To the PP who says there aren’t that many people there. Are you joking? This is the biggest event in years. I do wonder if some people want it to fail or not be such a big thing??

Wow that one bloke is tall.

I'm sure someone's got some cheese strings available for Charlotte etc ;-)

I noticed him. He's huge!

I know it’s very trivial but I keep wondering if the spider’s hiding in the wreath wondering what the hell it’s got itself into…

I keep thinking about that spider too 😁

I don't get the phone hate thing.
In the past people relied on papers and now we do our own record's.

They are preserving this moment;

The sounds when the bells are muffled is genuinely moving

I wonder if the Earl of Snowdon & Tim Lawrence are replacing the Duke of Kent & Prince Michael of Kent in the march?
Surely there'd be a row of the Queen's cousins - not a cousin, a nephew & a son-in-law?
I thought the Duke of Kent & Prince Michael of Kent met the coffin at Westminster Hall on Wednesday then formed a row with the Duke of Gloucester behind the coffin.

They did. they also joined the procession at the abbey today.

They’re just not fit enough to walk the 40 minutes outdoors plus today or the other day.

The Queen was very close to her nephew, he was at Balmoral just the week before she died so he and her son-in-law would have been included even if the Kents were fit enough to walk.

Yep. Why is George wearing navy?

Navy seems pretty appropriate, dark and somber. He probably doesn't need to wear suits very often yet so just a couple might do

Hellocatshome · 19/09/2022 13:00

Why didn't Harry salute at the Cenotaph is ot because he isnt in uniform? I'm glad George and Charlotte are in the car I thought for a moment they were going to walk which I didnt think was necessarily a great idea.

Yet you wrote this exact post on the first thread...

I'd say that the Australian, Canadian and New Zealand focus is because they are the commonwealth countries where the queen is still head of state. None of the other commonwealth countries have the UK monarch as their had of state so have no place in the procession.

SoupDragon · 19/09/2022 12:57

Protocol wise, I don't think Anne is "meant" to be walking behind it but she insisted when it was Prince Phillip's funeral.

That's right, until hs funeral only the men walked but she insisted, her father's daughter to the end!

Siella · 19/09/2022 13:00

Do you think they're likely to play Nimrod at some point? I absolutely love that piece of music

Zosime · 19/09/2022 13:01

when though? Aren't they following to Windsor in the car and then straight into the next service?

Most of the royals are driving directly to Windsor, I believe, while the hearse takes a longer route. They'll have lunch while they're waiting for it.

Surely there'd be a row of the Queen's cousins

Most of them are too elderly to walk. Gloucester is the youngest.

QuebecBagnet · 19/09/2022 12:45

@LoveMyPiano thank you. Do you know who looks after those 4 horses year round? The army? The palace? A random Mountie who stays here?

They are I would think, looked after by our Armed Services/Police rather than a "random Mountie". The one named George has been ridden (by now King Charles) in the Trooping of the Colour since 2009, Sir John has been ridden by Princess anne, and Darby is part of the touring Police Display Team (Musical Ride). There are two men and two lady riders today.

Impressed with the lads keeping the orb on the coffin balanced.

There are fixings on the coffin to hold the items of state in place.

Yes. Please shut up Huw. Less is more!

I’m watching on Youtube, it has zero commentary. All you can hear is the marching, the band and shouted instructions. It’s lovely as I can’t abide the witterings of tv presenters.

romatheroamer · 19/09/2022 13:01

Agree with a pp about the Duke of Gloucester. He's been in several of the marches and just now is the first time I've heard him be pointed out.

ItsOnlyWordsInnit · 19/09/2022 13:01

It's all gorn downhill on the Beeb website. I certainly cryed [sic] at the sight of that caption.

I agree with you. I don’t get the issue

We’re all on our phones chatting, they are recording. We might not like the look as much but it’s a tall order to expect people won’t want to record a big moment like this

Mounties look fab. I also like that most of the "wheelers" - the ones closest to the coffin just in front of it- are female. In horse drawn carriage teams the leaders are the flashy ones and the wheelers are the strongest ones I think.

I thought they might have had a riderless horse from the Household Cavalry in the procession behind the coffin but I can't see one.

True story - my DGF was in the RHA. When my mother was born he was dispatched to register her birth and came back having given her the name of his favourite wheeler, who was called Julia. DGM distinctly unimpressed.

Got quite a laugh at mum's funeral.

They are too infirm to march as seen the other day at Westminster Hall when they struggled to the exit with the Duke of Gloucester. Had they felt able they would either have joined in the same row as the others or the cousins would have a row to themselves.

He did bow his head. I guess because he's not there as military / in uniform the bow was the appropriate thing

Yes, we only salute when in uniform and wearing headdress

bumblingbovine49 · 19/09/2022 13:01

Sorry should say where the queen WAS head of state
