Do you remember floating down the stairs as a child?

Last night my eldest DC (17) asked if I had any memories of floating down the stairs as a child. I do. Very vivid memories that I've never mentioned to anyone else. I don't know how old I was at the time, but we left that particular property (the memory is still clear in my mind's eye) when I was seven, so presumably it was prior to that.

DC also has their own memories of them floating down the stairs when they were young.

A quick Google suggests it's a common phenomenon, but it isn't something I'd come across before.

Obviously I can't possibly have floated down the stairs and it was probably a dream, but why on Earth do people remember that particular dream? It makes me doubt the reliability of my memory.

Yes! I remember that dream. I had forgotten all about it until today. I used to love that dream

FourTeaFallOut · 11/10/2022 13:45

Throughout my who life, I've dreamt of falling down the stairs and when I land at the bottom I wake up with a shudder.

I'm not sure if it's dreaming proper because it happens the moment I fall asleep. I quite often "fall down the stairs" after DH has said goodnight but not before he has got around to turning off his bedside lamp - so within 5 minutes. It's weird.

I had a sleep demon, a classic -sat on my chest one - when I was a teen. Glad that doesn't happen every night, that was terrifying.

OhAmBackAgain · 11/10/2022 13:47

not floating down the stairs. but same as others my brother, friend and me use to compete jumping from the highest step. and yes one day we did all mange the the whole lot! it was never repeated though.

I've actually recently started trying it out at work Blush I'm only at 4 steps at the moment, I do a little skippy dance down the first bit then launch myself into a jump.
now the kids are adults I'm regressing 😆

2bazookas · 11/10/2022 13:47

At 7, I never floated down the stairs but in bed at night I could fly, and often did.
Right over the roof.

cruciallyfree · 11/10/2022 13:49

Yes me! Used to fly down the stairs by putting my arms out and somehow I'd end up at the bottom- probably around 5-6 years old

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 11/10/2022 13:50

I remember this very vividly. I used to think it was real though and convinced I'd actually flown before.
Astral Projection? 👻

tiddlywinks2 · 11/10/2022 13:50

I've read about this, apparently the floating down the stairs memory is an early childhood memory. Usually when you were a baby being carried down the stairs by someone.

Don't know how true that is though.

Aconitum · 11/10/2022 13:52

I thought you meant sliding down head first so was going to say yes. Front door was at the bottom so you had to wrap your arms around your head when you got to the third step🤕🤕

AmberGer · 11/10/2022 14:05

Me too, I would always float/ fly down but never up for some reason?
My flying dreams used to occur very often as a child, I haven't had one for years but do still have them very occasionally, they're my favourite type of dream.
I know how to make myself fly in the dream too, I close my eyes, raise my eyebrows to do this 'thing' almost like a slight strain in my head where it makes my ears kind of pop then off I go, gently floating upwards with complete control of the direction I go in.
I have tried it in real life and just now writing this post. It didn't work 🙁

NCer1001 · 11/10/2022 14:12

Yes! A lot when was little. I always knew it was a dream though and would often hover above the stairs the morning after the dream and consider giving it a try 😬 Would have ended badly 😂

I also remember floating around the whole house too. Kind of like a zero gravity float as apposed to feeling like I was flying.

Best dream ever!

Ethelfromnumber73 · 11/10/2022 14:24

Yes, this happened to me too.

catinboots123 · 11/10/2022 14:29

Oh god I loved flying down the stairs - it was the best dream ever

Imissmoominmama · 11/10/2022 14:33

Oh my gosh- yes!!

It was down the stairs at my Grandma’s house, where we lived when I was little.

Wagsandclaws · 11/10/2022 14:38

I had this, so did my Mum when she was an evacuee in the War.

I was sent to live with an auntie when I was 5, she was my dads sister and whilst my parents both worked as contractors in Germany they left me in Scotland.

I can remember being really sad without them but the overriding memory of living in that huge Victorian villa in a Scottish fishing village was the floating.

It wasn't just down the stairs, I would float from my bed at the very furthest place in the upstairs of the house and then down the huge upstairs corridor, down 4 steps and finally around the corner to the big flight of stairs.

I can remember actively looking forward to going to bed as the feeling of floating and whatever it was that surrounded me when I went down the big flight of stairs was nothing short of euphoric.

In the summer holidays I used to have to sleep in a little bedroom off the main kitchen as they would have B and B guests in the main house. I hated the summer for that reason. No floating!

I was never carried down those stairs as I was 5 years old and my auntie didn't like me very much, I was an inconvenience so I don't think it was connected with being carried down the stairs as a baby or toddler.

That was the only house it ever happened in and I lived there for 3 long years.

I'll never forget it though, that feeling of being surrounded by something so good, so benevolent whilst I was floating. I just don't know 🤷‍♀️

toogoodforthisworld · 11/10/2022 14:42

Omg yes I had the idea I could jump down all of them in one go! Thought I was a little weirdo lol!

flowersun2 · 11/10/2022 14:59

Yes. I think I've answered this question before... But not just floating. A big swing would appear at the top of the stairs and swing me gently to the bottom. Aged about 6. A waking dream for me as I would go into the living room and carry on as if nothing untoward had happened. I remember standing at the top of the stairs for ages waiting for the swing to appear sometimes.

sendwineandastraw · 11/10/2022 15:04

I remember this too and exactly like you describe OP, the moment before and a gentle launch up and then floating down to the bottom, I’d love to know what it means if so many people had the same dream/memory.

Another thing I would get (which I don’t now but can still vividly remember) is the big and little sensation just as I was falling asleep…

The best way to describe it was like too completely contrasting feelings at the same time…

Big, every around me felt huge and inflated I could even feel pressure of the vastness but also something so enclosed and small that it would that my lips would tighten and fingers pinch…

Very strange but definitely a vivid feeling.

Northernsoullover · 11/10/2022 15:05

I still float! Not as often as I did as a child but it still happens.

piglet81 · 11/10/2022 15:05

I dreamed this all the time as a child. Same sensation as pushing off underwater in a swimming pool Smile

PornographicPriestess · 11/10/2022 15:26

If it is an early memory of being carried as some have suggested, why does no one remember floating up the stairs?

OP posts:
Adultchildofelderlyparents · 11/10/2022 15:32

Yes! Oh wow, I didn't realise this was a "thing". I always assumed I might have fallen down the stairs and created a floating memory to get over the pain.

AwkwardSquad · 11/10/2022 15:36

Yes, floating downstairs (my panda teddy was involved in these dreams too, I would swoop down towards him). And maybe a bit older, flying dreams too, very vivid and clear, with a level of control. Amazing dreams, I wish I could still do it!

PornographicPriestess · 11/10/2022 15:48

My dreams tend to be semi lucid as adult, although there are limits on where I can go and what I can do.

OP posts:
theduckinatree · 11/10/2022 17:20

I definitely have had (and still have) recurring dreams that centre around either flying, floating, or being able to run really fast and jump really high. Or running really fast on my hands.

User84 · 11/10/2022 17:36

Yes, not just stairs though, general floating around along streets etc. the carrying memory does make sense
