I love my country. I'm also proud of my country. I don't need to give detailed explanations of what I love and what I am proud of for the bored angry UK haters to pick apart. I don't understand why those of you, who despise it here so much, who think it's crap, that it doesn't provide enough for you, stay here. If I was so unhappy somewhere I would do anything to get out. To a country that is apparently so much better. Although which countries those would be I have no idea. And neither, it would seem, do many of you.

Are you really telling people who can't afford to put their heating on, or need to rely on foodbanks to eat, that if they're not proud to be British they should simply emigrate? How does that work then?

My local council has just published its 'Warm Space Directory', a list of places where older/vulnerable people and those in poverty can spend a few hours to get warm over the winter. It's now the expectation that home isn't where you go to feel warm and safe - you have to pick over the ice and snow, whether you're disabled or a pensioner or not, to spend a few hours in your local library (if it's still open) to get warm.

I'll ask again - why would anyone be proud to be born in a country which refuses to look after the most vulnerable yet insists we all swell the coffers of the fabulously wealthy?

TBF You sound as bored as anyone, so bored that you fail to realise that people who are critical of the UK's failings want improvement whereas those with their heads in the sand to our many problems (like you) have, by their inability to face and then deal with issues, are part of the problem.

Instead of having any self awareness, your first response & only response to any criticism of the UK is "Go and leave!

This is exactly why we are failing across such a wide range of measures compared to our main competitors.

Gosh you seem very angry!

you know it is entirely possible to be perfectly happy in one’s own life, proud of one’s own achievements and still able to rationally critique the concept of pride in an accident of birth/pomp and peasantry/putting on a show/whatever

You don't think that most other countries also have histories that are questionable?

classic straw man what-aboutery

the bad behaviour of other nations does not preclude us overlooking our own.

it’s attitudes like your that mean that we don’t learn from history. Instead folk take ‘pride’ in the legacy of colonialism, brutality, racism and sex offending.

so long as it’s all dressed up in some fancy clothes

WildfellAnne · 20/09/2022 20:52

I’m neither bored, nor angry, and nor do I hate the UK. I just think yesterday’s events have nothing whatsoever to do with making me being proud to be British; I think it’s a peculiar correlation to make.

I feel it is missing marmite.

pompomdaisy · 21/09/2022 04:17

Not really. Haven't felt proud to be British since we elected this government. Then the Brexit vote destroyed any final remnants.

sashh · 21/09/2022 06:02

People are unable to feed their children, heat their homes and we are setting up 'warm banks'.

But we can spend £££ for one, if not the, wealthiest families in the country to bury their elderly relative.

Proud is not the word I use.

HowVeryBizarre · 21/09/2022 08:30

I am genuinely happy for everyone on this thread who feels like you, but you do realise the rest of the world is looking on thinking bread and circuses.

Beckyfromthecroft · 21/09/2022 08:36

There are things that make me proud to be British but a ridiculously extravagant funeral that cancelled hospital appointments and while we have hungry and soon to be very cold people isn't one of them, it just makes me angry tbh. Any country can do a ridiculous parade and funeral its nothing special.

Mamamia7962 · 21/09/2022 08:38

Howverybizarre - Are they, where have you read that?
