Cost of living crisis
Choice between heating v eating
Pound dramatically falling
Higher interest rates
NHS on brink of collapse

And now the warning of a flu-covid “twindemic” this Winter

It’s all quite overwhelming and sad and seems to be never ending 😞

Definitely get how your feeling but try to limit the amount of news you consume and don’t look any further than the here and now,we have to concentrate on what we can do in our small place in the world…and remember none of us get out alive 💕

Do ppl make these posts just to moan and wallow in panic and misery? Genuinely don’t see the point to them.

Yes let's all bury our heads In the sand and hope it all goes away. Actually you do that, me, I'll be keeping up to date with current affairs so I am informed and can ensure I can continue to enjoy the fruits of my labour by making decisions to protect my finances.

What a stupid thing to say 🤦🏼‍♀️

Turn off the news! Stop voting tory! We'll all be huddled round our tealights and terracotta plant pots and it will be the toilet roll disaster of 2020 all over again. BBC news whipping people up into a frenzy! They only tell us certain things for a reason. When the queen died, there was no other news to report on!?

Celticandco · 30/09/2022 23:53

When the queen died, there was no other news to report on!?

Of course there was, plenty about Ukraine etc but obviously further down the news, 'they' don't make it all up you know

I am basing it on far more than the people I know. Do some research! The majority of people have not allowed for interest rate rises on their debt, with their live now, pay later mentality. so any blip will send them into further debt very quickly. A majority of people have no savings or contingency plans and will soon end up in very tricky situations. People need to take responsibility for their own actions.

Ever occurred to you why people at the lower end have no savings or investments?
Or should they get a better paid job???

Research shows (ONS) many people people are paying 50 to 75% of take home pay just on rent & on interest rates, the financial experts, just a few months ago, were predicting them to peak at 2 or 3%.
Obviously Mr Expert here with crystal balls, knew they'd go to 6 or 7% doubtless you also knew Truss would cause mortgage rates to go even higher! You have factored that in haven't you?

As for "Do some research" i'm not the one coming out with anecdotes.

anon666 · 01/10/2022 08:04

I think we've been through some tough years socially and economically. It will probably all make sense in retrospect but right now it does feel pretty bleak.

When I feel down I try to think that at least it's better now the world has opened up again following COVID.

The government are complete idiots but they are just making a global crisis worse and more painful for us. They're unhelpful but not 100% responsible for it all. Mind you, nor was Gordon Brown responsible for the entire worldwide economic crash, but the right wing newspapers would have it that way.

Things will get better. Just batten down the hatches, secure your family finances, and hold on for the ride. And try to be grateful for what we do have. We live in a safe country without natural disasters like Pakistan which is half flooded, war like Ukraine, and life threatening poverty like most of the world.

Liwwybettykins · 01/10/2022 08:06

I genuinely remember mortal fear with the threat of an empty loo roll aisle… wash your bum in the shower? Heathens. One step away from certain doom!

Personally, I like keeping informed about what’s going on. There’s the occasional possibility that having a working knowledge of the state of play might help me to make an informed decision or two…

organisedmother · 01/10/2022 08:22

Just checked to renew my mortgage as it runs out in feb, I’m with nationwide went from paying £662 to a new fixed rate of £989…. I just need to magic £327 a month, I’m holding out and checking daily, all the fixed rates are couple of pounds difference 2/3/5/10 year fixed.

well that’s the cherry on top really 😓

FlossyChick · 01/10/2022 08:35

Yes- winter is coming…. I can remember 3 previous recessions- we will come out of it.
Honestly- the only thing to do it VOTE a different way- and to try to cover your own bases in the best way (heating/eating/bills) It will end or get slightly better at some point, one way or another- the economy does boom and bust, despite what politicians may say.
Try to enjoy the small things in the meantime- friends and family.

And there's Russia.

And the Tories thinking that cutting benefits is one way to help re-coup the tax cuts they have just given the wealthy- seems astonishing to me that they think this will play well generally- although it will with Tory voters of course.

But Tory voters don’t like it either. That’s why Labour’s 33 points ahead in the latest poll,,

RedStef1983 · 01/10/2022 08:52

This I was I don’t really watch/read the news anymore. I stopped during the pandemic and felt so much better for it.

just keep on doing what you have to do

Kittensquirrel · 01/10/2022 10:18

MaybeIWillFuckOffThen · 29/09/2022 09:20

Seriously it's amazing what people will say - don't watch the news, don't worry about the big picture, one foot in front off the other, we'll survive etc. Some people will put up with literally anything for a "quiet life" (or as I've surmised, are in no danger from and may actualy be benefitting from the current disaster capitalism being deliberately engineered by the govt).

