Car crash Liz Truss BBC interview tonight

Did anybody see it?
It was really cringe-worthy

She said 'deliver' about 230 times and blinked about 200 times a minute

She also said she's staying and is planning on leading the Tories into the next election! 😱

After this interview I have shelved the pity I was feeling for her. If I had done what she has I'd be leaving the country, changing my name and considering plastic surgery. She's certainly got a brass neck!

They must know she’s not up to it so why?

They knew she’d do as she’s told. They gave her enough rope to hang herself and now they’re pulling her strings.

Dogtooth · 18/10/2022 09:38

@elvedon beat me to it!

I heard that when Penny Mordaunt announced LT was detained on urgent business elsewhere what that meant was that Graham Brady, Chair of the 1922 Committee, had gone to see her. If true, it's amazing that things have got so bad in the Tory Party that LT puts a meeting with him ahead of going into the HoC on a day like yesterday. This tweet made me laugh (it's laugh or cry at the moment).

That's not correct. She was not with Graham Brady as he was in the chamber when Liz Truss was absent.

I still can't believe she's actually PM. Every time i see her I have a split secknd of wondering why she is there before I remember.

Yes! It’s so weird. Not only does she come across as incompetent, and completely out of place, but she’s also surrounded by colleagues who also clearly think she’s incompetent and are trying to mop up the mess while she just sits there. They can’t make that work.

I'm getting a bit fed up of the rhetoric being peddled across social media that LT is having some sort of mental health episode/breakdown. In part because it feels to me like it comes tinged with misogyny - poor little woman messed it up and but don't worry, just pop her in the corner to cry while the men come in and sort it.

I don't feel sorry for her one bit. She quite literally asked for this, and ploughed on despite all the warnings of what was going to happen. She and everyone in the party that voted for her should be ashamed at how much they've managed to fuck up in such a short space of time, not to mention how she's probably set women in politics back about 50 years.

She's going to slip out the back door, isn't she?
She'll wash up on a caravan site in Wales. Her and Coffey drinking cider and shouting at passing cars.

I like this comment in the Telegraph Sketch.

www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2022/10/17/zombie-trusss-cameo-hunt-penny-show-revealed-really-running/

Labour asked a question: “What the Hell is going on?” The person it was addressed to was Liz Truss, still the official face of the regime. Yet at 3.30pm, it wasn’t her at the despatch box, but Penny Mordaunt. “I’m afraid you’ll have to do with me,” she joked.
In fact, she gave one of the most impressive performances I’ve seen under pressure – like watching a drowning woman conduct Brahms – listing Labour’s own U-turns to chorus of cheers from the Tory benches.

ThatCheeseIsMine · 18/10/2022 09:45

MsTSwift I wasn’t doubting it!

Benjispruce4 · 18/10/2022 09:45

I though Penny M was arrogant and patronising, as though it was complete normal for the PM to be hiding away.

SerendipityJane · 18/10/2022 09:47

I can't help but remember Dr. Johnsons comment on women preaching

I entirely agree. She isn't some lost lamb catapulted against her will into No 10. She was fully complicit in creating this nightmare and the fact she is totally inadequate for the job she wanted and devised a disastrous budget is on her. She chose it.

I'll reserve my sympathy for the rest of us who will have to live through the fall out.

yes this aspect pisses me off. It’s not because she’s a woman that she’s fucked up. I’m just glad she’s not the first or that would be the whole narrative.

pompomdaisy · 18/10/2022 09:51

Oh jees I hope she doesn't wash up back in Leeds! That's all we need!

ThatCheeseIsMine · 18/10/2022 09:52

At the cost of wrecking the economy and possibly also the Tory party? I don’t doubt there are dodgy powers at work but I’d be surprised if this is all going to plan.

but I’m still sorry for her just on an immediate personal level because of the sheer embarrassment. I’m an introvert and find performing/being the centre of attention excruciating, so just watching her makes me curl up and die inside.

