What are your recurring dreams about?

I have a few. They are never nice ones and I've been having them for years, probably every couple of months.

The one I hate the most is where I've forgotten I have pets after leaving them alone for months locked up in the house. For some reason I'm living somewhere else. Sometimes it's cats and other times it's dogs and the dread of going back to the house where they have more than likely starved to death is awful.

Another I have is living in a country that's at war. I hear the planes flying over and its just terrifying.

Do you have any recurring dreams?

I have the dream that I’ve forgotten about pets too.

another one that I have is that I can swim through the air. Absolutely bizarre!

Borgonzola · 15/10/2022 21:39

When I was with an ex I also dreamt recurrently of snakes. I should have taken it on board Hmm

OhForCodsHake · 15/10/2022 21:41

Trying to put my contact lenses in, only to find they have expanded to become about ten times their normal size and are completely impossible to get on my eyeballs.

Teeth falling out.

Finding a long hair growing out of my tongue.

Being lost at a dream version of my old secondary school.

Bouncing and discovering I can keep myself up in the air by "sculling" with my hands.

dreamland5 · 15/10/2022 21:45

Mine is horrible.
It's a recurring nightmare I've had for years where I am attacked by a group of men - usually about 3-5 men.
I'm either being chased or I'm about to walk into a situation where I know it's going to happen but there's nothing I can do to stop it.

I can't turn around and walk away, I walk into the situation. It's horrible.
I usually wake up the second they're about to attack me. I can never sleep afterwards. I wake up scared and shaken.
It's really awful.

Sometimes when I wake up, I'll have to make a cup of tea, listen to an audiobook etc to try and take my mind off it and it's usually 3 hours or more before I can go back to sleep.

My dad was very disabled after losing a leg at the age of 9 years and he said he used to dream he was running/sprinting fluidly and easily with 2 legs very regularly. Sad

I always dream I find another room in my house and think of what I'm going to put in there. The house is always familiar in my dream but it's not the house I live in now, it kind of just represents it. I looked it up and apparently it means I think I have unfulfilled potential which makes sense.

Same- it's always another kitchen and utility or another house altogether and I'm comfortable there and excited to be there. I'm contemplating a new job so...

Spikes? In what way?

Just piles of spikes. Usually when I'm feeling physical pain.

I have a book and there's some explanation, so I did some screenshots for anyone who's interested.

Thank you
Can you screenshot what it says after the abandonment of animals bit? I'm wondering if that's what I should look at for my dream where I forget I have pets.

I am sitting on the edge of a quay, my legs dangling over the side. It is twilight and foggy. There is a huge ship looming over me.

In my other reoccurring dream I’m walking in the rain (twilight again). I pass many houses, their lights are all blazing, but I know that the houses are completely empty.

Lollypop701 · 15/10/2022 22:22

I’m I. A city and desperately need a loo, I eventually find one. Once I’m sat down the walls become see though and everyone can see me . Oh the joys of the sleeping mind!

Sunnytwobridges · 15/10/2022 22:39

Dreaming of my reuniting with my first love. It’s very disheartening when I wake up and it’s not real.

Mercy1968 · 15/10/2022 23:25

One where I m in my car driving along a road to a nearby town and I always miss the turn and end up driving through a road flooded with sea water. I have started to be able to recognise where I go wrong and tell myself this is just that dream again.

The toilet one in various ways. They are always locked or dirty or down vast corridors. I have this dream when I do actually need the toilet in real life but have put it off and gone back to sleep.

Most recurring dream is I m either really late for work or just don't go in or call them and when I go back days later I have been sacked and go to my classroom to find someone else has my job and my lanyard pass won't work.

I work at my old secondary school so I sometimes have dreams where I m 18 again and haven't revised or gone to classes for ages and the A levels are the next day. I always feel strange the next day walking past the exam hall at work.

Ladyofthepeonies · 15/10/2022 23:28

I regularly stream of a house we are forced to live in and hate it it’s seriously creepy, but if it was real like it would be amazing it’s at
least double the size of our house and many more bathrooms

Frith2013 · 15/10/2022 23:32

I have 2 with many variations of those.

  1. I have got back together with my ex husband. He, our children and everyone else is very pleased. I am filled with apprehension. Towards the end of the dream, he says something awful or just gives me the "look" and I know he is still dangerous and getting back together is a mistake. (I left him 18 years ago!)

  2. A very recent one. I dream of where I volunteer and talking to someone there that I have a crush on. This is quite depressing when I wake up because he's never shown any interest in me in real life!

Heya Ofwarren,

"The one I hate the most is where I've forgotten I have pets after leaving them alone for months locked up in the house. For some reason I'm living somewhere else. Pets often refer to our instinctual / natural selves - cats in particular refer to the feminine / creative .... the rest would then be fairly self-explanatory.... Living at a distance and not nurturing those parts of yourself - ps: a house often refers to our lives / the container in which our lives unfold as a whole X

fungibletoken · 16/10/2022 00:22

I have an exam the next day and I don't know the material well enough. Doesn't matter how many times I have the same dream, and now just how long it was since I last did any form of exam - always really long, realistic and stressful!

WhyDoesItAlways · 16/10/2022 08:46

Tidal wave/tsunami for me. I'm usually on a beach with a big rock face behind that has steps running up it that I need to climb to escape the wave. Or I'm running across sand dunes and can see the waves getting bigger and closer. I've always woken up before the wave has been able to catch me though.

Also the toilet one and then I wake up really needing the toilet.

Livingonjuice · 16/10/2022 08:49

XenoBitch · 15/10/2022 19:05

My teeth falling out. It starts with a loose one, then the rest follow. If it is not teeth, it is my mouth feeling full of gunk that I keep pulling out.

I mostly lucid dream so am aware I am dreaming and can control the direction of dreams to a point... but it gets fucking ruined when I am talking to some dream NCP and my mouth fills up with stuff.

Another one is needing the loo, and never finding a suitable toilet.

Both of these. My teeth just break and my mouth is full of them. And the loo thing. Doors don't close or they're filthy. Horrid

ShowOfHands · 16/10/2022 09:41

I dream about my legs not working as well. The more I try to walk, the more leaden they become. I also dream about flying. It's easy. You just jump and scull.

I dream vividly all the time and don't think they mean anything. I dream all sorts and they're entirely unrelated to real life. I have anxiety dreams when happy and brilliant dreams when sad and a whole lot in between. I don't even need the loo when dreaming about toilets. It all seems entirely random.

We don't remotely understand dreams at all, even why we have them in the first place, let alone whether they mean anything.

Oh wow, thank you for this. It's extremely interesting

Haven’t read all the replies yet but I see a PP has mentioned about tidal waves, which is one I have too. Not that often, but I always take it quite literally to mean that I’m feeling overwhelmed.

The one I have most often is about public toilets. It will be a huge room of cubicles but I can’t find one that’s suitable to use. They’re either occupied or filthy or broken or there is no door, and I become increasingly panicked at not being able to find a toilet I can use. This one I assume is just an anxiety dream. I am an anxious person generally and had some issues as a child relating to toileting which had some long term psychological effects.

MistyRock · 16/10/2022 09:50

I've also heard that the pet one refers to forgetting/putting off something you need to focus on and solve. For me I believe its to do with things I need to sort out. Tie up lose ends and move on. So long as I keep sweeping it under the carpet it will always rear its ugly head.
My car brakes dream I think is to do with me moving alot, my anxiety gets the better of me and my subconscious wants to put the brakes in and I can't.

waterlego · 16/10/2022 09:50

I see now that others have mentioned the toilet one. Glad it’s not just me!
