Do you remember floating down the stairs as a child?

Last night my eldest DC (17) asked if I had any memories of floating down the stairs as a child. I do. Very vivid memories that I've never mentioned to anyone else. I don't know how old I was at the time, but we left that particular property (the memory is still clear in my mind's eye) when I was seven, so presumably it was prior to that.

DC also has their own memories of them floating down the stairs when they were young.

A quick Google suggests it's a common phenomenon, but it isn't something I'd come across before.

Obviously I can't possibly have floated down the stairs and it was probably a dream, but why on Earth do people remember that particular dream? It makes me doubt the reliability of my memory.

There was a thread about this on here recently!

Yes - I weirdly remember the floating thing.

FartOutLoudDay · 11/10/2022 12:41

Yes, and of jumping down them from several stairs up which is also very unlikely!

Anjelika · 11/10/2022 12:45

I remember this too! Interesting that it is such a common phenomenon.

There was a huge post about this on here recently and apparently it's very common.

BertaHoon · 11/10/2022 12:48

We had this 2 weeks ago.

I don't. But I'd always dream I'd fallen down the stairs then wake up to find I'd fallen out of bed.

AnApparitionQuipped · 11/10/2022 12:49

No. I remember falling down the stairs, but I certainly didn't float; went head over heels and bruised everything.

Avenueofcherryblossom · 11/10/2022 12:52

Yes I remember this very clearly. I thought it was just me!

poshme · 11/10/2022 12:57

@FartOutLoudDay I used to do that with my brother. We'd take it in turns to go higher and higher and jump off- seeing how high we could go and still jump.

Used to drive my mum crazy. She was sure we'd break limbs. Never did.

I apologise for a repeat thread. I'm here daily and missed it, so perhaps others did too.

It sends shivers down my spine.

No, i find this fascinating though. I wonder why there is such a collective of people with the same recollection/dream. Bizarre!

REP22 · 11/10/2022 13:02

Yes! I did, very very vividly. It's interesting to hear it's fairly common. I thought it was just me!

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/10/2022 13:02

Yes! Or rather flying, with my arms out wide like in Peter Pan. The door would open as I reached it and I’d go up into the stars.

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 11/10/2022 13:06

Good grief! This is so weird! I used to jump down 7 steps at a time when I was little. It was an old tenement building with big steps. It was like controlled floating. It felt like I had superpowers. My friend used to jump too. When I got older and looked at the height I’d jumped it just couldn’t have been possible without injury. Brains are weird😆

GlumyGloomer · 11/10/2022 13:07

My guess is it's an inaccurate memory of being carried down stairs. When I carry my youngest down stairs she's not looking at me, or holding on tight in case I drop her. She's just looking around and enjoying the ride.

35965a · 11/10/2022 13:07

Probably remembering being carried as a baby or small child.

GlumyGloomer · 11/10/2022 13:08

Ha, cross post

lurkingfromhome · 11/10/2022 13:11

Not exactly floating, but holding on to the banister with one hand and launching myself off. It felt like jumping in slow motion. Must have jumped down at least 7 or 8 steps and landed at the bottom without even a twisted ankle. If I did that now I'd break a hip...

Fiddledeedeeee · 11/10/2022 13:11

I still have this dream now occasionally! It’s definitely a dream for me and always has been.

meow1989 · 11/10/2022 13:14

Yes and flying dreams are some of my favourite even now!

drum123 · 11/10/2022 13:18

My grandsons compete with each other to see who can jump from the highest stair. So far 7 is the winner - but there are LOADS of cushions and blankets at the bottom, and they do hold onto the banister so they can launch themselves off more safely.
I've been certain for years that I could jump from the top stair when I was young, and I still think I can run down the whole flight really, really quickly, just brushing the stairs with my tiptoes. Obviously as an unfit 67 year old, I can't!

Splodgerbodgerbadger · 11/10/2022 13:21

Yes I remember dreaming about this too. We moved house just before I turned 8 and when we were looking at houses, there was one that had two separate sets of staircases, I really, really wanted my parents to pick that one, I actually had dreams about those stairs. They didn’t pick that one, though 21 years later they moved house and guess which one! Though one of the sets of stairs had been taken out much to my disappointment.

DoubleHelix79 · 11/10/2022 13:25

I definitely had dreams about 'walking' up or down stairs with great big leaps, as if the gravity had been turned right down. Not floating though.

PornographicPriestess · 11/10/2022 13:29

The memory of being carried as a baby/toddler makes sense I suppose, or at least more sense than remembering a random dream. In my memory I sort of psyche myself up to the jump and kinda jump/float down.

It's only at the one particular house though - the one we left when I was seven.

OnlyYourSharpestMinds · 11/10/2022 13:34

Yes, and I have such vivid memories of how it felt! And I was so convinced I could do it/had done it before, that I jumped from the top of the stairs when I was about three and miraculously only ended up with a nose bleed...my poor Mum, she must have been horrified 😬

Anyfeckinusername · 11/10/2022 13:38

Yes! I am sure it also floated up the garden in a gust of wind. I can remember it!

And very, very frequently, until an adult, i could dream I was flying and I would go on trips (our the window, and off where I liked). In a very controlled, mind elevated way and it used to happen when I was almost awake. I controlled it and had to believe it to stay in the air.

I really miss it. I've never been able to dream it as an adult.
