So the question is, would you join it? I’m just not very patient and don’t think I could do it!

I was thinking about this in the shower this morning. Just who on earth has time to stand around outside for 30 hours or whatever it is to look at a coffin?

There was an interview with a headteacher from the Midlands posted on the BBC site this morning. Said she was queuing on behalf of her school. So I guess people have taken time off - maybe 1 per place of work for those employers who want it to happen.

Somehow I think if any of the staff working for that headteacher said the same, their request for leave would not be looked upon as favourably.

Comedycook · 14/09/2022 10:32

I honestly find the people prepared to queue for over 24 hours on the pavement in a tent in the rain, so so odd. I was watching some of them being interviewed on the news. It's just seemed so serf like. Horrible to watch. Don't these people have lives? Kids, jobs? Anything to do?

GroggyLegs · 14/09/2022 10:33

It sounds horrific to me, incredibly boring. But I have a grudging admiration for those with the stamina to do it.

My limit was 1h 20 mins for the Cars ride at Disney Paris. Nearly broke me.

iwasgonnasay · 14/09/2022 10:33

I just started a thread about having to go to London this weekend for a trip already booked which I am now dreading - only because on the one hand I would love to pay my respects to the Queen in person, and will actually BE in London to do so - HOWEVER, there was already a weekend of activities planned / booked which I don't know if / what will still be possible so doubt I will get through a queue like this in time. But if I had nothing else planned I would love to.

I thought tents weren’t allowed?

may have misheard

Comedycook · 14/09/2022 10:35

I'm sure I saw tents out on the news today.

What a ridiculous question. Honestly can you not imagine how loads of people could manage to take 2 days out of their lives to do this? You can't think that maybe people are retired, work part time, took annual leave etc. It's hardly rocket science, you just want to have a good sneer don't you..

I am allowed my opinion are you are yours.

MarshaBradyo · 14/09/2022 10:38

‘What items are banned?

Flasks or water bottles are not allowed, unless they are clear.

Flowers and other tribute items, including candles, soft toys and photographs are also prohibited.

Flowers only should be taken to the dedicated area in Green Park.

Sharp items, paint sprays, padlocks, chains, climbing gear and any other hazardous items are banned.

Banners, placards, flags, advertising or marketing messages are not allowed either.

All camping equipment - including coolers, hampers, sleeping bags, blankets and folding chairs - are not to be brought, as well as non-foldable pushchairs.’

that last one - that’s some intense queuing, can’t even sit on a foldable chair

NooNakedJacuzziness · 14/09/2022 10:38

I'm so sick of all the sneering now. Let people alone. The history books will read "the queue to see the Queen's coffin stretched for 5 miles", not "Donna from Hounslow couldn't be arsed and thought they were all dipshits".

mondaytosunday · 14/09/2022 10:39

No. My mum did have a couple funny stories about trying to find a toilet when she and her sister went to see the Queen on the balcony after her coronation (my mother was one year older than the Queen), but I have no desire to face the crowds and wait just to walk by the coffin.
I did know a few people who will go for the funeral though.

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2022 10:39

So this is all being done for the ‘history books’ ?

donttalkaboutbookclub · 14/09/2022 10:45

It amuses me the way people have suddenly become all religious over the Queen and her funeral yet most churches are empty every week. Folk just are enjoying a free show.

blameitonthecaffeine · 14/09/2022 10:45

I can't believe people aren't allowed camping chairs Shock Whyever not if the queue is going to be static for hours. Plenty of people seem to have them from the footage, anyway.

I know there's a separate queue for disabled people and those who can't stand for long but there's a huge difference between being able bodied and being comfortable standing up for 30 hours!

MiauzenKatzenjammer · 14/09/2022 10:45

Of all the things I wouldn't queue for, that is the one I wouldn't queue for the most.

Comedycook · 14/09/2022 10:49

The public are so gullible. Sitting on a damp pavement in the rain. It's just embarrassing and demeaning

I read a book recently about north korea when the dear leader died. It's not vastly different. And don't forget our right to protest seems to be being erased.

CornedBeef451 · 14/09/2022 10:52

It's absolutely insane! I have no idea why anyone would even consider doing this.

NinHuguenAndTheHuguenNotes · 14/09/2022 10:53

People want to be 'a part of history' it seems. I can't think of anything I would queue for that long. Maybe food if I was starving. But not to look at a wooden box with a flag draped over it. Is she definitely in there?!!

And the people in the future will marvel at how much free time they all had.

Artyblick · 14/09/2022 10:56

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2022 10:14

No. I am struggling to think of anythingI would stand in a 5 mile long queue for. 🤔
I assume people are requesting annual leave to do it, I’m not sure my employers would be keen!

Literally only for that guaranteed winning lottery ticket a pp mentioned upthread! It'd have to be a hefty prize at that!

I literally can't get my head round anyone queuing for that long and know no-one that would. 🤷‍♀️

PizzaFunghi · 14/09/2022 10:56

presumably there will be waste like at festivals, with people leaving camping chairs and blankets etc behind. I hope not. Maybe they can leave them at the bag drop (though given that it said not to bring them, I'm not sure the bag drop would accept them!), or perhaps family and friends can come meet them at the end of the queue to take the items away - not sure how security is for people in the queue and whether others can come near it.

Indoctro · 14/09/2022 10:58

Utterly bonkers to Q for hour to take 2 minutes to walk past a coffin , of someone you don't know.

I don't understand it myself.

TeenDivided · 14/09/2022 10:58

If I lived in Edinburgh I would have gone. the great public transport would have made for easy access.

AuntieMarys · 14/09/2022 10:58

We are in London ( totally unconnected with the queen) for a few days and are totally avoiding that 5 mile area.
Nightmare

I don't think it is 'sneering' so much as utter bemusement
