What are you?

My youngest go to school January, and I'm just thinking when people do the "so what do you do?" question, can I reasonably say SAHM without looking like I'm taking the p given they'll be in school 9-3 five days a week?

Lady of leisure? Ha I wish
Student? I'm only studying part time so doesn't seem reasonable
Economically inactive? Well I like to SPEND it!!

So do I just say "nothing, sent the kids to school, don't have a job"

Your kids are still young so you’re a SAHM. You’re there for them after school which mothers who are working can’t be. Not such a useful descriptor when your kids are older and don’t need you as much.

No reason why you can’t be a SAHM mum any less than a working mum can be called a full time mum.

Tell people "I'm supporting my husband's amazing career" 😁

After school cover for kids is an utter ball ache in many areas. I know a fair few working parents who had to reduce their hours or get a more flexible job when the kids started school. Nursery is "easy", 8 to 6, 1 setting 50 weeks a year with no random shorter days before the holidays, and no outdoor after school activities to be cancelled because the weather is unsuitable.

Add in the increase in illnesses and it's more complicated than the nursery years (albeit cheaper).

I have managed to land a school hours, professional 3rd sector role which was basically a miracle but I'm missing the child free time for exercise and bigger sorting jobs!
