Cost of living crisis
Choice between heating v eating
Pound dramatically falling
Higher interest rates
NHS on brink of collapse

And now the warning of a flu-covid “twindemic” this Winter

It’s all quite overwhelming and sad and seems to be never ending 😞

I honestly think wearing masks is the best thing we can do. I’m a key worker in healthcare (thankfully not hospital) and I worked right through all the lockdowns up until last august when I went on maternity leave and luckily didn’t catch anything. I chose not to have any of my covid jabs until after I had the baby (lots of issues TTC). I went back to work in august (with 3 covid jabs in my system) but nobody is wearing masks and I’ve tested positive this week. I will be wearing a mask for the rest of the winter.

vaccines not helping then?

Yes this is a start for sure and also everyone should stop paying their bills until they sort this shit out. They only have 160k thereabouts who've signed up to say they will stop paying on the 1st but it need many many more. Enough of this!!!

Oh I've just realised...

mum and I are both arguing, with different electric companies, that they have set a too high direct debit. I am in credit by £300+! They are trying to argue that I should leave the money with them.

mum managed to get her DD reduced. We are both on fixed rates.

iJust realised, all the providers are trying to hang on to money because they think so many won't pay.

Great if you are offered a Covid booster and or free flu shot but I'm guessing £10-12 is going to be beyond lots of people this year.

So, if I stop watching the news my mortgage rate won't go up and I won't be repossessed?
If the £ crashed to its lowest level ever but nobody reported it it wouldn't have happened and everything wouldn't be going up because of it?
Do me a favour."

I agree, the people who say don't watch the news as if burying your head in the sand and covering your ears makes it all go away..

IAmMam · 30/09/2022 21:21

And now I think my car is f*d. Living in a different village to family, school and work, and we can’t afford to pay anymore repairs (already had 3 since March) let alone replace it. Life is getting more and more expensive by the day I wonder how much longer any of us can go on!

LuluBlakey1 · 30/09/2022 21:27

And there's Russia.

And the Tories thinking that cutting benefits is one way to help re-coup the tax cuts they have just given the wealthy- seems astonishing to me that they think this will play well generally- although it will with Tory voters of course.

I feel like the media have been out of control the past 5 years. Ultimately the media rules the roost in life. If the media could just stop so would do many of our problems.

Totally agree with you

shhhhhhhhhhhh · 30/09/2022 21:35

Wallaw · 29/09/2022 12:59

We are personally unaffected, but I'm appalled and horrified by what a shit show this is already is, and is going to continue to be, for so many people. Do you really feel this way about those who are struggling?

Same here, we aren't affected yet but are horrified that others are. This isn't right and it's the right thing to do to call it out. I read a news story today about nurses going without food at work to be able to feed their children. It's not ok to be working and struggling this much. It isn't right for benefits not to be enough to live on, it's supposed to be a safety net. This is the worst I have ever seen it.

Zet1 · 30/09/2022 21:38

Justbefair · 30/09/2022 19:22

Agree with many posters, don't watch the news, always sets the worst scenario. Tbh with the money from government to pay towards heating bills it will help a lot and now that's capped as well, after the anxiety of fearing the worst portrayed by the media, I felt relief. Yes still higher than before but not as horrific as was described, got to take a lot of journalism with a bug pinch of salt as they thrive on sensationalism. X

It will be bad for many even with the help. The price per kWh is capped, not the amount you can pay monthly.

Ultimately the media rules the roost in life. If the media could just stop so would do many of our problems

Media takes many forms and we all digest it in various ways, but the notion that it can just stop and therefore our problems too will stop, is the perfect example of sticking your head in the sand. Media is just an account of what’s actually happening in real time, people knowing about what’s going on and talking about it. That is actually what media is in this day.

It’s worrying that people would rather be uninformed.

shhhhhhhhhhhh · 30/09/2022 21:47

Luxurysleuth007 · 30/09/2022 19:39

Interesting to see so many of the ‘heads in the sand, ignore it and it’ll go away, don’t watch the news’ posts. Yes I understand the rationale behind that type of thinking but the truth of the matter is many of these problems are going to have real implications for so many and pretending they don’t exist will surely make the reality harder to process.

