I use 13Kwh of electricity per day. How much do you use?

After speaking to my fuel provider and getting some info on my account I learnt that:

  • I pay 25p per day for the electricity standing charge
  • I pay 37p per Kwh of electricity
  • I pay 27p per day for the gas standing charge
  • I pay 7.47p per Kwh of gas

These are fixed until 2024.

I also learnt that I use 13kwh of electricity per day. That astonished me! I do two wm loads per week, three in the dishwasher, and use the tumble drier once, max twice a month, for towels (I have lots so can go for weeks without the need to wash them). So what is using up 13kwh per day??? My smart meter doesn't seem to help much.

Do you know how much electricity you use every day? I'd be very interested to compare.

About the same but we do a tumble dry most days, washing machine and dishwasher on every day, computer equipment on all day.

Rosehugger · 12/09/2022 16:07

16 kwh per day electricity between 5 people at the moment - slightly more in darker months.

25 kwh/day gas at the moment v 80 kwh/day in January.

Hugasauras · 12/09/2022 16:08

I imagine it'll be one of the following:

Electric shower
Electric immersion heater for hot water

CandyCaneLane0 · 12/09/2022 16:10

3-5 kwh per day

1 hr of immersion heater could be 3 KWH

Angelicapickles1 · 12/09/2022 16:13

Yeah ww average 8kwh per day over the year. In summer it's more 6kwh that's 2 adults, 4 year old and 1 year old.

Yours is on the higher end of usage we seem to be of average typical use

Angelicapickles1 · 12/09/2022 16:14

Gadgets use a lot like PlayStation etc. Then depending how you cook, how much hot water you use

CampRedLeaf · 12/09/2022 16:14

I use on average 15 KWH of electricity a day. Based on a similar post, most people seem to use around 10-15kwh a day.

Is your oven/hob gas or electric? What about hot water? Shower?

I only have electricity. So my figure includes the oven being on a minimum of once a day and the hot water for a minimum of 2 showers a day.

We are a family of four (me, DH and 2 DCs aged 9 and 12) and we use 7.9 kWh/day. I think this is slap bang on the average, as it's the equivalent of about 2900 kWh/year. We're in a 3 bedroom semi, DH and I both work from home, and we have the usual number of gadgets and appliances (but no tumble dryer).

NewBootsAndRanty · 12/09/2022 16:21

2 or under.

mackerella · 12/09/2022 16:21

I should have said: we have gas central heating and a gas hob (but an electric oven)!

I have a boiler with a hot water tank! So is that a culprit?

American style fridge freezer? I've read they are greedy.

midgetastic · 12/09/2022 16:32

Depends if it's gas or electric !

And how long you have the hot water on for

BMW6 · 12/09/2022 16:32

I've just worked out we used 5kWh per day last year. 2 of us.

2 or under.

Really?

Hugasauras · 12/09/2022 16:34

Check you don't have the red switch on beside the tank. Cylinders often have a backup electric immersion heater in case the gas boiler fails.

JOFFCV · 12/09/2022 16:33

Really?

Yep.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 12/09/2022 16:37

We're using about 11 a day on average. Have tumble, dishwasher and washer on a lot plus computers and electric shower. Cooker also electric

Ours is above average and we have an American fridge freezer, a pump for outside fish & a gaming computer used a lot.

rbe78 · 12/09/2022 16:37

Huh - we don't have a smart meter, but going through old bills we use around 20kWh. day. I would have put as relatively low electricty users. Big house, but only two of us here full time.

We have a combi boiler, so mostly gas for hot water. Gas hob, use the electric oven a few times a week for an hour or so. Internet on all the time, and probably one laptop on charge all day on average. No TV on standby - we use a projector for an hour or two a day. Smallish fridge-freezer (not an American style one). Don't leave lights on in unoccupied rooms. Not gamers, so no console plugged in. A string of LED fairy lights on about 14 hours a day up the stairs. Dehumidifer on in the basement most of the time. Usual charging of phones. One or two washing laods a week, on eco setting. Tumble dryer for an hour or two a fortnight, max.

What could be using so much energy? The dehumidifier?

MooBaggage · 12/09/2022 16:38

Not sure... we got a smart meter a few weeks ago so it's my new obsession...! We're using around 35 - 38 kwh on electricity a week at the moment, so that's around 5 - 6 kwh a day? We're a family of 4 in a 4 bed house. 2 x teenagers who are on devices a lot, but I'm being really strict about everything being switched off that can be switched off - anything with an LED light (microwave, chargers etc.) all switched off at the plug when not in use. Wifi stays on (obvs!) and fridge/freezer. Everything else is turned off. So far on gas and electricity it's telling us we're spending under £3 a day, which is my budget - but that's without the gas heating on yet, so am not looking forward to colder weather...

Your electricity seems high - can you get a smart meter fitted and then you can see what's costing you money by switching stuff off and checking it.
