Being in the bath when the plug was taken out because my twat dad used to sing ‘the baby has gone down the plug hole’ to us and I thought it was a real threat

My mum used to sing that to us. What a strange song lol.

@Inclinedtochatter there was a Sapphire and Steel episode where people were trapped in photographs, I must have been very young but it was terrifying!

Dr Who Cybermen in the 70s, the daleks not so much, but the Cybermen.

I was going to say Sapphire and Steel too. I barely remember it, but I remember I was scared!!
aldo scared of nuclear war - watched some horrific film in school (age 14/15)

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 02/10/2022 20:55

The horse's head scene in the Godfather. I didn't sleep until it got light for days after seeing that (fortunately in the middle of summer).

Also a prehistoric dog/bear thing in my book of extinct creatures. I was fine with the dinosaurs but the other creature lived under my bed and came out and sniffed round the bedroom at night. OK I'm not actually actively scared of that any more but thinking about it makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck.

WoodenStackingRainbow · 02/10/2022 20:55

Oh and the Oriental Nightfish

UWhatNow · 02/10/2022 20:55

Teachers!
Spiders
Red ants
punk rockers
sick
Doctor Who theme tune
sparklers
(after that advert with the screaming girl)
ditto train tracks
(public service ads had a lot to answer for in the 70s! Effective though)

Yes, the nuclear war threat was terrifying. Could really have done without seeing Threads when I way to young to see it.

AlwaysLatte · 02/10/2022 20:57

Dr Who. Strangely just the title music not the programme (late 70s). I'd hide behind my dads legs (it was on for my much older siblings),

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 02/10/2022 20:58

I also remember liking but being afraid of Survivors, and also Sapphire and Steel, but I think that was a bit later?

Jewelanemone · 02/10/2022 20:59

The creatures in the TV show 'Banana Splits'. Especially the talking head on the wall.

The sea devils in Dr Who.

Tootels · 02/10/2022 20:59

Johnny I want my liver back..

The story tells of a young boy (Johnny) who is sent on an errand to buy some liver for tea. On the way he gets distracted and spends the money on sweets, so instead goes to the graveyard and steals the liver from a freshly buried corpse. That evening the ghost of the deceased returns to reclaim the stolen organ.

I'm ok with them now , but .........
flushing the toilet when you are the only person upstairs ( up until I was around 12 )
I used to think the water would overflow and pour down the stairs.
And I got into vampire films I used to think they would tap on my window to get in and I was also used to think they'd get me in the bath.

Bart Simpsons evil twin that lived in the attic

AsanteSanaSquashBanana · 02/10/2022 21:01

One of my earliest memories is my mum telling us to hide when Jehovah's Witnesses came to the door. I thought they were called Jehovah's witches and remember crouching behind the sofa being absolutely terrified that they were going to come and get me. Even now if I ever see them handing out leaflets in town I get shivers down my spine!!!

ScottishLavender · 02/10/2022 21:01

@Takingturnstogether

OMG Marianne Dreams still scares the bejeezus out of me.

Sapphire and Steel too. No idea why that was kids tv?

VouisLuitton · 02/10/2022 21:01

@DickeryDock I came on to say GhostWatch too.

I couldn’t look at the curtains in my bedroom for years!

Snazzysausage · 02/10/2022 19:41

Cybermen, the originals from the late sixties. If dh is watching Dr Who, I don't stick around in case a random Cyberman comes on.

Me too!

Also this. I figured it would only take him about half an hour to get to my house and come into my bedroom and kidnap me. Combined with power cuts at the time, I spent a lot of that winter being generally terrified 😨

When I was very young in the early 70s I was scared of Hector the dog in Hector’s House.

Fire, I’d wake most nights and be convinced that I could smell smoke and my mom would have to check. I think that stems from when a nearby shop burnt down and I saw what could happen.

The back boiler on the gas fire made a bang when it heated up and this terrified me, again that came after a house by my junior school was destroyed by a gas explosion when I was 7 and no one could convince me that the bang the boiler made wasn’t the start of a gas explosion.

In my teens I was scared of nuclear war.

schnubbins · 02/10/2022 21:03

Escalators.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 02/10/2022 21:03

Jaws the Bond villain
The witches
The theme tune to rhubarb and custard
Quicksand
Railways (school safety video)
Paintball (Byker Grove)
