So the question is, would you join it? I’m just not very patient and don’t think I could do it!

Showing your DH the Lying-in-State live-streaming = only time you get to use the word 'catafalque' in general conversation.

The people with babies in push chairs must have nerves of steel.

Or an IQ below average.

Possibly famous last words but apart from an occasional squawk the children/babies seem remarkably quiet.

I can't imagine anything worse than queuing to see a coffin.

Why is that? Have you had an imagination bypass?

DD saw someone in the news last night who had managed to go round five times in Edinburgh. Not just mad but selfish too, adding to the queue for everyone else.

That's quite theme park- esque isn't it? Like getting straight back in the queue for the log flume as soon as you get off!

Totally😁

FatherDougalsBlueJumper · 14/09/2022 19:40

Jeeez, my bladder only has a one hour capacity. No way would I queue for anything for that long.

Antarcticant · 14/09/2022 19:41

Clearly there was a missed an opportunity to sell 'Fast Track' passes.

Iusedtobecarmen · 14/09/2022 19:43

I'm going. Not to put it on social media as I'm not on any social media.
I wouldn't even take a picture if I could.
I think the constant use of phones throughout has been cringe.
I just feel I want to be there, its strange. Be part of history and pay my own respects (internally).
I'm happy to queue several hours(not 30).
In fact, in the past, when I was a teen I queued many hours to buy tickets for pop concerts and to get into arenas to be at the front. And I mean, many hours!!!!!
This is more important.

My reasoning for length limiting demand is because it is how it works with builders or (in our recent experience) a Behavioural Optometrist.
You want some work done or to see a specialist, you contact them, they say what they can do and what their waiting lists are.
You trade the benefit with the delay. Do you wait 18months for the best, or go with someone OK and a 6 month wait? At some point people stop joining the 'queue' for the best.
I think it will maybe be like this for the lying in state. Once the queue is deemed to be over say 8hrs some people will decide not to go, so lessening demand.

Agree

Be ready for your close up. 💄💅

I'm about as anti-monarchist as you can get, and have no truck for pomp and mawkishnes.

Having said that, I have just watched five minutes of the livestream. It was strangely good to see that people who wanted to do this have the opportunity. People of all ages and nationalities. One woman struggling to walk but there anyway. It must have meant such a lot to her.

Antarcticant · 14/09/2022 19:54

Interesting to see the different ways people are honouring the Queen - bowing/nodding head, small curtseys, crossing themselves, standing for a moment, and some just filing past.

I sincerely hope not. Any other occasion I'd be like yeah!
Not this!!

Fair play. Made of strong stuff.

Yes, there was a baby in a pushchair filing past the coffin. Asleep thankfully though.

I love the bareness of Westminster Hall.

I just love the place full stop.

I don't feel right about live stream close up. Aerial shots would have been sufficient.

It is, isn’t it? I found it very moving

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2022 20:01

I think the close ups are a bit much and i wonder if people are warned, but there's something a bit ASMR about watching it, it's making me feel a bit sleepy.

HundredMilesAnHour · 14/09/2022 20:03

longestlurkerever · 14/09/2022 17:54

The thing I find interesting is that you'd assume the length of the queue would be what limits demand. But then it's the demand that's causing the queue. Imagine how long the queue would be if everyone with a passing interest in seeing the Queen lying in State was in it?

Black Rod was interviewed earlier and he said that they had done many rehearsals over the years and worked out the timings for getting people through Westminster Hall (by using actual people to test how quickly it can be done). Having to stop the lying-in-state so the actual funeral can take place is going to be the limiter on how many people can pay their respects rather than how long the queue is. Which is why there is talk of if/when the queue gets to Southwark Park, they will have to start turning people away as they won't make it to Westminster Hall in time to be allowed in.

He said that despite his position, he will also need to join the end of the queue (and will be doing so).

He also said that they are asking people not to stop at the coffin and bow etc as that slows down the movement of people and means that less people will be able to see the Queen. I assume that this may be why they didn't do timed tickets as they want to try and let as many people get in as possible.

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2022 20:05

Well there's a fair bit of stopping and bowing going on.