How do you "you've only got one life, just ignore it all, anger is bad for you, enjoy the 'little things', try to be happeeeeeee" people think any positive change has been made, or injustice overturned? By everyone just sticking their hands in the sand and saying it could be worse? The civil rights movement - should the oppressed black people of 60s USA just have go their heads down and got on with it, after all they weren't actually enslaved any more - should they have just focussed on their families and 'the little things', lived modestly, listened to bloody classical music? What about the French Revolution, the Russian Revolution, the fall of the Berlin Wall? Sometimes righteous anger is what it takes to move the needle of history

For goodness sake people wake up! We are not going to ride the storm by ignoring it and listening to Classic FM.

I'm amused by people thinking it's 'the media'. This is all real

Absolutely.

Pm an Chancellor have a effectively destroyed trust in the U.K. due to the direction they want to take.

Oh ignore the news it’s all doom and gloom.
That’s of course what they want you to think. Murdoch can help here. Here’s Meghans latest whatever…

The govt have colossal change planned and I don’t think everyone really understands what that means. Wake up.

And anyone that uses the phrase sheeple is automatically a twat.

I would also add anyone who starts a comment with "Absolute tosh".

In fact this tory govt has presided over the destruction of our services, and have much more planned including a bonfire of workers rights.

The right wing media has taught us who to blame for the daily struggle caused by the greedy tories (refugees, Labour, the monarchy etc) and the war. They are gaslighting us to believe their suicidal brexit has nothing to do with it (the whole world is in recession) and yet no-one is struggling like us. Vested interests tell us to accept it all and try harder. Just remember your despair over tory corruption at the next general election, and fgs don't take your opinions from the right wing gutter press.

ChilledBeez · 01/10/2022 12:32

If you stop reading/watching the main stream news you won't be feeling so on edge. No point worrying about it as what will be - will be. Keep in mind that the news gets most of its views when there is fear among people anyway. The Amish were the least affected people in the US as they do not watch t.v. or read news papers. Fear Porn is a very lucrative game.

Diamondsareforever123 · 01/10/2022 12:53

I'm entirely with you OP. I'm 68 and remember the Thatcher years, but they were nowhere near as bad as this. The Tories started to cut public services when they were elected. Our NHS was ill prepared for Covid. The Tories have since been cutting services and there's nothing left to cut! Brexit has put the UK in a disadvantaged state compared to the EU countries. They're sorting out energy bills, we have a self serving cow in power who couldn't care less. People are going to crack up completely. People are going to be cold and hungry. This is when the shit will hit the fan. I give it to December or January next year. It's going to be very, very bad.

The pound had her. This low several times over the last few years and no one’s even noticed. I dabble in currency so I know. It’s just Liebour scaremongering again.
Is Brexit also the cause of this all over Europe? The pound is still higher than the Euro and the Dollar.

@threatmatrix

So the pound was this low 'several times over the last few years' and you're the only one who noticed? Impressive.

It’s not looking good is it?
Banana2079 · 01/10/2022 14:12

Couldn’t care less tbh
I will just Live within my means and just get on with it I’m not worried about flu and Covid there has been flu and illnesses going round every winter for eons
I can cook from scratch so making a cheap meal is not difficult I usually make things like Lentil and vegetablecurries and stews Using cheaper cuts of meat, soups are cheap n easy to make
I’m also going to invest in an air fryer and I’m only using the microwave to warm up food from now on as it’s cheaper

Exactly. Avoiding reputable news outlets will only make you stupider, less prepared and less informed. Reading right wing news media will do the same while also gaslighting you into acting against your own interests.

Waving from sunlit uplands.

threatmatrix · 01/10/2022 14:42

Yes , 2026 it did. Where’s your source from. You’ve also failed to comment on the rest of my post??? Couldn’t you find a graph to go against me ?

Diamondsareforever123 · 01/10/2022 15:24

I so agree with you. The situation we are in - not just the UK but globally - is the worst I have experienced, and I'm 68. We need international social policies that help people and not continue to make the rich richer.

If you couldn't care less, why are you using an air fryer because it's cheaper? If there is nothing to worry about, why would you need to budget?
