have often thought we've been quite luck so far.
5 times with DS, now 12 and 3 times with DD (10).

Once. One 6yo

Kim82 · 22/10/2022 09:02

Ds21 - from memory he’s been twice. One when he banged his eye on the corner of a table whilst at nursery and again when he jumped off something and sliced his leg open when he was about 9 or 10.

dd18 - 5 times. Once when she had pneumonia at 20 months, again a few weeks later as they thought she had meningitis (she didn’t thankfully!) and then another 3 times when she has broken her arm - left arm each time in 3 different places!

dd15 - once with a broken wrist

dd8 - many, many times as a baby as she had quite a bad undiagnosed allergy and again about a month ago for a broken wrist.

I’m not sure why my dc seem so fond of wrist breaking…

P0ndering · 22/10/2022 09:05

DD9 - once, broken arm
DS7 - twice broken foot bone and another accident needed seeing to.
DS 5- 2 head injuries, 1 possibly swallowed a ball bearing... we never found it! Plus 7 or 8 admissions with bronchiolitis! Was a few years where I felt we were never away!

I should add to my list that inevitably toddler DD would always fall or bash herself badly on a weekend, so no GP open and we were often told to go to A&E by 111 or GP!

I think with all sorts of things like head&face injuries and potential meningitis both 111 and GP are super cautious with under-twos when they would be much less so with older children (who can also articulate what is wrong). That doesn’t seem to me to be a bad thing. I don’t think the causes of the crisis in NHS emergency services are even remotely connected to a few too many toddlers being seen at A&E for a bash on the head/suspicious rash.

lemonjam · 22/10/2022 09:06

Eldest dd 3 times - one anaphylaxis, one bad cut needing stitches, and once because she got something stuck up her nose 😑 all under 5.

Middle ds- have actually lost count - one broken bone and many many times for croup.

Youngest - never yet, aged three!

Fridaysgirl17 · 22/10/2022 09:06

Once when 5 year old was a newborn that's it,never with 2 year old. I'm surprised as they are jumpers, runners & generally rough 🤦🏻‍♀️

newmum1976 · 22/10/2022 09:07

3 kids here and at least 20 times 🥴

blood in nappy/refusal to feed- admitted to be tube fed
Allergic reactions- multiple
croup x 3
bronchiolitis
pneumonia x 3
whooping cough
broken arm
broken toe
crash on bike at velodrome - taken by ambulance
fall in park- surgery to face

Enko · 22/10/2022 09:09

Dd1 once. Suspected appendix
Dd2 twice. One elbow injury. One bad fall that needed stitches
Ds noo idea at least 20 likely more. He plays rugby. We have. Been to check for manu injuries. Age 14 he had a serious kidney problem we went many times then
Dd 3 three times. Once due to an eye issue that required 3 days of hospilisation. Once due to serious fault at school and Once after a serious mental health crisis.

Every time we have been. The staff have been kind and plesant

LynetteScavo · 22/10/2022 09:09

Too many to count! (Urgent care rather than A&E) but then mine are older teens and now adult, so we've had time to build up visits.

DS1 dislocated elbow, finger caught in garage door, bumped head (his head skull is still mishaped from that).
DS2 drank calpol (my friends are shocked and horrified about this one, as they are under the impression I'm a responsible adult) toe squished by electric gate, banged head at school - needed to be glued, sprained ankle, broken thumb, smashed wrist, sprained ankle (surprisingly this was the most painful and we ended up at actual A&E for stronger pain relief).
DD random swelling of eyes, lips and throat. Banged head at school.

A lot of the banged heads were because of the height they'd fallen from, rather than a little bump.

There have also been several bumped head at school incidents and school have advised we go to A&E but we just gone home.

My kids are quite outdoorsy, but they seem to do most damage to themselves in the school environment.

afterdropshock · 22/10/2022 09:09

DC1 once for fever and rash as newborn, once for hives aged 1
DC2 once for breathing difficulties as a newborn
DC3 for bashed face, split head and breathing difficulties all age 1

So we have been 6 times for three children, but they were little then. Not been for years for the DC.

minipie · 22/10/2022 09:09

DD1 - never, as far as I recall 🤞

DD2 - blooming loads. Had bronchiolitis twice as a baby (admitted once), a broken arm, a couple of gashes that needed gluing/taping up, oh and that time I went a bit nuts when she was a baby and convinced myself she was having infantile spasms Blush. Nothing in the past couple of years though 🤞as her physical abilities have caught up with her fearlessness Grin

Craftybodger · 22/10/2022 09:11

We’ve been relatively lucky so far. Total kids ages 28. 1 A&E trip, where they failed to diagnose a broken toe, only found out when they phoned to check 5 weeks later! But the same child has seen the emergency dentist twice.

