A shame that The Last Leg is between series right now, Adam Hills is usually good for a political based rant!

Notcontent · 14/10/2022 14:34

Johnson wasn’t great at sticking to the truth and made things up as he went along - but Truss is worse as her ideology is so far to the right.

@LadyApplejack - both Johnson and Truss have the same flaw. They think they can act quickly and just bang the table like a tin pot dictator. The pandemic hid the issues but a lot of what is coming out now is old Johnson policy which was never advanced due to the pandemic.

Both are rubbish. Johnson had charisma. But a total loser as a leader like Truss

I agree they are more alike than most people realise.

Neither of them give a shit about anyone but themselves.

LadyApplejack · 14/10/2022 14:39

@LexMitior I don't agree with the characterization "bang the table like a tin-pot dictator". Johnson got in with an 80-seat majority. Truss is doing what she SAID she'd do. To my mind the dictating is coming from Tory MPs who don't like them, so conspire to undermine and remove.

I don't count on Starmer, Rayner and co coming in and showing us all what good leadership is but if they do get elected next, I hope they are given fair crack at it.

watcherintherye · 14/10/2022 14:43

Why was KK sacked, if the only change Truss has made is to the Corporation Tax cut? She says that the vision hasn’t changed, and that was a vision shared by her and KK, apparently, so no great difference of opinion or policy. It’s not as though the Chancellor went rogue! I don’t really understand the logic.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 14/10/2022 14:43

Liz didn't hang around very long at the press conference!!

caroleanboneparte · 14/10/2022 14:45

That press conference was a non event!

waffless · 14/10/2022 14:46

Yes, she did not take lots of questions but she was asked the same questions three times.

LexMitior · 14/10/2022 14:46

@LadyApplejack Ah, I mean not in the sense of them not being elected, but in the sense that neither of them pursue any of aims with the kind of finesse a skilled politician would.

Both Johnson and Truss fail to see that you need proper alliances to achieve your political aims. Just saying "do it" is not enough. This is why they both failed as PM. If Blair had done the same, ie Thatcher, they would have failed. But they knew better.

If I was a Tory voter I would be looking for someone who had a record of delivery. Johnson was a polemical journalist and Truss a press wonk. Neither of them had ever delivered a substantial project that required leadership before politics.

LemonSwan · 14/10/2022 14:48

Farcical. They both need to go.

can we have boris and rishi back please.

I agree that both Boris and Truss did, and are doing exactly what they said they would. The problem is that the Tory MPs now look at their voters back in their constituencies and think - shit, they don't like what the government are doing, I'm not going to be re-elected. At least Boris had a mandate - Truss doesn't, and she absolutely deserves to go down in flames if she so significantly changes the party policies on which her party was last elected.

I've written to my (Tory) MP on this myself to express my fury so maybe he's one of those sharpening the knives.

It's really a general election that's needed though before anyone can claim a mandate.

(Also please can we avoid gendered insults about Truss - she's doing things you may disagree with but that's not because she's female so calling her a bitch is not on.)

LadyApplejack · 14/10/2022 14:53

@LexMitior I do see your logic in terms of playing the game/achieving aims within parliament. I guess what I'm saying is, how can someone be voted in with a majority as strong as we'll probably ever see, and be ousted in the first place. In hindsight there should have been a GE, if anything. The situation now sure isn't democratic or helpful.

I am a Thatcher fan so we probably come from different place as regards good leadership qualities! But out of interest who would you want to see take charge now?

Dave20 · 14/10/2022 14:55

It’s too late for people like me. Mortgage deals coming to and end and in a deal which is double than what I currently paying.
Many peoples dreams of buying their first homes have been wiped away by one speech.

Do not underestimate how damaging this is. Many home purchases have already fallen through as people can’t get mortgages.

I had nothing to do with them not liking him. It had to do with him being absolutely shite and a total liability. It's not Mean Girls.

Just because Truss is also shite, but without the winning personality*, doesn't mean Johnson should be rehabilitated as some kind of poor, bullied innocent who was just trying to do his best. He was terrible, and he is the reason there's no-one decent left to choose from.

You do realise we live in a parliamentary democracy don;t you?

LexMitior · 14/10/2022 15:05

@LadyApplejack - leadership has a few variables but I don't think it's a left right thing. Thatcher, for example was a quality leader. Did I like her no but she had impressive leadership qualities.

That cannot be said for Johnson, who lead only in the sense he rushed to the front of a crowd and claimed to lead it from there. Rubbish. Gets you elected though.

The truth is that the best leaders are not in politics mostly. The quality has declined.

Tories - Gove would do some good repair. Sunak actually made bad decisions as Chancellor.

Labour - Kier Starmer is still acting like he is head of the CPS. Wes Streeting is my top tip for Labour.

LexMitior · 14/10/2022 15:09

@TheLeadbetterLife - yes you can track it back to Johnson because so many good MPs packed up and left or were forced out as leader. This left a collection of nervous jellies who supported and then, perversely did Johnson in. He treated them like cannon fodder because he assessed they owed him everything due to his charisma.

He got rid of any serious competition. I remember looking at him at an event just after he'd resigned as Foreign Sec and thinking how low grade his people were then. But they became the Cabinet!!!

There might be a chance that those mortgage rates will fall back, now they've reversed some of it. Hope so.

TheLeadbetterLife · 14/10/2022 15:13

Also @LadyApplejack "a majority as strong as we'll ever see"?

I think Blair might want a word.

Nope, inflation still out of control, rates are going no where in the short term

Novum · 14/10/2022 15:27

I wonder how Kwarteng feels about being the sacrifice to save Truss's worthless skin? If she has yet another enemy on the back benches it's going to be even more of a bumpy ride for her.

StPaulandTheBrokenBones · 14/10/2022 15:28

Hang on, weren't these economic policies hers? She and KK did exactly what they said they were going to do and now he has been sacked? What about her? Why has she not fucked off as well? Do these politicians think we cannot remember what they said only a few short weeks ago?
