Do you remember floating down the stairs as a child?

Last night my eldest DC (17) asked if I had any memories of floating down the stairs as a child. I do. Very vivid memories that I've never mentioned to anyone else. I don't know how old I was at the time, but we left that particular property (the memory is still clear in my mind's eye) when I was seven, so presumably it was prior to that.

DC also has their own memories of them floating down the stairs when they were young.

A quick Google suggests it's a common phenomenon, but it isn't something I'd come across before.

Obviously I can't possibly have floated down the stairs and it was probably a dream, but why on Earth do people remember that particular dream? It makes me doubt the reliability of my memory.

I often dreamt about this as a kid, and of floating along at speed a few inches off the ground generally. I blame a kids book by Dodie Smith called The Twilight Barking which was a sequel to 101 Dalmatians where the dogs could “swoosh” along the pavement at night 😂. Does anyone else remember it? I must have read it 10 times!

Oh apparently it’s called The Starlight Barking! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Starlight_Barking

I'm not sure what the 'What' is aimed at.

'on glue' is common Mumsnet parlance for being mad, doing strange things - as if you have sniffed glue.

And given that we for a second time have a large number of presumably grown women believing they could float as a child (not that anyone ever witnessed it), and with very few people questioning this, I have to wonder whether this is a joke, or a large number of Mumsnetters have been sniffing glue.

Had you really not understood that people are discussing a very common, very vivid recurring childhood dream?

I had it countless times as a child, and it stuck with me in a way that made it seem so real it was almost unremarkable. It’s a fascinating psychological phenomenon.

I remember sitting at the top of the stairs with my older brother and him saying he could float downstairs, he said he did it all the time and it was easy, he just closed his eyes and arrived at the bottom. I don't remember ever trying it myself and when I asked him about it when we grew up he didn't remember that conversation! We lived in that house from when I was nearly 4 until I was 7, he was 16 months older. Recently, though, I was talking to my younger brother about the house we moved to (he was about 5 when we moved) and he said he remembered floating down the stairs in that house!

Wow that’s so weird. I had this dream when I was in the house we lived in until I was about 9. I remember it so clearly headfirst arms out flying down the stairs.

I don’t remember floating down the stairs but l do remember falling over the top of the sodding bannisters. And getting in deep trouble for it.