NCFT0922 · 22/10/2022 09:12

Once for DD 9 who had injured herself during sport
Too many times to count for DS1 who has a very low immune system
never for DS2 who is 3
never for DD2

yikesanotherbooboo · 22/10/2022 09:13

3adult children; three times in total.

Opihr · 22/10/2022 09:13

It varies. I've got 4 and 3 have been in at some point with asthma attacks.

One is particularly accident prone though, and has had more injuries then the other 3 put together. 3 broken arms and 2 glued cuts before leaving primary school 🤦🏻‍♀️

Hiyawotcha · 22/10/2022 09:16

That’s a lot!
dd (now 19 yo) - once aged about 2.5 when she fell and cut her lip badly. Needed gluing.

Ds1 (17 yo) - never A&E, but was whisked through from EmDoc appt when had asthma attack aged 7. 2 nights in hospital.

ds2 (13 yo) - once, aged 18 months when he fell down stairs. Had massive bumps on head. All fine.

so - twice over three children.

Tomatoeplantpants · 22/10/2022 09:16

Oldest once at age 1 with dehydration, admitted for 2 days. Now 19 yrs old.
The youngest probably about ten times, broken bones x3, sprains and head injuries and cardiac issues for the others. She is a walking accident waiting to happen. Never known someone so accident prone. 🤣

Mammyloveswine · 22/10/2022 09:16

Never! And my two are 5 and 7 and very active!

But I've never broken a bone and am very rarely ill do secretly I think we are superheroes like in that film "unbreakable".. but don't tell anyone.

SeemingOKToday · 22/10/2022 09:16

Bloody loads. 3 dc between 14 and 5 and I reckon we must be up to 20 visits + in total.

  • Several head bangs, massive bumps, one concussion
  • Broken collar bone
  • Broken finger
  • 2 x sprained ankles
  • 2 x sprained wrist
  • 1 x serious foot injury (ds3 jumped off a sofa and landed on an upturned plug - it went in. Like, right in 🤢)
  • 2 x febrile convulsions (999)
  • Bronchiolitis at 6 months, oxygen at 85 (999)
  • Suspected appendicitis - recurred twice

Probably many I've forgotten!

Singleandproud · 22/10/2022 09:20

Twice for 13 year old DD. However she is in no way clumsy, she's never even had a graze on her knee or elbow and she plays rugby.

However, I on the other hand was incredibly clumsy and often at A&E, injuries I remember from childhood:
fell off a small wall - unconscious
Ran into my cousin and banged head = unconscious
Trapped fingers in car door x 2
Got foot trapped in old style roundabout and headbutted floor whilst spinning = gravel embedded in face + head injury
Fell over at school = broken arm
Playing Frisbee with brother, hit between the eyes = 2 black eyes (not sure if I went to hospital for that one)

Amazed I've got any brain cells left the number of times I've had head injuries.

Cocoaone · 22/10/2022 09:23

Minor injuries once and proper A&E once - both injuries (bone related) rather than medical issues. DD is 13.

We'd have been much more if I'd followed 111 online advice re: high temps - but I know she has very high temps when ill, it's normal for her.

amylou8 · 22/10/2022 09:23

24 yo - never
22 yo - 3 times (asthmatic)
20 yo - once (by ambulance)
I'm 46 and have only been once when I was pregnant with suspected pre eclampsia which turned out to be a retinal migraine

Goldmember · 22/10/2022 09:24

The first time was last week for either of mine, following advise from 111. DD collapsed in her room and faceplanted the floor. Came around straight away but had quite serious concussion. Didn't know what day it was and constantly repeating the same questions. Very worrying.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 22/10/2022 09:26

13 year old daughter twice. When she was 18 months she bit through her tongue and almost bit is off. Then at age 6 for a high fever that wouldn't go down. But we went to minor injuries for that one.
12 year old daughter once 4 weeks ago. Nosebleed that wouldn't stop. But again minor injuries.

7 year old twice. 12 months old thought she had swallowed a button battery so needed an x-ray. 3 years old ran head first into a pole end of a railing. Huge egg but was still completely non verbal so couldn't tell me if she felt sick so off to A&E.

MajorCarolDanvers · 22/10/2022 09:33

DS 14 - 4 times
DD 10 - once
