Car crash Liz Truss BBC interview tonight

GreenLunchBox · 17/10/2022 23:50

Did anybody see it?
It was really cringe-worthy

She said 'deliver' about 230 times and blinked about 200 times a minute

She also said she's staying and is planning on leading the Tories into the next election! 😱

After this interview I have shelved the pity I was feeling for her. If I had done what she has I'd be leaving the country, changing my name and considering plastic surgery. She's certainly got a brass neck!

I watch a lot of "Faking It" on Quest RED and excessive blinking in an interview is a sign of severe anxiety, often caused by being asked questions you don't want to answer.

I was wondering why we are having an "All our yesterdays" moment while Rome is buring.

Brilliant!

Robert Peston
Liz Truss tells the broadcasting pool tonight: “I recognise we have made mistakes. I’m sorry for those mistakes. But I’ve fixed the mistakes. I’ve appointed a new chancellor. We have restored economic stability and fiscal discipline”. All sorted, by her. In case you wondered

@MyrtlethePurpleTurtle benign that the tax payer is making contributions of c.25% of public sector wages into DB schemes to prop them up, and public sector workers are having to also pay c.8-10% of their wages into them in addition? That pensioners are having to be topped up with pension credits because pension schemes have never been able to recover? That many, many people in occupational schemes can’t afford to pay in the level of contributions needed to provide a decent level of pension in retirement and our pension schemes are based on highly leveraged, complex schemes because they offloaded equities due to the impact of the tax grab? Gosh.

Remind me what the Tories have done over the past 12 years to reverse those effects?

Benjispruce4 · 18/10/2022 09:05

She sounds spaced out. She has to go as she no longer has any credibility whatsoever.

peridito · 18/10/2022 09:08

I've not previously given much thought to political advisors but looking up the Tufton Street ref made by @Dogtooth and reading this
bylinetimes.com/2022/10/04/the-tentacles-of-tufton-street-think-tank-alumni-handed-top-government-roles/
has given me huge pause for thought.

What the fuck was all that blinking? It was such a weird combo- looking like she was holding back tears while sounding like a robot.

Anyone read morse code ?

I still can't believe she's actually PM. Every time i see her I have a split secknd of wondering why she is there before I remember.
Those scenes in the HoC yesterday were beyond bizarre.

Eeyoresbreakfast707 · 18/10/2022 09:17

I don't know the mechanism by which you start the process, but we need a general election, this government doesn't have a mandate to lead.

Also, let's stop party members electing leaders. It only leads to extremism on both sides eg Liz Truss and Jeremy Corbyn.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 18/10/2022 09:22

The main thing I took away from the interview is that she is sorry she got caught, not sorry for what she did She apologised for going too far too fast. That's it. So back to the sneaky, sneaky methods of creaming off the wealth of the nation instead of the blatant grab.

ThatCheeseIsMine · 18/10/2022 09:22

I agree she seems really spaced out - whether pharmacologically or just from stress and anxiety, maybe lack of sleep, all of these would be understandable. But there’s a huge lack of engagement and “presence” - I just see someone struggling to remember the script and trying to do fake mateyness. With Chris mason who’s having none of it.

as soon as I saw the headline “i’m leading the Tories into the next election says Truss” I was sure she was doomed - has she learnt nothing from Kwarteng “i’m going nowhere” days earlier!

the mystery is how the hell she got through the selection process - the membership chose her over rishi but the mps put her in the final two. They must know she’s not up to it so why?

MsTSwift · 18/10/2022 09:25

It’s the Arthur dent theory those that seek power are the least suitable to have it. My Dh would have this sorted out by the end of the month.

She is living my worst nightmare though. Literally a nightmare! Cringe!

Benjispruce4 · 18/10/2022 09:26

I don’t think she expected to get the PM position and just threw her hat in the ring out of some career progression pressure(internal or external) and is grossly out of her depth.

ThatCheeseIsMine · 18/10/2022 09:26

Yes! It’s so weird. Not only does she come across as incompetent, and completely out of place, but she’s also surrounded by colleagues who also clearly think she’s incompetent and are trying to mop up the mess while she just sits there. They can’t make that work.

Anydaynowonewouldhope · 18/10/2022 09:29

The people I feel sorriest for are the people who used to work on projects with her at shell whos heads are currently exploding at the fact that she is now PM but couldn’t manage to organise a full team meeting in a whole year

I heard that when Penny Mordaunt announced LT was detained on urgent business elsewhere what that meant was that Graham Brady, Chair of the 1922 Committee, had gone to see her. If true, it's amazing that things have got so bad in the Tory Party that LT puts a meeting with him ahead of going into the HoC on a day like yesterday. This tweet made me laugh (it's laugh or cry at the moment).

That's a lie.

Graham Brady was in the HoC listening to Penny give excuses for Liz the Lettuce.

ThatCheeseIsMine · 18/10/2022 09:32

My Dh would have this sorted out by the end of the month. Grin

And agree about the nightmare! Literally being responsible for everything with everyone watching and not having a clue. Despite everything I actually still feel a bit sorry for her because of this. But she seriously needs to resign everything and disappear to a remote island and become a hermit (at least that’s what I’d do)

See also Boris and basically every other politician...they're only sorry when they get caught - for themselves for getting caught.

@donquixotedelamancha

You think what Brown did with the gold reserves was competent?

hindsight is a wonderful thing. I now regret buying a lottery ticket last week as I it turns out I didn't win. GB can't be blamed for not predicting the future- as in future gold prices- but Truss was literally told to her face throughout the summer what the effect of her plans would be, and then didn't even bother to ask the OBR for their modelling.

She is sorry we feel that way.

He bloody would! He’s low key super intelligent and calls everything right. Yes it’s annoying! I imagine there are many like him but they don’t go into politics - this shower do!

@peridito you might find this interesting too

I can understand some people might have reservations about George Monbiot but Peter Oborne is hardly a crazy leftist. If I was a conservative, I'd be hopping mad about what's happened to the party.
