What could Center Parcs actually do if people refuse to leave?

I've seen on the news that Center Parcs has announced that it will be closing on Monday for the funeral and anyone on a break will need to leave for that evening and find alternative accommodation for the night, affecting people who have got Friday to Friday breaks.

It doesn't affect me personally but I'm curious. What could Center Parcs actually do if people simply refuse to leave? I'm not sure the police would get involved as it could be considered a civil trespass matter potentially?

CentreParcs position is ludicrous.

I can only imagine they aren't willing to pay Bank Holiday rates to staff working on Monday.

Tight fisted and shabby customer service. Absolutely nothing to do with 'showing respect'.

I think their decision is bonkers, but their twitter feed just now is good!

I give you..

“Good luck removing guests from the parks. You've trained them in archery, shooting, swimming, canoeing and swinging through the trees like apes. You've basically got 5 village-loads of ninjas to clear out.”

I think if I was one of the guests who had booked for a week (presumably paying the best part of £1k to do so) I would refuse to move. The private security staff would not be able to drag me out without risking an assault charge. The police will be busy with other things.

I think I'd hunker down in the lodge and just not leave. I'd make sure we took turns to stay in it for 24 hours so there is always someone there to let us back in if we went out for walks etc.

The thing is, I'll bet anything that the discount they are proposing won't be in people's banks before Monday, leaving guests to cover the costs of alternative accommodation themselves. What a mess!

All Friday to Friday guests should get hammered by 10am on the Monday. Then it will be illegal to let them drive out. What could possibly go wrong? Grin

Additionally, lots of places have hiked their rates up because of the BH. So even if it was, people are still out of pocket if they end up having to pay more for comparable accommodation.

CottonSock · 13/09/2022 18:36

I hope they see sense. If I was staying the week I'd be tempted to hide in my lodge.

kenadams86 · 13/09/2022 18:39

This gives me the rage! Who in their right mind would make such a ridiculous decision

I've never been but I've never seen or read anything that would tempt me!

I thought the same until I had kids 😆 suddenly it was so much fun.

But I agree this is ridiculous.

user3199 · 13/09/2022 18:45

We're just back from a week at Center Parcs - I wasn't sure what to expect really but we all (3 generations) had a really great week. I'd definitely go back. But if we'd been told we had to leave the site for 24 hours in the middle of our stay I think we'd have cancelled. Seems completely unreasonable. Agree with PPs though - what could they actually do if people refuse to leave?

noclothesinbed · 13/09/2022 17:49

They would call their on site security team and remove you

Wouldn’t it be assault if they touch you?

user29 · 13/09/2022 18:47

The answer is obvious.
They know 99% of guests can't/won't move out for one night. They will not run any activities that day , saving the unexpectedbank holiday pay uplift. The guests wont be able to complain because the company have closed the park, neither will tehy be able to claim a refund because they havent moved out.

Even if they back track and let people stay but close the facilities I’d still want a partial refund. I go to CP for the pool, etc, not to sit in a cabin with no WiFi and dodgy 3G signal. I can sit in my summer house for free if I wanted to do that and actually have WiFi and Netflix in there!

OilCity · 13/09/2022 18:51

Change their slogan to 'In the dark, at Centre Parc' from the classic 'Up the arse, at Centre parcs'.

I don’t think simply staying would be criminal, but there’s the potential for criminal charges in theft of electricity or use of other consumable. Can’t see them pursuing that, though.

It may just be that they insist on a credit card as a deposit or something and charge and exorbitant fee if you don’t leave. But they may also just be counting on enough people to do as they’re told and for the remainder to have low enough expectations that they can get by with a skeleton staff.

I know not the point of the thread but the WiFi was excellent when I was there. We plugged our laptop into the TV to watch a film
on Netflix. (No phone signal at all though).

But surely they are paying their respects to the queen?

sunnydaytoday0 · 13/09/2022 19:00

I actually wondered if some people will indeed refuse to move, film it and it all blows up on social media. Won't be a good look for the company what with everything in the news about the police threatening to arrest people for holding up a blank piece of paper..

Mrsuntidy · 13/09/2022 19:01

Good old Butlins. This confirms to me that I made the right choice choosing Butlins over Centre Parks

concernedrepurplehouse · 13/09/2022 19:01

Why would it be disrespectful of centre parcs to house people but not the alternative accommodations?

orbitalcrisis · 13/09/2022 19:01

I've noticed a lot of people mentioning a bank holiday pay increase, I think it's so sweet that they think people who work in hospitality get paid more on bank holidays!

I haven’t been since before covid. There was WiFi in the exec lodges (which I’ve stayed in on occasion) but there wasn’t in the standard lodges which I actually preferred because more wildlife. But yeah hopefully they have WiFi all over the place now!

OMG, I am crying with laughter reading this!

Shortpoet · 13/09/2022 19:10

If I’d booked Friday to Friday I would feel comfortable refusing to leave and leaving one person in the lodge while the others went for a walk or cycle.
However it would utterly stress DD out. She’d be terrified we would be arrested and no matter how much I reassured her she’d be convinced we were seconds away from being thrown in jail. It would ruin her holiday.

Id be fine with them just having a skeleton staff and not much open like bars and restaurants (although I’d be annoyed the pool wasn’t as that’s the main draw).

It seems like they really haven’t thought this through.

northernlola · 13/09/2022 19:16

Can't believe people have sat round a table and come up with this. And that no one said, this is utterly ridiculous and very bad for business.

The plan for people staying a week to leave for 24 hours, then come back, is so absurd.
