Washing machines - anyone have a Bosch or Miele?

Looking to get a new washing machine very soon and wanting to splash out on a bit more of an expensive one, anyone have a Miele or Bosch and can recommend?

The only thing putting me off Miele is I can't find any silver/graphite models - the fridge freezer is silver and not sure if a white washer would just look daft or out of place right next to it.

Any wisdom appreciated!

We can see this thread is slightly old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best washing machine page with lots of great options loved by Mumsnet users, including Miele and Bosch models. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

I currently have a Bosch Ecosilence model. It's honestly the quietest washing machine I've ever owned. The noisiest part is the water going in - the spin is very quiet.
This is the second Bosch I've owned (the last one giving up the ghost after being well over ten years old - I got it second hand from someone because it was rattling - there was a coin in the pump. Best £25 I ever spent!) Grin

Last 3 were bosch and I wouldn't go near them with a barge pole now. First one lasted 15 years so went with bosch again. Dead within 3 years. Thought we were unlucky so went with another higher end bosch. Only lasted 3 years. Have Miele for the last 3 years and it's brilliant.

Ignore anyone telling you they've had their bosch for 10 or 15 years. They were the old ones when they were high quality. The quality is poor these days.

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor - What do you hate about the Miele twindos? I'd like to know what issues you have had, as looking at getting one. Can you use it with powder or pods, or ONLY with the auto dosing option?

Had bosch without issues for 6yrs now, but have recently moved. Complete renovation and looking at getting miele appliances.

It wants you to use the Miele Twindos detergent ( which is horrible) it does everything in its power to force you to use it- in theory you can chose but in practice it makes you run a wash using Twindos or it starts flashing messages at you until you do. Then you have to run special cycles to keep it all working and also maintained hot washes. I can't stand the flipping thing I just want to bung my washing in and turn a knob!

Yes this is what put me off this onr, and we can only buy the liquid from Miele direct and it costs a fortune.

As I mentioned upthread I prefer the entry level machine. Has the drawer and just does what it needs to well.

Mine doesn't bleep and sing like someone mentioned. My friend has a Samsung, good grief that thing is annoying.

RainbowToes · 12/09/2022 21:48

I've only bought bottom of the range Bosch Machines. Most last atleast 8 years. The last one survived the first 8 years of DDs life, I was amazed it lasted so long as it was on multiple times every day.
I'd buy Miele if I could afford it though!

burblish · 13/09/2022 01:02

I have a Miele W1 (9kg capacity) and it’s brilliant - I won’t now go with any other manufacturer as long as I can afford it. Mine has the Twindos system but also has the standard dosing drawer, and you can elect not to use the Twindos option if you prefer to use other detergent - it’s very straightforward. I actually wanted a white model, but I subsequently bought a Miele dishwasher (also great!) in silver.

Floralnomad · 13/09/2022 01:22

I have a Bosch washing machine , it’s not a particularly expensive one but is very quiet and has a really good range of programmes .

Dilbertian · 13/09/2022 01:53

We had a Miele washer-dryer for 13y with no problems until it wore out. We replaced it with a John Lewis (own-brand, but made by AEG), which works very well but has just had its second repair in 3y. Our Miele dishwasher is still going strong in its 16th year, having just had its second minor repair in 4y.

So I can totally recommend Miele. But my model knowledge is out-of-date.

Poppyblush · 13/09/2022 06:21

I’ve got a Bosch idos which i strongly recommend you keep clear off. This is the one which automated how much detergent etc you need. Stay away as it’s crap.

greenacrylicpaint · 13/09/2022 06:25

we have a brushed metal miele.

all our appliances are brushed metal ones. and dh didn't want a white one for that reason.

it was quite a bit more expensive than the other models though.

we also looked at a metal-look bosch, but the front was plastic with a metallic look.

LadyFromage · 13/09/2022 06:26

We have a Bosch and like it EXCEPT the touch panel is so sensitive you often only have to walk past with the lightest brush if your clothing and and a setting gets changed - mid cycle.

It drives us mad. Shame because otherwise it's a great machine.

I agree. I hate the iDos system, plus the machine broke down in under a year of having it. It was fixed under warranty (bearings replacement, meaning a whole new drum) but it took weeks for Bosch to send an engineer out. Oh, and then they left a piece of plastic inside the machine which caused more problems and had to come out again.

ApolloandDaphne · 13/09/2022 06:32

I have a mid range Bosch. I love it. It has a great range of programmes including some short ones and I can tweak the temp, spin speed and time on most of the settings to suit what I am washing.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 13/09/2022 06:43

I bought a Bosch after lots of research. It died a week after the two year warranty ended. The whole circuit board was melted. They offered me the option to buy the equivalent current model at half price. That was 9 years ago and I still have that machine. It's been fine but not sure I'd buy another.

GLB1980 · 13/09/2022 06:46

If you can get a Miele go for it!
They really are better, anticipated 20 year life span, cast iron frame not concrete weight which reduces vibration (especially as the machine ages when concrete tends to break, causing vibration) enamel coating just lasts better.
Bosh are good but not Miele good.

What model is it? We have twindos and don’t have to do any of that

Dinoteeth · 13/09/2022 06:55

I have AEG that I'd recommend. My mum and I both have 11 year old AEGs her previous machine was AEG and about 17 when it broke.

EBearhug · 13/09/2022 06:58

My Bosch is about 17yo. It's a bit rattly these days, but it still washes fine.

HouseFullOfChaos · 13/09/2022 07:04

I was one click away from buying a Bosch last month. Then I discovered Ebac and went with one of those. Have had it almost a month and love it. I'd recommend looking into them, they're made in the UK, have a 7 year warranty and when you ring customer service there's only one option before someone from the north east answers the phone, brilliant.

We don't either. I use our own detergent and it doesn't complain. Hot maintenance washes should be run monthly no matter which brand of machine you have, although I don't know if other brands have the reminder (we had a Bosch before which didn't).
We replaced our Miele with another Miele a month ago. The first one died long before it should have (at 7yrs and 7.5k running hours), but the company admitted it should have lasted better and gave us a very substantial discount on a new one with free installation and removal of the old machine. The previous machine was entry level, the new one is upper mid-range and I have been very happy with it so far: much quieter, a good variety of programs with a lot of choice to customise, and the clothes are cleaned well.

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 13/09/2022 07:17

We have a Miele Twindos and don't have any issues using normal detergent. We just select the required programme and chose the temperature by scrolling down a short list (the Twindos temps have a box round them so I ignore those). Then press start and away it goes. It's all very straightforward on my machine.

elizaregina · 13/09/2022 07:19

Another bosh here, work's hard for us ( touch wood!!)

Good spin option, it's a washers dryer, large enough drum, has quick wash and I usually always use 45 min eco wash.
I would be looking at best eco electric ratings.

elizaregina · 13/09/2022 07:20

However I must note we got a bash eco dishwasher after and I hate it.

1dayatatime · 13/09/2022 07:24

I have a Miele that is 22 years old and still running perfect despite years of abuse from a lot of children's laundry.

It's the top of the range twin dos one, it was eye wateringly expensive and hugely over engineered as you can control it for your phone etc. We had to buy it as it was just after lockdown and there was a 6 week delivery time on anything we looked at and we couldn't do without a machine for 6 weeks.
