How many times have you taken your DC to A&E?

DH think it's ridiculous the number of times we've been. I think it's pretty normal, we have active outdoorsy DC and have often thought we've been quite luck so far.
5 times with DS, now 12 and 3 times with DD (10).

Never and they are 19&20.

i feel A&E is for vey serious cases eg life threatening, breathing difficulties. I’ve been with dh once as he couldn’t catch a breath, with my mum once as she had a stroke and my sibling numerous times as they have severe mental health issues. Eg suicidal.

anything else, I’d phone for a doctors appointment or possibly go to minor injuries.

Last time I

Last time I

Sorry, phone fail. Last time I took one of mine to A&E it was following a doctor's appointment because the GP sent her there.

Minor injuries are open limited hours and don't deal with anything that requires and x-ray. They just send you to A&E. There was a child with a nasty face injury at A&E. There was a long wait so they drove ten miles to the minor injuries unit instead. Two hours later they were back at A&E as minor injuries said the child needed an x-ray. They had to join thr back of the queue again.

For children with burns and broken limbs?

Once with DS now 4 who split his chin open at nursery. He kept dribbling and it was splitting open more and oozing yellow stuff.

HelpMeGetThrough · 22/10/2022 13:15

Eldest who is 20, twice to minor injuries.

Youngest, who is 15, we've lost count, he's a walking/running/bike riding/paddle boarding/footballing accident 🤣

greenacrylicpaint · 22/10/2022 13:31

I live in forrin now and here minor injuries (including broken bones and cuts) are dealt with by the gp practice. very convenient. there is an ooo service in case your own gp is closed.

icebearforpresident · 22/10/2022 13:34

3 times between 2 kids, aged 7 & 9. Both had bumps to the the head. Eldest dropped a toy phone onto her head aged about 18 months (lying on her back playing with it) and was sick a few hours later, youngest was running around the living room, tripped and landed cheek bone first on the edge of the tv unit. Both absolutely fine but youngest had a cracker of a black eye.

My eldest was sent to A&E after seeing the GP, again about age 2. We thought she had a bit of a chesty cough and wanted it checked as it was less than a week before Xmas. Turned out to be Bronchiolitis and her O2 was under 90%. Husband took her up as I was home with her 4 day old sister. Thankfully she got out after a few nights and was home 2 days before Christmas.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 22/10/2022 13:35

Eldest DS never weirdly. Middle DS once but it was a doozie that required surgery. Youngest were preemie twins and spent a fair whack of time getting steroids for croup when small. A dozen visits each maybe. One visit each since they outgrew croup.

FHmama · 22/10/2022 13:37

Probably around 10 times with my 2 year old

People with high numbers for themselves/their kids - do you look back now and see any that weren't necessary?

Almost all of ours we were told to go there by either 111, minor injuries or GP (and on the other two occasions DD literally had her newly-cut front teeth sticking through the outside of her face, or signs of concussion).

In fact on one of the occasions we called the GP to be seen to check out a non-blanching rash, and the GP refused to see us, and told us if we didn’t immediately drive DD to the nearest A&E, he would call an ambulance without our consent, because a child had died of meningitis recently at the practice from not having been sent to A&E early enough. In his words, “we’d rather have a thousand children seen and it turns out to be nothing, than not send them the one time it matters”.

I’m sure there are posters who think that A&E attendances advised by GPs/111 are unnecessary if it turns out that — happily — nothing serious is actually wrong. That’s not how medical professionals see it. And again — a few extra children being seen at A&E is NOT why emergency NHS services are in crisis.

No because if you need an ambulance and they take you in on blue lights I am pretty sure that means she needed to be there. In fact, there were times I didn't call when I should have done.

DinosApple · 22/10/2022 13:57

Three times DD1 (13).
Toddler bump to head (ok).
Once when she wouldn't put weight on one leg after a fall (ok).
When she fell out of a tree (fracture to elbow - got a cast).

Same for DD2 (11).
Once as a 6 week old baby when her eye are swelled up - admitted - IV antibiotics.
Once for a high temperature that wouldn't come down, chest infection.
Once for breathing issues - pneumonia (age 3).

I went to A&E once as a child and, touch wood, never as an adult.

Amiable · 22/10/2022 13:58

As often as I've needed to.

Most of the times I have taken mine they've been sent after seeing the GP.
The other ones were the broken bones.
So no.

LightDrizzle · 22/10/2022 14:08

Once with DD1, now 30 years old. She had orbital cellulitis, a potentially very dangerous condition.

Probably 8 times in 22 years with DD2 who has severe disabilities and a gastrostomy.

Surely it just depends on the child? A friend’s son is adept at falling off and into things and has quite rightly had a few trips to A&E with broken limbs and head bumps, cuts and knocked out teeth.

Halloweenpumpkinfyi · 22/10/2022 14:10

Never with the sporty DS 12 , 3 times with the ds14 .. one to be glued and one turned into emergency op ..the other constipation (oops!)

mondaytosunday · 22/10/2022 14:31

Three times between the two kids. Once my son (3) hurt his wrist and still was holding it hours later so my husband took him, but there was a mix up and after three hours it seemed better and when my husband went up to ask why the delay they said they'd had him marked as already seen to!
Second was my daughter at 14 sprained her ankle at netball so school had me take her. Then at 15 when she'd had a crippling migraine for a month and after three GP visits she was finally in tears so we went. That's it.

healthadvice123 · 22/10/2022 14:44

A lot more than that but mine played rugby and football so few sporting injuries plus also both suffered febrile convulsions when little so often required a & e
But if you have been 100 or once as ling as using it appropriately it doesn't matter

coldfeetmama · 22/10/2022 14:47

I took my local Childrens AE a big tub of celebrations when my youngest got to 16 - I bet they were glad to see the back of us - probably 25 visits across the 4 of them

Stitches , glue , concussion , fractures , tortion 🤢, meningitis, asthma .. I think I had my name above a cubicle 🥳

healthadvice123 · 22/10/2022 14:49

@SavingsThreads no all necessary , head injuries, broken bones , even potential broken bones can only be ruled out with x ray
Convulsions had to be taken in
Use dr or pharmacy if appropriate but never been to A &E and felt a waste of time
Even broken fingers both ds have done this and had to have ops to set them,

healthadvice123 · 22/10/2022 14:52

@2pinkginsplease do drs deal with broken bones then ? Clue is in the name ACCIDENT & emergency

healthadvice123 · 22/10/2022 14:53

@Whizzi24 its called ACCIDENT & emergency
Where would you take a child with broken leg , certainly not your GP or a child with potential concussion

WakingUpDistress · 22/10/2022 14:58

Once for each of them.
They are very outdoorsy, very active and have no sense of danger.

19 and 18 yo nowdays.

DullAndOvercast · 22/10/2022 15:09

All teens One child never, one child once head injury and just glued up in end and other child - now aged fifteen four times - twice requiring an emergency operation and once an x-ray and once further treatment and many follow up appointments.

I don't think there is a normal for any age TBH.

TooGood2BeFalse · 22/10/2022 15:16

Ds1 once when he was 2 after cutting his head and needing stitches.

DS2 x3 once for pneumonia (was very ill), second time for pneumonia (was also very ill) and the 3rd time - because I was scared he had pneumonia. That time it was,in fact, a regular cold.
