Just wondering.

The people saying "I'm pro-life for myself but others should be able to decide for themselves" are pro choice too.

I honestly don't think I've ever met a genuine pro lifer as in someone who thinks abortion is wrong in every circumstance, including my own devout Catholic grandmother.
She knew a woman who refused a termination in early pregnancy after finding out she had cancer, she refused all treatment that could harm the foetus and died not long after giving birth, leaving her alcoholic husband to raise a newborn & 4 other children.

Genuine pro life ideology is dangerous & I'm glad it's incredibly rare in society as a whole (not just MN)

NoraLuka · 29/09/2022 17:58

I was close to having an abortion once, didn't go through with it and don't think I ever could.

That's me though, it's a personal decision and everyone should be free to make the choice that's best for them.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/09/2022 17:56

Unless it's rape or the baby has a condition that is incompatible with life.

Then you’re not pro life

You are also that murder us actually ok in some circumstances.

Not sure I’m happy with that tbh.

Ponderingwindow · 29/09/2022 17:59

Do you mean the people who would expect me to carry a pregnancy to term despite the fact that I am taking one medication that causes severe birth defects and that damage would already be done by the time I discovered the pregnancy? Then i would also have to stop other medications that doing so would severely risk my health so there is a decent chance I would be dead before the baby could be born?

pro-life people don’t exist. I live in the U.S. The people trying to ban abortions have no qualms about killing women like me.

Actually sometimes the pro choice is about pro abortion. I was bullied by a doctor when I was pregnant at 17 as he said I was too young, I was bullied when I went to the Brook for a pregnancy test back in the day when you couldn't buy tests, they said as I had a young baby I should have an abortion.

Then when I was pregnant at 38 and politely turned down the triple test the doctor got very annoyed as it needed to be done quickly as we were running out of time for amnio and then abortion if needed. He got really angry and the midwife had to intervene and tell him to stop and that my Consultant had discussed it with me (calmly I might add) and I wasn't having it.

So I'm not entirely convinced that all pro choice is as kind and supportive as people think.

I think you can get people being unpleasant at both extremes.

This makes my point, really: the word is CHOICE. So if you want/need to terminate, you should be able to do so. If you want NOT to, you should equally be able to do so. No one should be pressured or bullied in any context. There is no extreme here.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/09/2022 18:00

I still think it's murder but wouldn't judge anyone who had one in those circumstances. There are absolutely no circumstances in which I would ever have one though.

WallaceinAnderland · 29/09/2022 18:01

If you are pro-life and you genuinely have to choose between the mother's life and the foetus's, which would you choose?

candycaneframe · 29/09/2022 18:01

Toddlerteaplease · 29/09/2022 17:55

Yes. I believe that abortion is murder. But you aren't allowed to say that on Mumsnet.

Hope you don't get that nursing agency job you've been going for

Toddlerteaplease · 29/09/2022 18:01

@Ponderingwindow I have had really nasty replies when I've said if before.

daisyjgrey · 29/09/2022 18:01

Not your body, not your business.

Nonetheless you've been allowed to say it. 'allowed to say' something doesn't mean 'people must only reply to agree with you'.

Unless it's rape or the baby has a condition that is incompatible with life.

But not if it's life threatening to the mother? Which in most cases also ends the life of the unborn child. So both could end up dying when the mother could have been saved by having an abortion.

Well it felt extreme to me when I was being shouted at so I think there is an extreme but there shouldn't be.

Care to nail your colours to the mast OP, or are you just a 'Wind 'em up and watch 'em go' merchant?

If you really believe you would never have an abortion, you at incredibly naive.

if you are bleeding and the baby is dying and sepsis is setting in, the treatment is an abortion. If you have an ectopic pregnancy, the treatment is an abortion.

If you were told that your unborn baby is going to die no matter what you do and that you could leave your other children without a mother or keep living, would you really not avail yourself of a medical procedure to save your own life?

orchiopera · 29/09/2022 18:05

Lavendersummer · 29/09/2022 17:19

Yes. Sadly Mumsnet as a rule isn’t very prolife. And not even very civil to pro-life opinions

I don't see anything sad about that.

Surtsey · 29/09/2022 18:08

While I accept that some people object to abortion on faith grounds or for other reasons, that does not give them the right to prevent anyone else from having autonomy over their own body and what happens inside it.

Yes, but I make that decision only for me.

Everyone else, choice.

In that case you are pro-choice.

Namechangedforthisonetoday · 29/09/2022 18:11

So in the rape or incompatible life scenario it no longer becomes murder toddler? I think you need to step away and have a think about these bizarre caveats you are issuing. It was murder 2 minutes ago, now it’s not?

ladydimitrescu · 29/09/2022 18:12

@samstownsunset have you never heard of a woman finding out she is pregnant after 12 weeks? It's extremely common Confused

OnLockdown · 29/09/2022 18:13

FizzyBiscuits · 29/09/2022 17:50

Those people saying you're pro-life for yourself but pro-choice for others doesn't make sense... if you're pro-choice for others, you're pro-choice, but your personal choice would be to continue with a pregnancy.

Exactly!

I'm against abortion. I once saw a video of what the procedure actually involved and have never been able to get the image out of my head.

I once saw a video of what life saving heart surgery entailed OP, I’m not against it though? Maybe stay away from things like Casualty etc in the future.

Fine, so that would mean you would feel unable to have one. No problem. Your choice.
What about other women?
