The incredible hulk from the 80's and hammer house of horror🙈

user1471446478 · 02/10/2022 21:47

Catweasel and Dr Who (especially the one with the giant glowing maggots)

Awoooga · 02/10/2022 21:48

Maybugs
Moths
The dark

I’m feeling a bit scared now after reading this thread 😂 off to put some nice TV on…

Changenameobviousreasons · 02/10/2022 21:49

The Rescuers!! I was 21 before I was convinced to watch it again.

TheSausageKingofChicago · 02/10/2022 21:51

Quicksand
Nuclear war

Anotherusernom · 02/10/2022 21:51

Poseidon Adventure. Accidentally watched some of it and then had nightmares for 10 years. Still get funny if below deck on the cross channel ferry.

Oh and the Oriental Nightfish

Omg yes!! I'd completely forgotten about this. It was on a video my parents had taped for me- a film or something they taped off the TV. I'd watch it and this weird shit would come on afterwards.

My mum had a print in our kitchen that I was scared of because it reminded me of that video (it had nothing to do with it really)

Ugh.

Quicksand - thanks to the neverending story, though I’m sure I heard real life horror stories as a child too.

Spontaneous combustion - does anyone else remember this being a thing on the news? There was a documentary on it too which really freaked me out. I think they worked out that it was people sat too close to fires etc but I still think about that documentary sometimes.

Escalators - again, thanks to horror news stories of people being sucked in.

Pylons

Lightning

Fire

Yes my Grandparents had a big scary looking book all about spontaneous human combustion, ball lightening and ghosts.
I remember reading about an elderly lady who apparently burst into flames whilst sat in an armchair. Her name was Mary Reeser and there was a picture of her leg in her shoe surrounded by ashes!
I must have only been about 9 or 10 and for years afterwards I panicked if I had a temperature and was scared I would spontaneously combust!

My friend had this book too. Think it was called something like 'the Unexplained'. We spent hours reading it.

The hat stand in the hall. It was piled with so many coats it looked like a massive monster. I think I was 10 before I could go upstairs alone without running. My parents knew how extremely afraid I was of it. Problem would have been solved by replacing it with coat hooks on the wall. It would definitely still scare me now. No money would persuade me to have one in my house.

WheelofLife · 02/10/2022 21:55

Spontaneous combustion

halfbakedkate · 02/10/2022 21:57

I second the child catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Still cannot watch it..chiiiiiiilllllldrin....
Also Pylons. Being a child in primary school in 1980 was a harrowing experience because of the public safety videos they used to show you.

Iizzyb · 02/10/2022 21:58

The bin lorry - not so much now as when I was small but the noise still gives me a start if I hear the crushing machinery

The Rescuers!! I was 21 before I was convinced to watch it again.

Madam Medusa and her two sidekick crocodiles gave me the heeby jeebies.

Anyone remember the original Goosebumps series? Seriously scared the crap out of me, still does.

AnneElliott · 02/10/2022 22:01

Another vote for Watership Down - I really hated that film. Can't watch it even now.

Bedsheets4knickers · 02/10/2022 22:01

This .. still can not believe they thought it was ok for kids .

Zelda from Terror Hawks!!! 😭

PaperwhiteTheGhost · 02/10/2022 22:03

Carbon dioxide poisoning!

I saw something about it just before we went on a caravan holiday and I was convinced we were all going to die from it. Then my dad got a headache and it was game over. I was hysterical.

We lived.

SergeiL · 02/10/2022 22:03

That James Bond one where the girl gets painted and dies.

Barkcloth · 02/10/2022 22:04

LaQuern · 02/10/2022 19:39

The opening credits for an ITV series called Armchair Thriller.
Around 1977 or 1978? Terrifying.

Yes!! There was a terrifying episode about a haunted car

TrainspottingWelsh · 02/10/2022 22:10

Remembered another, the priest hole at my aunt and uncles. I was young enough to not fully understand how or why they were used, and something got lost in translation and I had the idea priests were permanently locked in/ buried alive.
