What is wrong with the people who think Johnson is the solution?
Are they all suffering short term memory loss?
It would absolutely finish the UK completely as a country of any standing in the world if he came back.

The rest of the world are laughing so hard at us . To think we have fallen to this level .
Awful.

L1ttledrummergirl · 21/10/2022 19:42

I still hope that there is another candidate quietly gathering votes and asking their supporters to stay quiet about it until its time to declare.

There has to be someone half decent?

TomPinch · 21/10/2022 19:42

I agree. I'm absolutely baffled. Johnson. Haven't these people got any idea of the importance of integrity in public office, or at least the appearance of it?

Where have these people sprung from?

The email Johnson campaign is bombarding MPs with this weekend (as well as going to their surgeries with Bring Back B@@@s posters) The use of whom is a tad overdone but more offensive than the grammar the notion that he ‘endured a period of resignation!!’ like it was a suspension

twitter.com/campbellclaret/status/1583531720250634242?s=46&t=vygeO7k51V8O0T6yiZivBg

It's all about the party. I wonder how many MPs are receiving c&p jobs?

DuncinToffee · 21/10/2022 19:59

Tory staffers have been threatening to quit their jobs if Boris Johnson is elected leader, a parly insider tells me

Wonder how many of them were fined for partygate

New - I'm told by senior Conservatives that there are MPs talking about triggering by-elections if Boris Johnson is serious about standing to be leader again. I've heard from MPs tempted to, and gathering evidence of defections and resignations in the event of his return.

Extraordinary piece from @ConHome editor @PaulGoodmanCH on the prospect of a Boris Johnson return. Talks of a “totentanz”- the Conservative Party engaging in a dance of (political) death.

AdamRyan · 21/10/2022 20:21

The only thing that I think will stop the destruction of the conservative party is if they elect a new leader who immediately creates a manifesto and calls a GE to get a mandate. At least that would show they were reading the mood of the country
They are not going to do that though, I think they'll prefer to cling on and hope it blows over in 2 years. Which I can't see how it can do.

They are in a proper pickle.

Roussette · 21/10/2022 20:31

Johnson is ABHORRENT. He has not officially said he is standing, so he is allowing days of infighting and discord so he can test the water and betcha when it becomes apparent he won't reach 100 and someone else will, he will say he wasn't going to stand anyway.
He is sowing division on the country, all for ego stroking.

And then we have Mogg avidly backing him after saying repeatedly a change of leader needs a GE. Self serving nasty nasty man and I agree with a PP, I loathe him.

All of this 👏🏻

Talking to Dh earlier and neither of us could think of anything Johnson stands for on the economy.

Anyone got a clue?

Not a scooby.

IF Johnson became Leader again, the whole government will grind to a standstill because of the Privileges Committee hearings. They will implode

There is actually a serious answer to this.

Compared to other Conservative PMs Johnson is higher-tax and higher spending, particulaly via infrastructure investment. But allocating funds has been chaotic and, of course, covid19 would have prevented a more organised programme if one was in the offing.

jgw1 · 21/10/2022 20:59

If Boris is back does that mean we have more levelling up?

Awful.

Don't worry too much.

I'm in NZ. We went though this in 1990, with Mike Moore being PM for 60 days. Australia went through a period of PM musical chairs too recently.

Insofar that people here think about it al all they hope and expect it will pass.

It probably makes a difference that the EU isn't regarded as the shining city on a hill like it is in other places.

What is different is that I can't think of a single politician here who is as mendacious as Johnson. I've been scratching my head over just how much the UK public will tolerate from him.

tobee · 21/10/2022 21:13

Thank you @TomPinch

TomPinch · 21/10/2022 21:13

jgw1 · 21/10/2022 20:59

I guess so.

It seems logical that Johnson would simply revert to his manifesto commitments of 2019 and that does mean levelling up etc.

The problem is that post-covid the UK government has an enormous budget deficit so either a) taxes need to go up b) spending must fall or c) the government goes further into debt.

Truss tried c) and b) won't allow for levelling up. Sunak was angling for a) with his tax increases that Truss scrapped.

Elodie09 · 21/10/2022 21:20

They are a measure of how unstable everything is

So all those Tory MPs who voted for fracking a few days ago, are not going back to the manifesto committment not to allow it. That'll be fun.

I'd like to say it would be hard to level down any lower, but it feels as though they've moved from a shovel to a digger.

When's Boris' first dressing up act with a hard hat of his new campaign going to be?

It's a like we've all been in a deep spell of sleep for the last few weeks and have woken up a lot poorer. Oh and the worst ever hangover.

I think that's ultimately going to be their downfall though...

Even tory voters - except the very rich/independently wealthy - are now being adversely affected by tory policies.

It must be very worrying right now if you are coming to the end of your mortgage fixed rate and or your energy fixed rate. Add to that the increase in food prices etc

Went to ikea today - the price rises there are huge...80%.
