How many times have you taken your DC to A&E?

DH think it's ridiculous the number of times we've been. I think it's pretty normal, we have active outdoorsy DC and have often thought we've been quite luck so far.
5 times with DS, now 12 and 3 times with DD (10).

4 children. In total that I can remember, 15 times. 13 injuries, 2 illnesses. From the age of baby to about 10. All are now adults and havent been once. Looking back, I can hand on heart say they were all justified, even the one time it turned out to just be a sprain and not a broken bone. I still needed to have it xrayed to know for certain.

People with high numbers for themselves/their kids - do you look back now and see any that weren't necessary?

Nope. Infact there have probably been times we have waited at home longer than we should have to avoid trips.

Singleandproud · 22/10/2022 11:31

@SavingsThreads no, I think all my injuries required medical attention. However, some like soft tissue damage and sprains could have been treated at a minor injuries clinic but we don't have one near where I live now or where I grew up. Ofcourse it is also difficult to tell between a break and a sprain which would require an Xray anyway and my GP just sent me to A&E when I presented to them with those types of symptoms anyway.

More minor injury departments based in the same hospital as A&E would relieve patient numbers massively I suspect.

DS1 I think twice, once as advised by 111and once sent by GP. Stomach bug at about 6 weeks old, breathing difficulties a bit older but still under one. DS2 never.

NegroniLover · 22/10/2022 11:36

Once & it was a broken arm

MaitlandGirl · 22/10/2022 11:38

DS (26) - twice, once with a cut foot (2yrs) that needed stitches and once with appendicitis (13yrs).

DD1 (24) - once, with a broken wrist (11yrs).

DD2 (21) - 12 times, once with bronchiolitis and was resuscitated (8.5 weeks) 3 times for broken bones (11, 12 and 19yrs), once with a twisted ovarian cyst (earlier this year) and the 8 times with dislocated joints that needed resetting properly. She’s very accident prone!!

SavingsThreads · 22/10/2022 11:38

@ladygindiva it wasn't a barbed question, I tried to tone it as a genuine curiosity.

I myself went to A&E or minor injuries A LOT as a child!

But equally I see lots of threads on here where the OP is told they must go to A&E, only to report back later that they've been sent home, so I was interested. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

mavismorpoth · 22/10/2022 11:39

Never. Mine's not been ill once in her life, she's 6.

MaitlandGirl · 22/10/2022 11:39

ETA - 13 times for DD2, not 12. Can’t add up today.

People with high numbers for themselves/their kids - do you look back now and see any that weren't necessary?

None. One had disabilities that were slow to be diagnosed and the other had a life threatening illness

Loachworks · 22/10/2022 11:44

I think it all depends what you go for.
3 DC.
1 (27) twice sent by GP with asthma attacks.
2 (18) three times with anaphylactic shock (he carries epi pens and you have to go after they're used) and once with a concussion when he fell aged six.
3 (16) once aged five for stitches when she fell on ice.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 22/10/2022 11:46

4 times with DS 1. He's 11 in just under 2 weeks. First time he drank white spot (for fish) solution when DP was cleaning the tank and 111 told us to go. He was fine. Second, third and fourth times were broken wrists. He had broken them each time aged 2, 4 and 9.

DS2 has been twice and he's 8. First time he scalded himself and we had blues and twos. Third degree burns all down his leg and the second time he slipped getting out of the bath and almost bit about a quarter of his tongue off!

Lilbunnyfufu · 22/10/2022 11:47

I think we have been lucky so far not needed to take any of the kids to a&e.
Dd (15)
Ds(5)
Ds ( 11months)
I'm sure at some point the boys will ended up needing to go a&e.

Stickmansmum · 22/10/2022 11:47

4 kids, 10yrs of parenting. 3 times with littlest in 6 months, two split foreheads and a bad dose of tonsillitis (GP made us go).

What's a high number?

Whizzi24 · 22/10/2022 11:52

I am interested by the number of people who say go to urgent care instead. There isn't an urgent care centre in my area. There is a minor injuries unit 10 miles away which I have visited once but is only open weekdays 10am to 6pm.

2pinkginsplease · 22/10/2022 12:00

Never and they are 19&20.

i feel A&E is for vey serious cases eg life threatening, breathing difficulties. I’ve been with dh once as he couldn’t catch a breath, with my mum once as she had a stroke and my sibling numerous times as they have severe mental health issues. Eg suicidal.

anything else, I’d phone for a doctors appointment or possibly go to minor injuries.

MegGriffinshat · 22/10/2022 12:04

Ds twice - fractured his arm at school both times in year 5 &6, and hurt his ankle when he was 16.
DD 8 - once, she got really ill with a nasty bout of chicken pox when she was 5 and stayed 24hours for rehydration.
Youngest DD is 2, she’s been once for a bad bout of croup 111 sent an ambulance which I thought was overkill when we live a 10 min drive away, she stayed in for 12 hours for steroids.

deliverooyoutoo · 22/10/2022 12:04

There's no minor injuries here. What else was I supposed to do with a child who, for example, had a dislocated limb due to EDS?

EndlessMagpies · 22/10/2022 12:07

Twice. Once with rotavirus at 6 months old - she was admitted; and the other time was an x-ray on an injured foot. That didn't pick up the break, but ultimately an MRI scan (paid for privately) did.

Parmesam · 22/10/2022 12:17

Mine was premature so about 3 times before the age of one. Then after that until now...about another four times. She's 16 now.

Newpuppymummy · 22/10/2022 12:18

My eldest daughter is 18 and I’ve taken her three times. My youngest daughter is 17 and have taken her twice

Whereisthehugeteddybear · 22/10/2022 12:23

DC are 13 and 16 but not outdoorsy or sporty. I've been once with one of them.

This is why I'm always a bit surprised at the number of people who feel the need for one person to be sober at all times "in case they need to take DC to hospital"
I mean I'm not a massive drinker but it wouldn't occur to me (when kids were little) that on a Saturday or Sunday evening DH and I would have to choose between us who got to have a glass of wine or 2, in case we needed to take them to hospital. We do now as the older teen has a better social life than we do and needs lifts!😉 (to friends, not hospital!)

Luckycatt · 22/10/2022 12:39

lilaclilypod · 22/10/2022 08:03

11 times with my oldest, he's 3. All illnesses, twice blue lighted from urgent care. He's just that child that gets the worst of everything, he was admitted to hospital with chicken pox!

3 times with my 18m old, all injuries because he's been wild since the second he could walk but never gets ill, ever!

I have one of those too.
I've lost count of the times I've driven to A&E or ambulance called. Allergic reactions, asthma attacks, strange viruses. He can't just have a normal cold.

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 22/10/2022 13:01

It's an Urgent Treatment Centre here, or Minor Injuries where I used to live when the older kids were younger.

DS1 has been twice

DS2 has been once

DS3 has been once

DS4 has been once

DS5 has been four times (he's the clumsy one!)
