Washing machines - anyone have a Bosch or Miele?

Looking to get a new washing machine very soon and wanting to splash out on a bit more of an expensive one, anyone have a Miele or Bosch and can recommend?

The only thing putting me off Miele is I can't find any silver/graphite models - the fridge freezer is silver and not sure if a white washer would just look daft or out of place right next to it.

Any wisdom appreciated!

We can see this thread is slightly old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best washing machine page with lots of great options loved by Mumsnet users, including Miele and Bosch models. Our Bosch is six years old and still going strong. It's used every day.

We have a Bosch and like it EXCEPT the touch panel is so sensitive you often only have to walk past with the lightest brush if your clothing and and a setting gets changed - mid cycle.

It drives us mad. Shame because otherwise it's a great machine.

@LadyFromage, this kept happening with my Bosch machine as well, but it's very easily solved. On mine you just have to press the start button for 5 seconds until the key symbol appears. Check your instructions, there should be a child lock function or similar somewhere.

I had a Miele for 18 years that I was very happy with and also really like my current Bosch model. Both very reliable workhorses, would recommend and buy again.

I've got a top of the range Miele (albeit a four-year-old one),and can easily use Twindos or any other detergent. I use the Twindos liquid though happily because it lasts for ever and is brilliant at getting stains out.

I don't like the smell of it and prefer Ariel cold wash. To keep the machine happy I run towels through on it.

I have owned every type of washing machine going. Except a Miele. Bosch machines are fab but I wouldn't buy another one because of the fucking bastard beeping it does at the end of every wash.

Love my Miele, bought earlier this year. Wish I'd bought one years ago.

My parents have had one for donkeys years and it's never let them down!

Not cheap, but personally think it's worth the extra cost. Had an AEG before - PITA

I have a Miele and it's been working without problems for 10 years. I will definitely get another one when it breaks down.
My MIL had a Zanussi for 30 years, it was still working fine when she got rid of it!

Are you sure you can't turn it off? That's the first thing I did with the Miele ,it was well hidden but there was a way to over ride it.

Is this helpful?

I have a 12 year old Miele washing machine. Brilliant machine.

justasking111 · 13/09/2022 08:23

My DIL has just bought a washing machine that takes 14lbs of washing. As a busy mum I think that's awesome. I had an upright one you filled from the top I loved many years ago. I've had two milos a thunderstorm hit the house and fried the motherboard. The second lasted five years so I wasn't impressed

timtam23 · 13/09/2022 08:27

When I bought my first washing machine it was a Bosch...it lasted 20 years before finally going onto its last legs (spin was quite noisy by the end but it washed ok). So I bought another Bosch, that was 5 years ago and am still very happy with it. It has quite a lot of updated tweaks that my first machine didn't have (e.g. additional programmes, a function to stop the drum part way through a wash so that I can put forgotten bits in). We do a lot of sport & DH just generally attracts dirt so it is kept busy

Oh, believe me, I tried. I watched all the tutorials, even rang Bosch. Nope. And it's put me off them for life! It was beyond irritating. And knowing that on other models you could override it and turn it off made it all the more irritating l!

minticecreamisjustok · 13/09/2022 08:31

I have a Miele washing machine, which must be at least 20 years old, belonged to my exh grandparents.

As irritating as my Twindos nonsense!!!

greenacrylicpaint · 13/09/2022 08:45

my parents still have their miele which they got as wedding present 51! years ago.

Dbank · 13/09/2022 08:48

Very happy with a Miele twindos, cleans extremely, quality build. very quiet even on full spin. We love not having to mess around with pods and powders etc.

It's how industrial machines work, i.e. separate detergent and whitening agents.

KittyCatsby · 13/09/2022 08:54

I've had my Siemens machine for about 14 years.

I have AEG that I'd recommend. My mum and I both have 11 year old AEGs her previous machine was AEG and about 17 when it broke.

AEG are not what they used to be. I would hazard a guess that if you bought a new one now it would not last close to 11 years.

They are part of the Electrolux group now (well here they are anyway) which includes Kenwood. The shittiest dishwasher I ever purchased was a Kenwood and so I steer clear of any of their big appliances. Except for the Kenwood mixer (but the new ones are definitely not as robust as the old ones either).

balzamico · 13/09/2022 09:11

My Miele is 15 years old and does at least 10 loads per week.
It's fabulous and we've never had a repair, the thing I love most about it is that you can open the door to chuck in things you missed at most points of the cycle (don't know if that's still the case on newer ones) and that when it's finished the door opens almost immediately rather than making you wait 2 minutes.

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 13/09/2022 10:09

Mine is also a top of the range Miele twindos and also bought just after lockdown because it was all that was available for immediate delivery. I could control it with my phone but no idea why I would want to 🤗. I wonder @MrsPelligrinoPetrichor if you have a faulty machine because I've honestly never had an issue with using normal detergent. I turn the machine on; turn a dial to select the programme; use the up/down arrows to select the temperature (avoiding those with a box around them because they are for twindos ); I sometimes select Short or Water+ too; then I touch the start and away it goes.

BammBamm · 13/09/2022 11:42

I love my Miele twindos but I don't actually use their stuff. It would probably be fine now but had to switch to non bio for DC skin previously so got out of the habit.
It's a workhorse but only 4 years in and no issues so far. It washes incredibly well and stuff comes out nearly dry. I haven't had a Bosch to compare it to though.

How do you over ride the option though,I get told off by mine of I don't use it 😂

BammBamm · 13/09/2022 13:18

I just press the twindos bit on the screen, although it's telling me it needs cleaning at the minute so I have to press the down button to read the message, but just hold it for a few seconds and then carry on as normal.

I just have the option of temperature and then on the main display I can use Twindos or not. In theory you should just be able to over ride it and use your own detergent which I do but then it starts telling me I must run the twindos every so often etc. Drives me bonkers to be biased around by my washing machine 😂