Quite, I'm not sure you can hide from rising energy bills, mortgages, fuel and food costs at the same thing. I'm all for staying positive and enjoying life (I do this too, as well as staying on top of current affairs) but it isn't great at the moment and burying your head in the sand isn't going tohelp. Some people are going to struggle this winter, which is horrifying in a developed (or any) country and most of us will get a lifestyle downgrade.

Firecarrier · 30/09/2022 21:55

Stop watching TV - will help a bit.

pcl09 · 30/09/2022 22:14

The only way to generate wealth for everyone to be able to pay their bills is to grow the economy. The bucket of existing cash just isn’t deep enough. The growth agenda has to be fuelled by tax cuts from
people who pay a lot of tax - because guess what - when they spend money, they generate tax and commercial revenue for the rest of us in different ways. Unpopular but true. Our debt to GDP ratio is manageable, which enables short to medium term borrowing which will stabilise in the medium term from growth generated by the tax cuts. Whoever was in government - and I did not vote for the current crew - had to take action to weather the storm. You say it doesn’t look good… but it could have looked a whole lot worse. So there’s no need to bury heads in the sand as others have suggested - but there is a need for us all to batten down the hatches for a stormy ride - knowing there will be better days ahead.

and yes…. I am one of the many whose house will likely have to be sold when my fixed term mortgage rate comes to an end next year. It’s nobody’s fault (although if I were to point the finger at anyone, it would be Putin). But for now I have a roof over my head. More than some, but not as much as others. It could all change just as quickly to be a positive story…. And that’s worth holding out for.

Beachbabe1 · 30/09/2022 22:18

akabluebell · 28/09/2022 23:12

Yes let's all bury our heads In the sand and hope it all goes away. Actually you do that, me, I'll be keeping up to date with current affairs so I am informed and can ensure I can continue to enjoy the fruits of my labour by making decisions to protect my finances.

Well said

Lonelycrab · 30/09/2022 22:25

Unpopular but bollocks I think you’ll find.

LovelyIssues · 30/09/2022 22:31

News is banned in our house. Media love to blow things out of proportion and people keep voting for ignorant useless tories?! What do you expect

Hellsbells35 · 30/09/2022 22:31

Yep, but everyone who voted for the tories voted for this. The rest of us could see it a mile off.

Im not worried though at all. Be grateful, live in the moment and avoid media.

flowerexpress · 30/09/2022 22:42

I agree it's really scary. I realise this has been widely shared (sorry if it's already on here and I've missed it) but here's the link to the petition for a general election if anyone wants to sign:

Yeah, for example energy prices wouldn't have gone up to ridiculously unaffordable levels, Liz Truss wouldn't have become prime minister, sterling would not have fallen through the floor and there would be no forthcoming interest rate rises - if the media had just not reported it.

The media makes it happen, you know.

FuriousFurious · 30/09/2022 23:13

mrsjohnnylawrence · 29/09/2022 11:15

Are you aware that fiat currency has to collapse at some point? As in it cannot go on forever, and the British pound is the longest running fiat currency in history?

The only thing that could prevent a crash would be massive amounts of debt, which could prop it up, but it can't last, and to force people to take out a lot of debt you'd have to do something very big, like collapse lots of small businesses in a year or something.

I wish I understood this!

I'm another one who thinks we should stop consuming so much need. We do need to keep ourselves informed, but the media reports the news in such a sensationalist way that it invokes fear, depression and anger. It's very unhealthy.
Anger is good sometimes.
Thanks to angry people, we've been able to protest and have our voices heard. Sometimes that's led to change but we need to be clear what we're angry about and not being manipulated into it.

Lonelycrab · 30/09/2022 23:15

How exactly is it going to change into a positive story as you say? Budget will take months to pass and your mythical growth wouldn’t ever appear for years, to the tune of 2 or so %

When mortgage payers are looking at 10% or worse, right now, not in 2 years time. Renters likewise with increases.Instability with sterling due to stupidity will effect us all, this has been bought on by our own government. You may be able to go oh there goes my house, Putins fault never mind but that’s not how it’s going to play out for the vast majority of people.
Your post seems like it’s from cchq.