That will be the same Telegraph that called this "the best budget [they] had heard a British chancellor deliver by a massive margin"

The telegraph, the Mail, the times have become propaganda papers for the wealthy tax-avoiding billionaire classes and they're comments have to be seen as such. They're deeply implicated in this mess and we need to wake up to what their real agenda is.

I don’t think anyone has even suggested it’s because she’s a woman. It’s because she’s a useless oxygen thief.

I used to vote Tory. I met her and can't stand her. She genuinely doesn't care about people at all. I think she prefers ideas and principles to reality and people.

Society.
There is no such thing as society.

Margaret Thatcher.

Truss is like a Thatcher Lite.

vera99 · 18/10/2022 09:56

Right across the Tory media spectrum today is a sense of more in sorrow than in anger and a mourning that the party they love and support is in it's death throes. Very little if anything of remorse for what they have brought down on the country and our people. Party before Nation.

ScotsLassie322 · 18/10/2022 09:58

lannistunut · 18/10/2022 06:54

I don't think she is a typical politician at all. We have middle ground politicians - they come from right and left - who are economically orthodox. Then we have fringe left, who deny economic reality. Then we have a bigger group who are fringe right, which includes Truss, who also ignore economic reality.

A normal politician could never have done what Truss did. We desperately need to get back to orthodox politics. Brexit was unorthodox, although it was popular it was always going to cause depend long term economic damage. Theresa May was orthodox which is why she said 'Brexit means Brexit' which sounded like a riddle but was actually just a statement of reality.

Right wing freak economics is more dangerous than left wing freak economics - because it has more advocates and vested interests are pushing it harder, so it gets more traction currently. Corbyn was opposed by most of the media - Truss' nonsense is just as dangerous but supported by the media at first.

No, there's absolutely no humanity there. Most Tories are wealthy people who work to keep the wealth for themselves and others but she really takes it to the extreme. She has NO idea how to run the country but also cares less than Boris does about the less well off.

She seems to think that having those on an average use paying £2500 a year to have warmth / electricity whilst her former employer (BP) make enormous profits Mother Theresa like.

Brown may or may not have made decisions that were not ideal in hindsight.

and of course he has an ego

byt I don’t think anyone can really doubt he was driven by public service and at the end of the day wanted to improve society.

Cameron had some notion of social good even though it was very very compromised. But after that? Pure corrupt greed.

it’s just been a steady decline in morals and decency in the leadership of this country under the conservatives.

the fact that she won’t resign is appalling.

and yes she is doped up to her eyeballs. Immoral way to govern.

Agree. I've worked in public sector for 20 odd years now, and under Labour we got stuff done and delivered projects that actually benefited people. Real, ordinary people in deprived parts of the the community. We had actual government policies that weren't written in the style of a propaganda piece. We had funding streams we could understand, and we didn't spend months and months scrabbling around developing funding bids for government 'competitions' to then have them withdrawn at the 11th hour.

We need a General Election, and the likelihood is we will not get one as, if the polls are to be believed, the conservatives would be almost wiped out.

Croque · 18/10/2022 10:00

Apparently, she was openly laughing about Javid as being "a shit" when choosing her new chancellor a few days ago. That does not sound like the attitude of a remorseful PM. She has nothing in common with Thatcher that I can see. They were both married to beta males but as far as I know, Thatcher was very loyal to Dennis and upheld her Christian values until the end. Truss is vapid and nasty.

Blossomtoes · 18/10/2022 10:01

I thought she worked for Shell? You know, that Shell whose CEO is utterly bewildered that it’s not be taxed more heavily.

@donquixotedelamancha

You think what Brown did with the gold reserves was competent?

Don't remember it causing a market crash on the pound and the Bank of England spending billions to prop up pensions collapse, do you?

vera99 · 18/10/2022 10:02

There's a school of thought (a comment on Twitter !) that maybe the patriarchal Tory party will keep her for PMQs and use the subsequent humiliation as leverage.
