I use 13Kwh of electricity per day. How much do you use?

After speaking to my fuel provider and getting some info on my account I learnt that:

  • I pay 25p per day for the electricity standing charge
  • I pay 37p per Kwh of electricity
  • I pay 27p per day for the gas standing charge
  • I pay 7.47p per Kwh of gas

These are fixed until 2024.

I also learnt that I use 13kwh of electricity per day. That astonished me! I do two wm loads per week, three in the dishwasher, and use the tumble drier once, max twice a month, for towels (I have lots so can go for weeks without the need to wash them). So what is using up 13kwh per day??? My smart meter doesn't seem to help much.

Do you know how much electricity you use every day? I'd be very interested to compare.

Yep.

That's interesting and impressive.

What do you use daily that is run by electric?

MooBaggage · 12/09/2022 16:38

Meant to say we do about 3 x washes a week and don't use a tumble drier.

Yep.

My fridge freezers been on the blink and using about twice as much ele as it should have - it got replaced yesterday..
I'm a pretty low user tbf; my heating/oven/hob/water are gas.

Huh - we don't have a smart meter, but going through old bills we use around 20kWh. day. I would have put as relatively low electricty users. Big house, but only two of us here full time.

We have a combi boiler, so mostly gas for hot water. Gas hob, use the electric oven a few times a week for an hour or so. Internet on all the time, and probably one laptop on charge all day on average. No TV on standby - we use a projector for an hour or two a day. Smallish fridge-freezer (not an American style one). Don't leave lights on in unoccupied rooms. Not gamers, so no console plugged in. A string of LED fairy lights on about 14 hours a day up the stairs. Dehumidifer on in the basement most of the time. Usual charging of phones. One or two washing laods a week, on eco setting. Tumble dryer for an hour or two a fortnight, max.

What could be using so much energy? The dehumidifier?

Oh bugger, yep, it's the duhumidifer. Just gone to check the wattage, and it's using about 5kWh a day!!! That's about £500/year....!!!

Babysharkdoodoodood · 12/09/2022 16:46

Over last 4 days we used 34 kWh electric/ 2.1 gas

3 lots of washing, dried indoors, oven on a few times and hob daily, 2 tvs for few hours a day, kettles, Alexa x2 and echo x 1, charging devices, , fridge freezer and 1 small freezer. Gas boiler for hot water, but I've been showering at the gym and stinky son only showers 2times a week, plus washing up by hand.

We capped last year until next November though, but we're getting ourselves into the habit of being frugal and have stocked up on logs and coal nuts for the winter. Rads are always off upstairs as well as the heat from fire warms the bedrooms up.

People on really low usage, do you live on your own and not own a dog that sheds a lot? I'm forever hoovering.

Blimey!

Sooveritallnow · 12/09/2022 16:52

I've used 9.6KWH per day average (10,6 in last 11 days. I'm all electric though as don't have gas in my apartment.

lashy · 12/09/2022 16:52

An average of 3.88kwh per day

barkymcbarkface · 12/09/2022 16:54

No more than 4Kwh a day.

Ohheythereitsme · 12/09/2022 16:55

Anything from 20 to 70 kWh used a day here for electricity. We charge cars over night using a cheap tariff though for EV’s

LeroyJenkinssss · 12/09/2022 16:56

Admittedly for both us and my parents annexe (but they are away at the moment) but this is last weeks usage. Our baseline when no one is home is just under 7kwh. So two lots of fridges, a chest freezer, sewage treatment unit and gubbins for the chickens.

I use 13Kwh of electricity per day. How much do you use?

No dog here. I do have a cat, but I'm a sloven Grin

I don't really use my tv, no gadgets other than my phone..
Useage is basically lights/radio/kettle/toaster/fridge freezer/microwave/phone charging, and usually one load of washing a week. And infrequent hoovering.

welshweasel · 12/09/2022 16:57

Around 5-6 per day, except on days when I charge my car, then it’s around 30!

We are all electric other than heating and hot water.

For me I'm poor and have been for my entire life.
Basically we get £1000 a month to pay for everything, £450 of that is rent.
So our usage and everything in life is dictated by our budget.

There's my daughter's the cat and I.

I know exactly what is using electricity at any point in any given day.

Eg right now:
The fridge is on, we don't have a freezer.
the TV isn't on, turned off at wall.
lights aren't on, curtains opened instead.
im using my phone, not plugged in, battery.
daughter is on her tablet, battery, not plugged in.
we've a bedside clock each.
thats it ATM.

Lamps will go on once dark.
TV will go on about 7 till 11ish
We're not Cooking tonight, save using the electric, we're having a cold tea, wraps with salad and chicken.

We don't have a washer or a dishwasher.
Launderette is £5 every fortnight for 1 x 20kg load.
Wood floors don't need a hoover very often, sweep and dustpan and brush every day. Hoover once a week.

Living this way is not for everyone, frankly, I wouldn't recommend it. But people complain about 'scroungers' etc so the government won't allow a decent standard of living for claimants... I less you're one of the claimants in the anecdotes shared by biased.people.that always seem to know of someone raking in 30k on benefits.. 🤪

Just me and my 15 year old son. I'm at home all day. He's a typical teenager so spends a lot of time on his PlayStation. We have a cat. Maybe 3 loads of washing a week. No tumble dryer. Dishwasher probably 5 days a week.

DogandMog · 12/09/2022 16:58

We use an average of 2.4 kwh per day (1.2 - 1.8 ish in summer, 3 - 4 in winter), but we have solar panels, and I try to optimise when I use appliances and cook in the afternoon when brightest/use instant pot slow cooker. We have trickle in PV powering the immersion heater when there's spare generating capacity, so even on fairly overcast days we get free hot water. We also live fairly modestly/eco, so just really laptop, lighting, second freezer really. Have hard floors apart from medium rug, so don't have to hoover up all the pet hair that my username would suggest 😸

Natsku · 12/09/2022 17:00

We were using 12 or so kWh a day until we switched off the electric boiler and now its down to around 8 kWh a day so judging by that, electric boiler uses a fair bit.

FourTeaFallOut · 12/09/2022 17:03

About 19kwh/ day (although it's offset by our own solar generation). Which includes a house of 5 and an ev car. Heating is gas and averages 33.3kwh/day across the year.

Dannexe · 12/09/2022 17:07

About 20kwh. On a low usage day we use about 16kwh. I don’t really get it but that’s what the meter says

Meatshake · 12/09/2022 17:08

6-7kwh if we are out for the day and just home for the evening. 12-13kwh is about average (husband works from home, I'm SAHM to a preschool child so lots of electronics on). It'll go up to 20kwh if I'm having a laundry marathon huge clean up kinda day, or if the kids want the bouncy castle up.

ChickinMarango · 12/09/2022 17:17

8.5kwh a day. No electric shower and gas central heating (not that it’s on). We are a family of 4, 2 adults, a 4 year old and a baby under 1 with reusable nappies.

We were probably using lots more but have switched over to eco modes on washing machine, dishwasher and have stopped using the tumble dryer. I do a fair bit of cooking and microwave sterilise and pop the kettle on a thousand times a day for bottles and caffeine shots 😜

HideTheCroissants · 12/09/2022 17:18

Ours averages between 8 and 10kWh per day. DH works from home and DS is currently at home on his PC most of the day. We don’t have a tumble dryer or electric heated showers (electric pumped).

Meatshake · 12/09/2022 17:20

Currently our solar set up is charging 5kwh to the battery, we use 7-20kwh and we export around 10kwh a day on average though. Our energy consumption would look different if this were not the case.
