It’s all very grand, but it’s one day, for one person. That doesn’t fill me with pride.

If we could fix the NHS, if we didn’t need food banks any more, if we could lift people out of poverty and suffering in the UK, if we could have a big more integrity from our Government, then I’d be proud to be British.

Absolute rubbish

Or why still here when it's so shameful and awful .

I don’t think it is shameful and awful. That’s why I chose to live here, and I do have a choice.

Nowhere is perfect, but there is a lot that is good, very good, about the UK and its people.

EarringsandLipstick · 19/09/2022 19:31

When the queen died, there was an initial reaction of respect her in Ireland, particularly after her behaviour when she visited Ireland. But after a day or so, I've been watching this with a mixture of incredulity and bemusement. Just when you think the batshiterry has reached peak insanity, something else comes along to outdo the last one.

Agree completely. I'm also in Ireland and there has been broadly respect & interest from most people but gradually giving way to bafflement at the nature of the OTT commentary & level of excessive performative grief. Listening to people for example hotly debate the motivations of David Beckham queuing instead of skipping it when paying his respects.

Dragging the whole thing out for 10 days & spending so much on it seems mad.

Although billions are watching so maybe not everyone feels it’s nuts.

I certainly don't think it's nuts. I was working today so only saw the odd glimpse but I'm certainly going to look at the highlights (if that's the right word) later. I admire the spectacle & appreciate it as a moment in history.
But I don't watch it & think it's a source of pride for Britain - starting tomorrow, I predict this will all be forgotten & most British people will be giving out, as they move closer to recession. And you'll have to face up to Liz Truss as PM, God help you.

TheBolsheviks · 19/09/2022 19:32

I’d be more proud if no one had to decide whether to eat or heat this winter !

Yes there is.

@SunsetGun

I was agreeing with you . I can't understand these people with such hate for our country yet are still here , if it's as awful as they say why are they still here .

CurrentHun · 19/09/2022 19:35

I can’t stand this negligent government and Liz Truss completely grated, but I thought both services today were impeccable- the readings, the pageantry, the organisation of it all and the huge scale of it and the spectacle of it all. I also felt a lot of affinity with all the people (British or not) who have been to see the lying in state or who turned up to watch the funeral car as it passed, or who said their piece about the Queen’s importance for them in interviews, it is a completely unique moment in history. Also the BBC coverage of it all was brilliant, so much detail and info in there that I would have otherwise completely missed.

I felt like if the monarchy can retain its themes of service and duty towards people, that will be a positive force given the particularly poor crop of politicians we have had in recent years and given the massive challenges we face in the UK and globally. It’s disconcerting losing the constant presence in our national life that the Queen has been, but I think that Charles will do a good job too.

BlueRidge · 19/09/2022 19:35

Well, clearly the two recent major royal events, where millions (or rather billions today, worldwide) have shown their commitment and support for the Monarchy, have riled the Republicans, if the ramped-up toxicity they're showing on Mumsnet is anything to go by.

So, a victory all round, I would say.

Long live the King. Grin

What is? It’s a fact that out of the billions that watched, the vast majority couldn’t be British. Out of the British that watched, we have no idea how many felt proud to be British. Most people I know didn’t watch at all, or watched small sections. I did watch, I was moved and slightly awestruck, but there was nothing there to make me feel proud, or proud to be British. I wasn’t not proud. I was neutral. It didn’t affect my Britishness one way or the other. I’m a traditionalist and in general a royalist, but today’s ceremonies didn’t affect my feelings towards Britain either way.

Boxofsockss · 19/09/2022 19:39

It was amazing. Wasn’t able to watch the whole day as I have a young child but what I managed to see made me so proud. No where in the world can do it like us! Amazing.

Mooshamoo · 19/09/2022 19:41

Im laughing at the brits who think it was great. Im English and I think this week was batshit.

Ive talked to a lot of people from all over the world this week, and theu all said that they think that the English people are crazy. For 3 min reasons

  1. for 24/7 coverage of a coffin for 10 days.
  2. For people queueing for 15 hours to see a coffin.
  3. People fawning over a royal family ,who were friends with pedophiles. Charles was friends with Jimmy saville. And o course we have Andrew.
Mamamia7962 · 19/09/2022 19:42

BlueRidge - Yes, I think the republicans are disappointed that there was no riots or demonstrations today.

LaraLei · 19/09/2022 19:42

Absolute waste of money when people wait 24 hours for an ambulance and can’t afford to heat their houses.

iamsmaller1 · 19/09/2022 15:36

Tax payers paid for the whole thiong. Yes not that much each, but overall a lot! And the principle of paying for a billionaires funeral when we can't be arsed keeping our less well off alive with things like heating makes me ashamed to be British

Totally agree.

It should have been hugely scaled back. It showed just how inappropriate our national priorities are and makes me both sad and angry.

I'm just thoroughly annoyed at how thick/gullible the British public are.

It's embarrassing.

I’m also proud that the UK is standing up for the Ukrainian people and imposing sanctions on Russia.

I’m very proud of the UK’s support of Ukraine and our stance on Putin and his cronies. I’m just saying I’m not proud of pomp and pageantry when we’re heading into a cost of living crisis ! That doesn’t mean I don’t like living here, my friends and family are here and there’s a lot I love about the UK, I would just prefer no one to be worrying about the cost of living this winter. That would make more proud .

Mooshamoo · 19/09/2022 19:45

Has everyone forgotten that king Charles was good friends with Jimmy saville?

I couldn’t care less about the monarchy, certainly not enough to consider myself a republican.

I do however care about child sexual assault, human trafficking and racism. I also care about the cost of living crisis and the people who will die this winter as they’re unable to hear their homes.

When public funding is spent celebrating the burial of a billionaire who led an inherently racist institution that befriended and shielded multiple sex offenders, I have a problem with that.

I’m surprised so many tax payers prefer their money to be spunked up the wall in support of an institution that inherently does not uphold British values.

perhaps we just have different ideas about what British values are 🤷‍♀️

Forgotthebins · 19/09/2022 19:54

Slightly to the side of the main discussion but trying to work out how 4 billion people can be watching it?? That is like 1 in 2 of the world population and most people must surely be working or busy, and certainly there m

I’ve also spoken to people in Europe, the US, the Middle East, Asia and Australasia this week, and all have them have been, at a minimum, been deeply respectful of the Queen’s service over the last 70 years.

Your spelling and grammar is appalling for someone that is English, so I can only assume that the people you’ve spoken to are as well educated as you are.
