@limitededitionbarbie - I don't mind. I'm thinking aloud for myself as much as you, as I came to this quite late in life (I'm in my forties and found this path only a few years ago, having previously been Christian/High Anglican). The realization has come as something of a surprise: this board tonight is the first time I've ever articulated those four words 'I am a witch', but in some profound sense, I know this has always been my particular form of spirituality.
My interest started simply from my reading (and of an affinity with nature, as of childhood). Since encountering Homer/Ovid I've been fascinated by the Greek/Roman gods, then developed a strong interest in Pantheism, and read the work of philosophers and early twentieth-century mystics (Evelyn Underhill, and C G Jung on symbolism). Even the idea of the four elements is Aristotelean, so philosophers have been interested in this stuff for a very long time, albeit it's been couched in different terms than paganism. Eastern mysticism is currently everywhere in the West, ie. new age and mindfulness.
My transition/awakening was slow. I'm very much solitary: I have no circles or contacts, just a couple of friends I know too to have pagan leanings. I'm not sure if you can 'train', so to speak, but there are a lot of books around on neopagan traditions and individuals are always encouraged to carve out a path that's unique to them.
It's brought me a great deal of peace and healing. I wish you joy in whatever path you choose!
