I use 13Kwh of electricity per day. How much do you use?

After speaking to my fuel provider and getting some info on my account I learnt that:

  • I pay 25p per day for the electricity standing charge
  • I pay 37p per Kwh of electricity
  • I pay 27p per day for the gas standing charge
  • I pay 7.47p per Kwh of gas

These are fixed until 2024.

I also learnt that I use 13kwh of electricity per day. That astonished me! I do two wm loads per week, three in the dishwasher, and use the tumble drier once, max twice a month, for towels (I have lots so can go for weeks without the need to wash them). So what is using up 13kwh per day??? My smart meter doesn't seem to help much.

Do you know how much electricity you use every day? I'd be very interested to compare.

For me I'm poor and have been for my entire life.
Basically we get £1000 a month to pay for everything, £450 of that is rent.
So our usage and everything in life is dictated by our budget.

There's my daughter's the cat and I.

I know exactly what is using electricity at any point in any given day.

Eg right now:
The fridge is on, we don't have a freezer.
the TV isn't on, turned off at wall.
lights aren't on, curtains opened instead.
im using my phone, not plugged in, battery.
daughter is on her tablet, battery, not plugged in.
we've a bedside clock each.
thats it ATM.

Lamps will go on once dark.
TV will go on about 7 till 11ish
We're not Cooking tonight, save using the electric, we're having a cold tea, wraps with salad and chicken.

We don't have a washer or a dishwasher.
Launderette is £5 every fortnight for 1 x 20kg load.
Wood floors don't need a hoover very often, sweep and dustpan and brush every day. Hoover once a week.

Living this way is not for everyone, frankly, I wouldn't recommend it. But people complain about 'scroungers' etc so the government won't allow a decent standard of living for claimants... I less you're one of the claimants in the anecdotes shared by biased.people.that always seem to know of someone raking in 30k on benefits.. 🤪

Thank you for sharing.

I'm now worried that my question came across all wrong because of the last bit of your post.

I was asking because we pay more than average and it stresses me out so looking how to cut back.

Wheretheskyisblue · 12/09/2022 17:29

We use about 14kwh per day, family of 4 plus 2 guests for most of the last month. Seems to be mainly washing and tmble drying and cooking that uses most of it. Two big peaks here are result of washing machine and dryer and smaller one at 5pm for cooking.

I live alone, gas HW/heating

no tumble drier or dishwasher, no dehumidifier.

3-5kwh per day. This past few months. Last years total usage /365 averages out at 6kwh. But that includes, WFH & no holidays.

We used 6.375 over August. So not typical. Household of 4 and 2 of us were away for 2 weeks. I'll be interested to see how this month compares.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/09/2022 17:32

13/14 average in summer - more for hot tub months

I see to be in the high end

not sure how some get 4/5 a day

Hesma · 12/09/2022 17:35

Approx 3.5 per day last month

Just checked Jan to end of Aug and 8.28 per day. Was using tumble dryer then as well until warm spring/summer weather.

Clovacloud · 12/09/2022 17:43

On days I do washing/drying it’s up to 11kw, normal days about 6kw. That’s 3 adults, in a 3 bed semi all day working from home.

OldTinHat · 12/09/2022 17:46

3kw a day, live alone, no tumble, 3bed house. 30p a day odd standing charge with Eon Next.

FixTheBone · 12/09/2022 18:02

I use around 45kWh per day.

Roughly 20kWh on the electric car

Add in 7 kids, 3 xboxes, 2 gaming PCs - 2 oven loads of food every night and 3 washing cycles and 2-3 tumble cycles per day. 2 Fridges, 2 Freezers, etc etc

Whole house is LED lighting, tumble dryer and washer are as efficient as I can find.

Agree, your's seems high for what you use. It'll probably be a single appliance constantly on with a higher than typical background use.

I'd go around literally turn everything off and watch the smart meter, if it drops down, turn things on one-by one.

If you don't find the item that way, you can isolate it to an area by tripping circuits on the fuse box until you find the one that has the rogue device on it.

Willowwarble · 12/09/2022 18:03

I submitted my metre reading today, it worked out at an average of 2.5 KW a day but I am super frugal and have managed to reduce it from 5.5 KW I was using April - June. It will be a lot more in winter as no gas and no central heating.

summergone · 12/09/2022 18:10

Ours was 13 a day and is now 6 . Differences are my son has left home and he had daily 40 minute showers and constantly left lights on . We also stopped using the tumble dryer and dishwasher when he left too , still surprised it's halved thou .

Ragged · 12/09/2022 18:11

7 kwH/day? Mostly the kettle, cooker, microwave & TV.

Lochjeda · 12/09/2022 18:16

The most we have used in the last month is 5.44 but on average it tends to be just under 4 per day. Five of us in a 4 bed.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 12/09/2022 18:20

I definitely want to find out what's eating ours! 2 adults, 1 child, standard 3bed semi, but we seem to use 15 kWh/day on average. I don't want to switch it all off but I think I might need to get a smart plug to find out ...

MarieJ1987 · 12/09/2022 18:23

Do you someone who uses a Xbox or PlayStation? I found my usage went up more when the PlayStation was on, as it's not on for a hr it's all for a while Confused

Just curious about electric car charging, do you have to charge daily or is it weekly?

Oopsilot · 12/09/2022 18:29

@rbe78 our electricity bill shot up the year we got a dehumidifier, it was only on a couple of hours a day too.

Pootle40 · 12/09/2022 18:32

We are averaging 8-9 kw - that is 2 laptops wfh every day, 1hr dishwasher, 30 minutes washing machine, 30 mins oven / induction hob, 4 hours tv, with some PlayStation as well. Usual phone charging.

megletthesecond · 12/09/2022 18:34

I don't know. I'm going to start taking a reading every evening from now on.

Maria1982 · 12/09/2022 18:39

Yes, dehumidifier is a big consumer (we had to use one in garage for a month - I noticed our electricity consumption shot up). Other thing that jumped out at me from your post was ‘oven on a few times a week for an hour or so’. Don’t know about yours, but our (small modern efficient ) oven makes a big impact on electric consumption

Maria1982 · 12/09/2022 18:40

Argh! My Previous post was aimed at @rbe78 sorry

PinkDaffodil2 · 12/09/2022 18:41

3.5 average here - 1.2 if we’re away which is mostly the the freezer.
2 of us plus 3yo dd, I’m home with her 2 days a week and DH works from home about 4 days / week. We do have gas heating and oven, but use the washing machine / dishwasher a lot and tumble dryer until recently.

Whiskers4 · 12/09/2022 18:54

Ours used to be 6-7kw a day. Have been really careful over last few months and got it down to 4kw daily. I'm trying to reduce cooking times (electric oven), less clothes washing, TV and lighting g only on if actively using, not overfilled kettle, leas hovering- turns out I like doing less housework and no one notices the difference! We've never used a dishwasher, tumble dryer, hairdryer.

coffeetofunction · 12/09/2022 18:58

@MoMooBaggage how are you only doing 3-4 washes a week? I can do that in one day and still have a basket full of washing
