I use 13Kwh of electricity per day. How much do you use?

After speaking to my fuel provider and getting some info on my account I learnt that:

  • I pay 25p per day for the electricity standing charge
  • I pay 37p per Kwh of electricity
  • I pay 27p per day for the gas standing charge
  • I pay 7.47p per Kwh of gas

These are fixed until 2024.

I also learnt that I use 13kwh of electricity per day. That astonished me! I do two wm loads per week, three in the dishwasher, and use the tumble drier once, max twice a month, for towels (I have lots so can go for weeks without the need to wash them). So what is using up 13kwh per day??? My smart meter doesn't seem to help much.

Do you know how much electricity you use every day? I'd be very interested to compare.

We average 3 kwh a day (1100 a year). Two of us, two washes a week, no dishwasher or tumble dryer. One fridge freezer, not much oven use (mostly use gas stovetop). Shower from the hot water tank (solar/gas).

Oh bugger, yep, it's the duhumidifer. Just gone to check the wattage, and it's using about 5kWh a day!!! That's about £500/year....!!!

Which dehumidifier are you using? We have the meaco, and a quick Google and some calculations suggest about 1.8 kWh for 12 hours use (which is what we use ours through the autumn and winter).

People on really low usage, do you live on your own and not own a dog that sheds a lot? I'm forever hoovering.

Two of us and two cats, 3 kwh. They shed but we only hoover once a week. There's cat hair the day after, but I'm hardly going to hoover every day.

bigbluebus · 12/09/2022 19:11

We average just under 11kwh per day.
We run 2 fridges and 2 freezers, a dishwasher and washing machine, an electric shower is used daily by DS (we use a power shower which feeds straight off the hot water tank heated by oil). DS also puts lights on wherever he goes - although thankfully most bulbs are LED low energy now.

AlwaysLatte · 12/09/2022 19:11

I'm not sure how many kWh we use but we're with British Gas and it averages at about £9 a day. We use oil for our heating and hot water. Electric car, very large fridge freezer, two boys with computers and lights, etc. We don't work so obviously the dishwasher and electric cooker, laptops etc are on every day. Unfortunately although we want to move to Octopus we can't as we got stuck with BG when the last provider went bust but they made an error on our bill and charged us double. So we're still arguing that out with them and can't move yet lest they don't refund us.

MooBaggage · 12/09/2022 19:14

We're just horribly dirty 😀. Most things get worn multiple times before washing!

Ds's are off to Uni from next week so I'm hoping dp and I can reduce to 1 x wash on a week - ds's create a lot more washing than us!

Minimochi · 12/09/2022 19:15

Ours is about 13 kwh per day on average, too. I assume it's less during the summer months. In winter, it gets bloody cold here (-20 C) and our house is quite old, big and still partly a building site.
We do have a tumble dryer but don't use it often. The washing machine is running a few times over the weekend and we use the dishwasher most days. Two adults and one primary age child.
We also have a heat exchange pump (or whatever it's called) for the hot water.

MooBaggage · 12/09/2022 19:15

Oops! That was in reply to @coffeetofunction !!

AlwaysLatte · 12/09/2022 19:15

Just curious about electric car charging, do you have to charge daily or is it weekly?
We top ours up every night and it's usually around two thirds full but once or twice a week it gets down to low. Long journeys we use our diesel car so it's only for school runs, local running around really.

HairyKitty · 12/09/2022 19:22

4 people home all day, gas ch and hob. No tumble drier. Has been 9.5kwh/day, really trying to get it down and notice that 3 hours of computer Xbox tv and tv box uses about 3kwh per day!!

livingonpurpose · 12/09/2022 19:31

Based on my meter readings for the past 10 months, we average 5kwh per day. That's for one adult and one child in an old 2-bed house. I am expecting that average to come down as I'm being militant about switching things off when not in use, and will be using the slow cooker and air fryer rather than the oven going forward. We have no dishwasher, rarely use the tumble dryer, but I do work from home so have PC on 5 days a week.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 12/09/2022 19:35

I use about 20kwh a day, but I don't have gas

Stripedbag101 · 12/09/2022 19:43

I use 4 a day. No tumble drier or electric showers. But things charging all the time! Two eufy robo vacuums that go every day.

We have dark wood floor. I hoover then there are dog hairs straight away. I have bought a brush but it really needs a hoover every day. Expensive but lovely dog breed.

JOFFCV · 12/09/2022 22:19

Growing up though I did think everyone hovered every day.

Stripedbag101 · 12/09/2022 22:22

I live alone with a cat (stereotype I know!).

I have robo vacs that run every day upstairs and down.

usage is low - 4 kWh a day on average.

We have beige carpet, you can't see the fur!

I spent the last couple of months cutting back as much as possible - the idea of a July bill of £130 next year (prediction from my supplier before all the price hikes got cancelled) had me absolutely panicking. I'm on PIP and ESA, but always conscious that that could change.

WhatsitWiggle · 12/09/2022 22:32

6-9kwh per day, higher usage when I'm using the heated airer /iron. I will be changing several lightbulbs next week now I've figured out which ones are not LED as with the nights drawing in, they are on more and I can see my usage increasing.

Introvertedandalone · 12/09/2022 22:36

1.1 per day on average
led lights, phone, laptop, tv, fridge/freezer
no laundry as use laundrette
gas hob and oven
no toaster/kettle (use gas cooker for both)
no microwave (don’t feel the need)
no dishwasher
when I write this it seems like I live in the dark ages but I actually don’t miss these things, I used to have things like a dishwasher, laundry, toaster etc. and would have said I couldn’t live without…turns out you can.

aramox1 · 12/09/2022 22:47

7-8 kwh per day. Laptops, ps4, 3 over-bath showers, washing machine 4 x week and dishwasher daily. Dishwasher is the biggie for us

garlicandsapphires · 12/09/2022 22:47

Just had a smart meter fitted and it’s coming up just under 4kw. Which seems high considering I live along and am very careful with my electricity usage - or so I thought.

People on really low usage, do you live on your own and not own a dog that sheds a lot? I'm forever hoovering.

Get one of those rubber brooms and 'sweep' the carpet at least every other day. Is much quicker than getting the hoover out, unravelling the cord, plugging it in then the reverse to put it away. I sweep the affected area where the dog mostly lies, then pick up the pile of hair generated and bin it. Cuts the amount of hoovering.

BocolateChiscuits · 12/09/2022 23:08

Average so far this year 13kWh a day. It's 10kWh a day in the Summer.

High, but we use electric for heating and cooking and have an EV.
