Not sure where to put this question.
Why do so many English churches have people facing the asile rather than forward towards the alter?

Rapidtango · 19/09/2022 20:41

There's actually an interesting video at the Nieuwe Kirk in Delft where many of the Dutch royal family are buried about the vault and the burials within. Also the Danish royal family at Roskilde - there is a glass sarcophagus for Queen Margarethe which I believe she designed herself. DH, god live him, thought she was going to be buried in it!

KosherDill · 19/09/2022 20:42

Sorry but I'm still confused about the queen's final resting place. I've looked at numerous diagrams and photos online.

She was lowered to the vault, where Prince Phillip has been waiting. But the sketches I've been able to find of the George VI memorial chapel show it at ground level.

So was the lowering of her coffin mainly for effect? Will she be lifted back up to ground level and carried across the larger chapel to the small chapel where her parents are?

And if so, that chapel is pictured as quite tight quarters with most of it taken up with a large square of black marble beneath which her parents lie. Where will the Queen and Prince Phillip go, then? Is there another space beside the black slab? How will they be lowered in?

And tbh, it all seems a bit cramped and non-majestic given her reign and years of service. The dimensions I've found online for the George VI chapel are smaller than my garden shed. I would have liked to see something more grand for Her Majesty.

I think they lift the black slab to access the vault and they go in there.

WhenDovesFly · 19/09/2022 20:46

Yes her coffin will be retrieved from the vault and then buried in the memorial chapel alongside her parents and sister.

Dinoteeth · 19/09/2022 20:50

They will also move Philip.

The vault was designed by the Queen, for her Father it will take 6 coffins so I guess the intent is Charles and Camilla will go in there too. Margaret was cremated so she'd fit.

Andante57 · 19/09/2022 20:52

How odd that something the forces are trained to do on parade (all parades I should imagine, not just royal ones) should turn you against the monarchy so fast when I'm fairly sure it wasn't the Queen training them!

I agree - really weird reason to turn someone from a monarchist to a republican.

Karmocamelian did you read this in the Daily Mail and suddenly have an epiphany? Did the article you read say the Queen personally ordered the the soldiers to faint in the way described?

They don't bury the coffins. They are above ground @WhenDovesFly . That is why they are lead-lined.

The vault is separate to the chapel.

They will retrieve the coffin from another entrance and take it to the vault.

They don't .

Most ordinary churches have pews facing the altar.

Chelsey Davy and Earl Spencer were both at the service in Windsor.

I didn't spot CD. Any particular reason why she would have been invited? I know she was with Harry on and off for a few years, but seems an odd invitee, unless she formed a particularly close bond with the Queen or Charles.

MrsFezziwig · 19/09/2022 21:16

@KenAdams just popping back to say I’ve nominated your threads for Classics - a snapshot of a unique day from Mumsnetters’ points of view. They need a few more nominations to make it happen though if anyone’s interested, so hope the last thread hasn’t been hijacked by the usual dull Harry & Meghan stuff - really not what these threads were intended to be about.

NiqueNique · 19/09/2022 21:19

Yes Chelsy was there. Either that or her doppelgänger. Don’t know in what capacity.

She was at Harry and Meghan’s wedding as well so I imagine either her family or her husband’s family have some connection to the Royals, or maybe she’s still friendly with Harry or some of the other younger royals.

Rapidtango · 19/09/2022 21:19

How do we nominate?

The BBC did a prolonged close up shot of her towards the end of the service at Windsor. Her then the Earl of Spencer when a hymn was being sung. Perhaps Harry invited her as his guest as she’d been a huge part of his life for so long.

Thank you, @WhenDovesFly that is most helpful.

So the lowering during today's televised service was just for the effect, since she (and Phillip) will have to be raised up again and transported over to the George VI memorial, then lowered there. I wonder if a similar mechanism exists.

I know she commissioned it and approved the design but it really doesn't seem grand enough for her. It's like a little afterthought.

Beachsidesunset · 19/09/2022 21:27

I'll leave this here for posterity.

containsnuts · 19/09/2022 21:27

I'm glad she's finally been laid to rest. Her coffin has been all over the place and loaded in-and-out of various vehicles. It was starting to feel a bit undignified imo.

Vapeyvapevape · 19/09/2022 21:28

Stop it @Beachsidesunset you've set me off again.

The choir stalls usually face the aisle though.

I’ve answered the question about the vault a few posts up and put a photo of the interior? Lots of people asking the question since I posted it. Wonder if my post didn’t land?

How do we nominate?

Just click on Report (one of the options of the three dots) and instead of the suggested categories click on “other” then there is a freehand box to say what you want to nominate
