I use 13Kwh of electricity per day. How much do you use?

After speaking to my fuel provider and getting some info on my account I learnt that:

  • I pay 25p per day for the electricity standing charge
  • I pay 37p per Kwh of electricity
  • I pay 27p per day for the gas standing charge
  • I pay 7.47p per Kwh of gas

These are fixed until 2024.

I also learnt that I use 13kwh of electricity per day. That astonished me! I do two wm loads per week, three in the dishwasher, and use the tumble drier once, max twice a month, for towels (I have lots so can go for weeks without the need to wash them). So what is using up 13kwh per day??? My smart meter doesn't seem to help much.

Do you know how much electricity you use every day? I'd be very interested to compare.

Also use 13 a day, but I admit to being lazy.
tumble drier is used a lot, things on stand by, lots of Alexa devices and smart bulbs that are on routines, dishwasher probably every other day etc. DH is wfh with extensive computer set up.
I can add an electric car to that after Christmas as well.

I am going to try and reduce. Living room for example had six different lights on which probably aren’t needed but look nice. Our boiler is pretty new and one of the most efficient around apparently. We’re not on a smart meter but I imagine they will want to install one soon.

I forgot the power showers, it's quite alarming when you realise how much electricity is being used.

sanityisamyth · 13/09/2022 00:40

These are mine for last month. No idea why the highest is so high. I live in a rented flat but with immersion heater, electric heaters (which I'm flatly refusing to ever switch on again) and need to run the tumble dryer to dry clothes as the flat is damp - black mould on walls which is not great.

I use 13Kwh of electricity per day. How much do you use?

I definitely want to find out what's eating ours! 2 adults, 1 child, standard 3bed semi, but we seem to use 15 kWh/day on average. I don't want to switch it all off but I think I might need to get a smart plug to find out ...

You sound like me @JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue

don’t have a tumble dryer

dw on daily - must check to see what that uses

3 freezer

fish tank

wash 3 times a week usually

then the usual things like WiFi sky kettle microwave air fryer

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/09/2022 10:41

Oh and have Eddie the eufy. He get fed maybe every other day 😂

JOFFCV · 13/09/2022 11:09

Has anyone switched everything off apart from American fridge freezer and worked out how much that uses? I'm going to do that later. When we were away for the weekend we were using more than some of you when you are at home.

JOFFCV · 13/09/2022 14:05

Just swept instead of hoovering. Did a good job too.

We have an old fridge freezer (bought it for £50 of previous owner 7 years ago when we bought the house), where the water pools in the bottom of the fridge in increasingly large quantities. I'd love to work out how much energy it is using. It will need replacing at somepoint, so I could do with finding out if it is worth doing before January when our fix tarriff ends.

Ditto the oven, a simple non fan oven, that is so old it has burnt through the bottom, but is still hanging in there! We were waiting for when we replace the kitchen but that has been knocked back due to living in a rural location making the difficulties that everyone is having finding trademan even worse.

megletthesecond · 14/09/2022 07:14

I used 20kwh yesterday. Three of us. Fairly modern white goods. I think it might be the kids showers that does the damage.
I'm going to be obsessively logging it going forward.

SereneSemolina · 17/11/2022 09:51

Just resurrecting this thread as trying to get a handle on predicted usage for the next little while.

This week has been grey and dingy so more lights on than normal, cooked a proper meal in the oven last night and I think that will have eaten up kWh.

Am wondering what a realistic number of kWh is for budgeting this winter. Going to try and dog out figures from last year.

We have an oil boiler - much harder to keep tabs on usage so am focussing efforts on electricity.

Wheretheskyisblue · 17/11/2022 10:44

We use an average of 20kwh per day. Biggest use is for cooking, we use the oven a lot and drying maybe 5x a week. 4 people in 5 bed house.

When we were away for the weekend we were still using 5kwh per day, the house seems to use 0.2kwh when nothing additional is on.

Natsku · 17/11/2022 11:14

We're averaging 13kwh a day now, with bedroom electric radiators on all night and the lounge radiator on all the time now (also heating the hallway and kitchen radiators which are on the boiler system with oil or wood for most of the day, which means the electric radiators don't have to work so much). Some days are quite a bit more though but not been keeping track of what I've been doing differently those days, must be cooking though.

xogossipgirlxo · 17/11/2022 12:01

On average in November we used 6.2kWh per day. 2 people household, both working in the office. Gas heating, no electric car. Just normal usage- oven once or twice a week, 2-3 loads of laundry, dehumidifier 4-5 hours on every day.

SereneSemolina · 17/11/2022 14:00

I think we could be nearer the 15-20 too. The oven is the most massive difference but I struggle to think of meals that avoid it entirely.

6.2/day is amazing but I guess Woh makes a big difference, my laptop is on all day plus lights often now it's dingy.

megletthesecond · 17/11/2022 18:30

No more than 10kwh a day. Me and two teens.
Usually 2 washing machine loads a day. Never use the tumble dryer. Line dry and check weather ahead to plan best laundry days.
Dishwasher on every day. Try to batch cook so pasta sauces, veggie lasagnes can be heated in microwave.
Various gadgets plugged in.
The electric shower devours electric so I've had to crack down on the dcs long showers.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/11/2022 23:03

Oct to nov

e 11 a day

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/11/2022 23:03

CookieDoughKid · 17/11/2022 23:34

4 bed, 2 reception room Victorian villa (very large semi detached) x6 adult household. X3 wfh full time. Each person has 2 or 3 devices on permanently. American style fridge freezer. SAMSUNG Eco bubble washing machine on x5 days a week. Tumble dryer, 1 hour a week. Quookr tap. Electric Oven. A gazillion smart lights, x3 chandeliers. Garden driveway lighting. Dehumidifier on permanently . X 4 electric blankets, hoover on x2 a week. Electric underfloor heating in one bathroom. 2600 sqft house. Daily we use 35 to 40kwh for electricity.

Would be goos to know other folks consumption of similar size house and occupancy .

LabradorEyes · 17/11/2022 23:42

2 bed flat- only me here. I use 8kw per day. It's all electric, no gas

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/11/2022 06:56

35/40 @CookieDoughKid

blondes faints

dare I ask how much your monthly dd is

CookieDoughKid · 18/11/2022 07:57

At the moment it’s £250 a month with Ovo Energy but my actual bill last month was £160. My electricity consumption is x3 that of my gas. I’m on a low fixed rate till Summer but after that, I’m fully aware of the price increases going up. I plan to create a big energy savings buffer. I would like to look into solar energy and see if that is doable.

WhatTeaspoon · 18/11/2022 08:23

@coffeetofunction people have really varying ideas on how often things can be worn. I grew up having to wash by hand until my family got a twin tub when I was about 12, spot cleaning was the way and I still do this. I use a towel for two weeks, as far as I’m concerned it is thoroughly dried out and I’m clean when I dry myself off. My sheets are changed every two weeks. I have read on here how some people give their children a clean set of uniform every day. Three adults here and I would say 4 loads of washing per week, it is a big drum washing machine.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/11/2022 17:14

Ah. I can only dream of a low rate @CookieDoughKid

from October im 10p from 7. And 35p from 29

CookieDoughKid · 18/11/2022 17:26

@Blondeshavemorefun That will be me soon! However once my Ukrainian refugees have left it will just be 4 of us so hoping that will help a bit!

FluffyPancake · 18/11/2022 18:08

Just checked my app and last week we averaged 5KWH per day but we have solar panels. In July/August, it was around 11KWH a week 😮
