For starters:

Joe Cocker

OP posts:
ThanksAntsThants · 09/10/2022 22:47

Jennifer Rush

any one of those female singers who sound like they are being strangled while sucking a boiled sweet.

Another vote for Neil Young.

Toni Watson (Tones & I) - can't stand that Dance Monkey song
Florence
Heather Small

Mel C

Her singing voice is spectacular

Somethinginthemilk · 09/10/2022 23:00

Lewis Capaldi!

He seems like a really funny, nice bloke but I can’t understand how people rave about his voice.

Sounds like he’s shouting, straining and going to end up with a sore throat after every song. I think the best singers make it seem effortless - he sounds very forced!

ofwarren · 09/10/2022 23:02

Louis Armstrong

ofwarren · 09/10/2022 23:03

Tom Jones

Lovetok · 09/10/2022 23:15

Thanks to whoever mentioned Katie Melua. I’d actually forgotten about her for a few years! She makes me want to rip my ears off. My husband used to play that stupid bicycles song at me if he wanted to wind me up. Eurgh.

dropthevipers · 09/10/2022 23:26

Florence-fucking D list Larry the lamb tribute act. Jane Mcdonald, barely scrapes into pub singer category. Whoever grudgingly conceded Karen carpenter could sing? That's like saying Einstein was quite good at maths. As to who down voted Freddie Mercury? Are you on glue?

Youreeavinalaff · 09/10/2022 23:32

Paul Heaton, beautiful South/Housemartins (always found him incredibly annoying)
Roland Gift, Fine Young Cannibals " "
Kylie Minogue - nasal
Heather Small - horrible tone
Lighthouse Family singer - zzzz
Mel C - ugly voice
Michael Bolton - annoying and icky
Neil Tennant - annoying/nasal

I'm sure I'll think of some more in a minute, I'm very intolerant of 'annoying' singing voices

Washyourownfeet · 09/10/2022 23:39

Lesley Garret, especially when she’s on game shows and does that stupid bastard yodeling if she’s under pressure.
Elaine Paige, but mainly for her laugh that goes yuk yuk yuk, and finally Shirley Bassey and her shouty gob style of singing.

Buteverythingsfine · 09/10/2022 23:49

James Arthur, have to turn the radio off, luckily getting less popular. Sam Smith and Lewis Capaldi, all the whiny moaning and groaning. I quite like a female power ballad singer though.

FTstepmum · 10/10/2022 00:00

Sophie Ellis Bextor
George Ezra
Sharleen Spiteri (sp?)
Ellie Goulding
Jess Glynne
Sam Smith
Lewis Capaldi
Adele

All have unbearable vocal affectations!

AssumingDirectControl · 10/10/2022 00:13

The sad foghorn, Sam Smith. Appalling to listen to.

actually agree with a lot of these, particularly the diction of Katherine Jenkins and Sia. Mel C can sing but I find the tone of her voice hard to listen to. I don’t mind Adele’s voice but all the “ooo” noises she makes do give me the rage.

Similarly all the fucking weird noises Michael Jackson makes, I can’t listen to his music at all.

And have to switch off any of the affected breathy singers who turn up on John Lewis Christmas ads every year. Such an infuriating singing style. Even worse than people who sing twenty notes when one will do.

Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins is … an acquired taste …

NeverDropYourMooncup · 10/10/2022 00:27

Almost all of the above except for Johnny Cash, Axl Rose, Elvis and . And Neil Tennant was always supposed to be a technically poor not-quite singer, he never pretended otherwise; it's the banality of his voice and the great writing and arrangements that make the PSBs.

Why don't we have more true altos and baritones/basses singing? Everything's about sounding as teenagerish/reedy tenor and wheezing/squeaking/wailing soprano as possible - which probably answers my question, the money's in teenagers who want to hear voices more like their own.

There's a special place in the hall of horrors for Duffy and Leona Lewis though. One sounds like her mouth is superglue shut and the noise is coming out through nostrils stuffed with two Lil-lets superplus, the other is a ringer for the noise four guinea pigs make when you go near their hutches with fresh vegetables.

ofwarren · 10/10/2022 00:39

Lily Allen

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/10/2022 00:44

Anything with vibrato. Just bloody awful.

BalonzIsASurreyName · 10/10/2022 00:57

True altos rare @NeverDropYourMooncup

BalonzIsASurreyName · 10/10/2022 01:00

Though mezzos are not so I suppose @NeverDropYourMooncup has a point re: teenage sound

Galaxyinmypocket · 10/10/2022 01:08

Micheal Bublé
Mel c
Jess Glynn
Ronan Keating
J lo
Sam Smith
Beyonce
George Ezra

Habreathmint · 10/10/2022 01:10

Any Spice girl
Adele
Heather Small
Delores from Cranberries
Chris Martin
Kylie
Bob Dylan
Beyonce
Liam Gallager
Damon Albarn
Lily Allen

Habreathmint · 10/10/2022 01:10

And fucking Duffy!

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 10/10/2022 01:42

I love Mel C!

I can't bear the breathy, whimsical little-girl voices affected by grown-ass women trying to sound vulnerable and sexy. Shit, it's fucking unbearable.

ALongHardWinter · 10/10/2022 01:45

Cilla Black. Honestly, who told her she could sing? And Ellie Goulding. Actually, any female singer who sings in that breathy voice.

ALongHardWinter · 10/10/2022 01:55

Just had a quick listen to something by Jess Glynne as I'm unfamiliar with her voice (although I've heard it numerous times, I wouldn't have been able to say it was her iyswim). OMFG. She takes the biscuit for worst female voice.

Iamclearlyamug · 09/10/2022 17:57

Sam smith - his dreadful whiny voice just kills me.

That and the fact he can't decide whether he's a bloke or a woman 🤷‍♀️

I think it's your issue that you can't decide if they are a man or a woman!
