I see this thread has predictable descended into nastiness.

TBH, I’d be surprised if it didn’t! Those calling out the “performative grief/mass hysteria” are just doing the same in reverse - performative sneering, aiming to be more insulting.

All of what has happened in the last 10 days would be fine if the country wasn't in such a mess.

People are dying waiting for healthcare care, even basic emergency care, none gives a shit about them, least of all the 'Royals.

But instead of focusing on the here and now, we have a Nostalgiafest.

PomRuns · 20/09/2022 11:30

@Alexandra2001 I don't really wish to get in a debate with you even though you were very polite :) I really hate the constant negativity about the UK. My head is definitely not in the sand though.

Desmorelda · 20/09/2022 11:36

@PomRuns so what's your opinion on Brexit ? Corruption and pork barrel politics ?
The collapsing state of the NHS, judiciary system etc ? Yes the pagentry was great. Uk can sure put on a decent show but the basic services that we all depend on are in chaos. The effects of brexit have not even kicked in. What's your opinion on those things ?

CurrentHun · 20/09/2022 12:01

I agree with you Alexandra. The focus on the royal death and the nostalgia has been a break and it was very important to do that properly.
But we now have very pressing national and international issues to sort out and unfortunately a very questionable government to help the UK to rise to these pressing challenges for the good of everyone in the UK.

PomRuns · 20/09/2022 12:03

@Desmorelda I was devastated about Brexit.
I wish I hadn’t commented on the thread tbh as I made a decision to not engage with threads that get heated. So I won’t reply again.

Pom yeh I know how you feel (especially after the aggressive re you even British which reminded me of xenophobic ugly-thinking louts in early days and I haven’t heard for over a decade)

Just to say I agree and Flowers

Freedomfighters · 20/09/2022 12:08

I agree op. I am proud to be British. Not rtff because I know how it will have gone anyway.

I genuinely don't get how anyone can be 'proud' of what's essentially an accident of birth. And I especially don't see how anyone can be 'proud' to live in a country where there is so much inequality and needless suffering and poverty.

Flags and marching and fabulous jewels belonging to someone else don't fill me with pride one bit.

LEnferCestLesAutres · 20/09/2022 12:35

I am neither xenophobic nor ugly-thinking, Marsha, and I've never been called a lout! but thanks for twisting my words. I am however British and therefore able to state whether I am proud to be such. (I am not.) That is, after all, the subject of the thread, no?

But what about yesterday’s events made you feel proud to be British - specifically? It was a magnificent state funeral and procession, full of history, tradition, awe and quietness - beautifully done. I was gripped from start to end. But it doesn’t make me feel proud.

Yes you are and I was pretty clear it was the ‘are you even British’ that I found depressing

I am British and I’m also another nationality and that kind of attack wasn’t absent with people who do have those attributes I listed. Gladly I have moved on from that now but seeing it on mn wasn’t great

You don't think people should be proud of their country and heritage then? You'll find suffering and poverty all over the world. Far worse than the UK. Clearly the conditions can't be that bad. Enough people want to come and live here.

WildfellAnne · 20/09/2022 14:17

Well, no, it’d be a very odd thing thing to be proud of, no matter from which country you come. If you can name something specific that someone produced, eg, Shakespeare’s plays, or something that was introduced by a charity or the government, eg, free education for children, they are great things. But I personally don’t feel “proud of being British” that Shakespeare wrote great plays. He taps into our long and ancient history and is part of that. And heritage has as many bad things to be ashamed of as good things to be proud of.

Yes that was really unpleasant. Hope you’re not too upset.
MN really not representative…

Posting anonymously in a discussion forum is hardly ‘performative’ is it?

At least not in comparison to a multimillion pound funeral, thronging the streets, throwing away cut flowers and decent sandwiches or even the actual starting of discussion threads like this one

Nope, I've never understood being proud of what, as I said, is an accident of birth. And 'other countries have it worse' is no reason to be proud of being born in the UK, either.

And conditions here are absolutely awful for millions of people, and about to get a lot worse. Why that's something to be proud of is beyond me - what's so brilliant about a country which won't look after its most vulnerable citizens, yet celebrates its wealthiest ones?

Bringonthebloodydrama · 20/09/2022 18:36

Have a skim read of history and how many lives our arrogant, brutal little country has taken.

I'll never be proud to be British.

You don't think that most other countries also have histories that are questionable?

What’s that got to do with anything? We’re not talking about other countries. Why are you trying to compare?

MsBucket · 20/09/2022 19:18

KimberleyClark · 19/09/2022 15:35

Probably not. Yet other countries seem to much better than at providing healthcare, good public transport, electing decent leaders etc. We are crap at those things.

@KimberleyClark Sounds like a dream come true! What other counties though? Everywhere I can think of seems to have some kind of issue or another. Maybe I need to think outside the box more? 🤔

MsBucket · 20/09/2022 19:18

Wrong.

I love the UK, its history, tradditions and culture. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

But what are you proud of? Loving your country etc is not related to being proud to be British.
