It’s not looking good is it?

Cost of living crisis
Choice between heating v eating
Pound dramatically falling
Higher interest rates
NHS on brink of collapse

And now the warning of a flu-covid “twindemic” this Winter

It’s all quite overwhelming and sad and seems to be never ending 😞

Hahaha that's hilarious. Quite sure the chaos will continue with a labour snp coalition. Have you listened to them?

The point is to avoid anxiety over matters beyond your control, not to make out like they don't exist if out of sight. Contrary to what may be commonly put forward, people can't really change systems they're a part of, at least not easily.

This was going to happen regardless of which party was in power. The decline of the UK has been ongoing for decades from the fall of Singapore to the Suez crisis to the overinflating of the Sterling and the gutting of industry. It was not Brexit or that one PM on red/blue team that knackered everything. They could have made things less bad, maybe even temporarily good, but in the end, there is no real route out of what we're on course for. As a lot of other nations will find out soon too.

I don't begrudge someone from not wanting to read or hear about how shit everything is from, say, climate change and ecological collapse, even if it's far more important than the UK gov't torpedoing the economy below the waterline.

Finally some common sense. You are 100% correct. This country has been badly run for 100s of years. The last 100 especially so. Career politicians not prepared to make big decisions for dear of losing their job. This is reason there are energy issues, NHS issues, financial issues. Note the word issues none are crises!!

?

In terms of the country, it's working very well for the wealthy. Billions were paid during COVID, with many more millionaires made using tax payer money.

It does not need to be like this.

The fact that the PM suggested a woman spend her day on the bus because she cannot afford to have heat in her home is just inhumane.

Just in case anyone’s in any doubt about what shit we’re in - I’m currently in Spain. I got €150 for £153 yesterday.

Times are very depressing indeed. I had all my covid jabs and side effects became worse with each one. The first, just a bit of a sore arm. The third, I hurt from head to toe and couldn't work for 3 days. All 3 were the Pfizer vaccine. On Thursday I had both Covid and Flu jabs. They were done at 9.30am. The Covid one was Moderna. By 9pm I was in hospital. Racing pulse, rapid heartbeat, hard to breathe, dehydrated.

I had Covid the first Christmas and was very ill, developing pneumonia. That's why I've been diligent in having the vaccines. I don't think I'll be having more.

I’m an optimist and whilst I sympathise with the effects you experienced, all I can think is how on earth would one say “times are depressing” and in the same sentence refer to a vaccine that was developed against an illness that resulted in a pandemic and we are now socialising, holidaying, partying, hugging, kissing etc as a result of that very vaccine!

And I've just checked and it was the fact he was proud he introduced buses passes when told that an old lady was spending her day on the bus as she can't afford to have heat in her home.

Again, total lack of humanity.

Its so sad that people being unable to have heat in their homes or feed their children is quite normal under this government.

ScotsLassie322 · 08/10/2022 16:53

I'd also like to know why people think labour would be worse, what would they do that would be worse?

Plus, the PP must have paid a fairly substantial fee for the exchange, so it’s not like the pound has fallen below the euro as their post might indicate.
According to the current rate £153 = €174.15.
I transferred €250 last Friday to a company in the EU and was charged £220.23.

I got it from an ATM - isn’t that how people usually draw money out?

ONLY if no fee ie Revolut

Doingprettywellthanks · 09/10/2022 18:35

this is what happened…

susannah Reid raised the case of the oap who was riding on a bus all day to stay warm and asked for BJ’s view re what she can cut back on. His response

don't want Elsie to cut back on anything, let's talk about Elsie and what we are doing and - just to remind you that the 24-hour freedom bus pass was something that I actually introduced.'

Yep but don't forget you'll get hit with either a fee and/or the exchange rate won't be that great verses the official exchange rate/spot rate etc is at the same moment in time..

That's how the bank makes money out of the transaction.

This. £153 = €150 just doesn’t reflect the current exchange rate. It makes it look as if the pound was weaker than the euro.
I run a business dealing with EU based companies. I just checked and if I wanted to pay a €150 invoice today I would be charged £132.61 with Wise (TransferWise).

You should be taking enough cash with you by ordering on line in the UK, say the no1 Currency exchange, where you can collect from a store.

Then using a credit card with no fees for general spending, another bonus is you'll get the inter bank exchange rate, which is better again, always pay in Euros (or local currency) not £ if the terminal asks you which currency or you'll pay for that conversion on top, same with ATM if you must.

Drawing out from an ATM is a very expensive way to get Euro's.

Fairly obvious to have your flu and Covid jabs I'd have thought.

"fairly obvious"?
"fairly obvious" to blindly trust people who said "2 weeks to flatten the curve"? Remember that one?

Don’t read the news.
One foot in front of the other.

Yes this. My smart metre isn't allowed to go over £10 per day. I try to spend under £100 a week on food for the six of us. So whatever is in my power I control. I wanted to buy fish fingers for the kids and was shocked to see a box of Asda own over £5 today. So I decided to get a kilo of chicken for under £5. So that's my choice and I'm happier doing this than going bankrupt. The house is set to 15 degrees. I used to wash clothes daily but now I can't dry it outside I re wear clothes for longer. It's not fantastic but my MH is better for it.

Vovid flu etc I don't give any headspace at all. It's not my duty to take on the worrys of the world

Bit weird to respond to that answer from over 2 months ago 🙄
