Starting this at 980 on the other thread because it's late and I might miss the tipping point. We're moving fast at the moment, thanks all for the analysis, insight and company

Good find @MagicFox Worth I think posting this at the start of each sequential thread. A bit like the "Listen up everybody.." on the Relationship board. Because it really is important to understand not the immediate events that are occurring right now, but what this stone in the water does by way of its ripples. What can we learn.

Those states that lose wars tend to win in other ways later, accidentally or otherwise. But in the case of Russia will it eventually make use of its vast natural resources in positive ways (a revolution) or will it properly tool up its military this time to avenge a grievance? Where does the US spread its influence and protection in the future- to the Pacific and to South America? These areas cover 60% of the globe, but probably yes. How does China look after its ageing population? It cannot send its men into war - that is terribly inefficient. Will China consolidate its tech manufacturing as the best means of gaining know how in this digital age. China pirates products and is it a testament to the US that this still remains the best China can do?

The fact I am even considering these future events, so soon after the start of this war is striking in itself.

Thanks @MagicFox , still following even though I rarely have chance to post. Great level headed contributions.

miceonabranch · 11/10/2022 22:35

Does anybody know where Russia gets their arms from? Apparently they're running low and I'd like to think they can't re stock.

MagicFox · 11/10/2022 22:36

Iran. And the 1940s.

They also produce a lot of their weapons themselves, but that will be very much reduced now due to sanctions.

miceonabranch · 11/10/2022 22:43

I hope they run out then.

Onceuponatimeinalandfaraway · 11/10/2022 22:48

I have what it probably a really silly question or two or I cold probably go to loads with my lack of history knowledge 😂 .

I heard someone say earlier on LBC that if putin used nukes America/nato would go in and assassinate him.
if that is true and possible why can we not do that now? Then his successor could stop the stupid war and say something about how insane putting was and so many young Russians shouldn’t have lost life etc. I now wishful thinking but seriously why is taking Putin out not an option for nato/the west?

Silly question number two, how did we get Germany/its allies to drop weapons and stop fighting and how did we make hitler retreat to his bunker where he killed himself rather than face trail by the world? I know the nuclear bombs in Japan contributed but was it only the fear of more of them that stopped all those fighting on that side?

Thanks for the new thread
Can't believe how quickly the last one filled up

TokyoSushi · 11/10/2022 22:53

Checking in, thank you!

minsmum · 11/10/2022 23:15

@Onceuponatimeinalandfaraway I am not particularly clever about these things however taking out of assassination of a head of state is never a good idea. The removal of Putin is a matter for the Russian people. Forced regimes change never works well. We are democracies, we are not supposed to work like that also we don't know that the person who would come to power after Putin would be any better. As the saying goes nature abhors a vacuum. We also don't need to unite the Russians against the West and behind the next strong man who comes along. That is what happened in Germany after the First World War and look what happened.

We made Hitler retreat to his bunker by defeating his armies, chasing them back to Berlin and surrounding it so that his only option was to surrender

The nuclear bombs were dropped to shorten the war against Japan, Germany had already surrendered by then.

I am sure someone much more knowledgeable will give a better more comprehensive answer than me nuts that's my understanding

minsmum · 11/10/2022 23:16

Sorry for my bad typing
